Hello Ladies
I have a 1 year old son who loves his sippy cup with handles but I have been letting him use my cup with my help to drink out of and he is doing really well with out handles and he really likes it plus everytime I have something in my cup he seems to want it more than his sippy so I let him drink from my cup is that a mistake??. I was just wondering if I could go to a big boy sippy with out handles if he is doing really well with my cup and I was also wondering how and what age would I be able to ween him off of sippies and start getting him to use bigger cups like mine??
Also I was wondering what type or brand of big boy sippies that anyone would recommend that they have used in the past plus ones that perferabley dont leak I was not sure, I would really appreciate some answers or advice on this please & thank you it would be greatly appreciated
Happy Holidays :)

If he can drink out of a cup he should be fine with sippies without handles. We like the Gerber brand sippies, and a friend of mine loves the Playtex. You could try letting him use plain plastic cups too, just put a tiny bit of water in them because kids that age tend to spill pretty easily...

Hi S. - The only drawback I can think of to him using a regular cup like yours is cleaning up lots of messes and liquids! My oldest is 3.5 years and she is not even ready for a cup without a lid, unless she is VERY careful or has a straw. My 18 month old goes back and forth from a sippy without handles to a sippy with handles and she loves them both. It's fine to have your son use a bunch of different cups as needed. I agree with the previous post - we all use different cups for different purposes. Just be careful about him drinking from your cup a lot, though, besides sharing germs, he will get the idea that what is mom's is also his, and before you know it you might have a little food/drink stealer on your hands! Good luck!

Do whatever you are most comfortable with. My son is 18 months and we have never used sippy cups with handles because we just never bought that kind. So sure, give it a go. Also, you can switch to a regular cup whenever you want if you are prepared to clean up messes and spills. It really isn't so much a milestone to go from a sippy cup to a cup, sippy cups are really used for kids to keep them from spilling everywhere. Many babies can sip out of cups, but the messes they make can make for a lot of spills and wasting. Many kids in their toddler years will go back and forth from sippy cups to regular cups. Regular at the table and sippy cups on the go and in the car. Even adults use some sort of sippy cups from sports drinks to on the go coffee containers. So just do what is comfortable for you and your son.

It's great that he drinks from a regular cup. Keep in mind that kids his age are easily distracted and spill happen a lot. My son always carried the sippy cup around him and took sips whenever he wanted a sip. I found goods ones at Target that were insulated too(forget brand) My daughter uses a cheap one from target that was only a dollar. She does fine with it it's narrow enough that she can hold. My daughter has been using it for a few weeks and she's 11 months.

Hi, S., My advice is that your kiddo will wean himself off of sippies when he's ready. My little one weaned himself from the breast at 7 1/2 months and decided he wanted a cup not too much later. He's 10 months now and drinks from a sippy cup by himself. He also loves to drink from my cup, though he can't hold it yet. We use Gerber sippy cups with the handles and they don't leak at all. Nubys leak--don't buy those. Hope this helps!

Hi,
I never used a sippy cup with handles for my two kids. So, if your son seems ready pick up a few and see how he does. I don't think it really matters all that much if he uses the handles or not. They are to help if they need it and it seema as if your son is ready.

ood luck

Hi S.,

It sounds like he is telling you he's ready for a real cup.
We got a couple of unbreakable kids cups from Target, though our daughter (same age as your son) wants to drink from whatever kind of cup we're drinking, so I generally give myself a plastic cup, too, and let her drink my water alternating with her milk.

You can talk to your own pediatrician, but ours said that our daughter should be transitioning to cups, and not to be worried that she will be drinking a lot less milk than she did when she was primarily using a bottle.

I think she said to expect 8-16 oz a day?

We have some sippy cups, but she's not really into them. She's either drinking from a bottle (or breast) or a regular cup. We're going to gradually offer the bottle less and less.

Good luck, it sounds like you're a wonderful mother!

Whenever your kid is ready, go for it...also when ever you are ready for the messes, if there are any. My daughter can also drink out of a cup, but when I am not looking she dumps it, so I choose the lid.

hi there,
i have tried all the brands and have found that Platex without handles dont leak. If he prefers to use a sippy without handles go for it. that is GREAT. Even if he wants to use a regular cup without a sippy top that is GREAT too. There is no specific age with the regular cup but around 3-4 is a good age to get him in a regular cup, unless he prefers to use regular cup sooner. It does make it easier when traveling

Well the sippy cups are pretty much the same as far as his ability to drink from them. Usually the cups with the handles hold less than some of the ones without handles but that is just a matter of preference. I would try a few different types and see what he likes. The number 5 plastic is the safest and doesn't contain bpa. My son just turned three and has been using sippy cups since just before he turned 1. Right now he will only drink from the regular playtex insulated cups. I also have avent (which sometimes leak!) and the first years. I like the first years cups becuase the valve is built into the cup so less pieces to clean. I constantly replace his cups though, mainly because he likes to chew the spout!
Like others posters mentioned it's great to let him drink out of a regular cup with your supervision of course but they do tend to dump them. We also have the tupperware kids cups with covers my son will drink from them without the covers it's great for them to practice.
If he's already drinking from sippy cups that is great! Some people wait to long I personally think that by age 1 they shouldn't have a bottle at all.
Happy Holidays!

I've always liked the Take & Toss ones. They're inexpensive, dishwasher-safe... and it's no big deal if you lose one! It's nice that the lids are interchangeable with the different size cups, and the sippy lids are interchangeable with the straw lids. I like the Take & Toss bowls for snacks-on-the-go too.

I agree with the previous poster who said that you should teach your son to differentiate between your drinks & his.... I know I drink a lot of things - coffee, soda, wine, beer, any hot beverage - that I do NOT want my kids to take a sip of! Also, if he thinks he can drink out of ANY cup, you may run into problems at playdates & such. Just a thought!

You can transer him to a regular cup at any point. However there will be more mess. The sippy cup is really to make life easier for us moms not the children. I am still trying to get my little one use the sippy. I will be starting her on milk this week since she just had her one year appointment and would like to make the switch with the cup rather than her bottle. We will see how that goes. So I would let him use what ever your comfortable with and he is. We have a great little cup that is open mouth (no sippy spout) but she still just spits out what ever is in it.
Hope all goes well with not toooooo much messsss! lol
