Sinus/allergy Medicine That's NON Drowsy

Hi Moms,

It seems that I have sinus/allergy issues.. I'm 32 and never had sinus issues until last August. Went to an ENT and did an allergy test.. Shocked to find out I'm allergic to 9 things (one being my cat and my grass outside).. They want me to do allergy shots but I feel that's to extreme for "just" finding out I have allergies.... I need something that's NON drowsy that you would recommend... I tried alavert and it didn't help at all... I just got Claritin non-drowsy but still made me drowsy/sluggish/lazy......
I CONSTANTLY have mucus in my throat, which I'm assuming is a post nasal drip...Sometimes my ears feel full also. It's annoying to constantly clear my throat and I need to try something new... I just started the neti pot also...
Thanks moms!

I take real liquid Sudafed for teh drainage, it thins it out and makes the throat stuff much better. All of the oral allergy meds are going to make you drowsy, they are just made that way. Do what the doc says and see if he recommends a med that will do a better job like a nasal spray allergy med.

Hi Kg,

My son and I both have allergies. We take generic over the counter loratadine (from Walgreens it is called Wal-itin). Also take generic Mucinex which is just guafenesin- this one helps thin the mucus secretions so we don't have as much post nasal drip. My son calls it the snot medicine - Gross but funny.

You may find that many of the non-drowsy formulas actually make you a little sleepy at first since you are not used to taking this type of medicine. Steer clear of anything with a cough medicine or benadryl in it - those will put you to sleep. Of course, if you have an allergy attack at night Benadryl is wonderful.

Ask the pharmacist also - they know what will make you sleepy and always, always, read the labels. Get to know which medicines are which and what they do, especially the combo medicines - like the cold relief medicines are a combination of medicines, some of which you may not need. As you try different remedies you may want to keep of journal of how they affected you and when and how much you took.

I agree with post postponing the allergy shots if you have just been diagnosed. I have found that with regular OTC medication that my son and I have can manage our allergies without weekly shots.

Oh, if you have a really bad allergy attack, take a shower and change clothing - sometimes allergens get on your skin and clothes and make you react. This works really well for my son...plus the steam in the shower helps clear your head.

We are allergic to cats and dogs, and grass, and I think air sometimes- all the things we live with on a daily basis. LOL

Good Luck and feel better.

I used generic claritin. That never made me tired. Zyrtec made me really sleepy. Don't use anything with an anti-histamine. That will make you really sleepy. I also use pheyleprine when I have sinus pressure. That is non drowsy. I need to see an allergist soon as well. I have some major sinus and allergy problems that have been going on lately. I think I am allergic to something as well!
I use the Neil-Med sinus rinse. That works great for me. I have the post nasal drip as well. I get an itchy throat alot. But nothing seems to cure me. I don't know what to doooo!

Hi Kg,

A good absorbable multivitamin/mineral complex will help tremendously. Also, elderberry extract is natural and is an immune booster. It will help your body fight off the allergens. Local honey will help too. When I first started looking into natural remedies, a teaspoon of local honey in my coffee every morning helped a ton. My allergies are gone now because I do take the vitamin I mentioned and I also detoxed my home so nothing is tearing at my immune system. Both will work wonders.

Upper cervical chiropractic care is also a great way to keep your body healthy. The immune system is the key to almost everything!

God bless,

M.

Claritin
Sudafed "Non-Drowsy" formula
Zyrtec.... but it makes me drowsy, does not for my Mom
Allegra

My Husband has sinus issues... what HELPS him, is that on a daily basis... he uses a "Neti Pot" nasal flush. Even his Doctor uses it.
You can find it at any drugstore or Whole Foods.

hello
i think Zyrtec works quite well. when I feel a sinus issue coming on, I will take a child's dose (10m) and that does help me.I think better than a netti pot, is the medirinse in the plastic bottle. it uses more pressure than a netti pot.. however, since you have pressure in your ears, it may not be right for you.. However, if it is, I have found that since using it.. it has helped clear my sinuses more than anything.. once in the am and then in early evening...

My son used Claritin and Alavert off an on (more on than off) and never had good control of his allergies. Also Nasonex. They helped. In other words, his symptoms were lessened, but not gone.

He IS taking allergy injections now, but is also using Zyrtec. The Zyrtec works far better than the others he tried.

I'm sorry your dr. didn't give you more options, go back to the dr. or to specifically an allergist. You may need a prescription drug! I too did not develop bad allergies (and asthma) until my 30's, my son and I are both on Nasonex for our Allergies.

I also, have better luck with Zyrtec. Hope you find relief soon!!

How about buying so local honey at your grocery store? Take a teaspoon in the morning and one at night for a few weeks and see if it helps. Does wonders for me.
