I am a single mom of three young kids. I do work 35 hours a week in a elementary school but I am off two weeks in christmas, inservice days, and summer. What do single moms do for money? If I work another job then I have all the child care to pay for and all I would be paying for is childcare? In the summer I have no job or money what do people do? I though about being a dental hygentist or going back to school but do not know for what and like I said then I have the daycare? I know alot of women are in the same boat but i would like to know how they do it. I do not get out much to know anybody that would be able to help since I just moved to my area. My parents have been ill so I am own my own. I do not have time with work and kids to make any friends.

Have you thought about doing something from home? There are large varieties of businesses out there with large varieties of investment. We have several who are or have been teachers, day care workers etc.

This is a modern mother's dilemma! The childcare and gasoline cancels out the income.
I recently started a small business, and I don't expect much from it, but every bit counts. You could make something to sell, if you think there is a market for your skills/product. You could also offer to provide childcare or child pickup/drop offs for other families. I would just print up a notice and leave copies for your neighborhood.

One of my girlfriends cleans houses through craigslist. She earns around 15 dollars an hour and is able to set her hours around her school schedule. One of her children is in kindergarten and the other attends the daycare at her college. Because she is low income, she qualifies for subsidized childcare from the state and also her college offers discounted daycare. She also sets up daycare trades (with me and my kids, for example). She is very busy and often tired, but is also going to reap the rewards from her hard work and dedication in a few years. She is one of my heroes ;)

Why not have a summer daycare or be a summer Nanny? All states are different in what regulations are required - maybe you should look into it. I was a single Mom for 5 years and I was a Nanny 3.5 out of 5 of those. I went to nursing school and just got my Nursing License.

Since you work at school, could you post something that says you would watch some kids for the summer? Just make sure you only take one or however many you can fit in your car, unless you are in walking distance of pool, library, ect. Good luck!

You might be able to look into programs to help with day care... A friend of mine was having a hard time with daycare eating her income, and was able to get into a program that paid for all her daycare costs. All of them. All she had to do was prove her income, and prove how much she was working. The program covered the cost of childcare equivalent to the hours worked. Maybe this would help you out...

I understand your predicament, I've been there myself. There are plenty or places you could work, but the child care issue is real and some times it doesn't make sense to work when you pay it all out in child care and are still away from your kids. I found a job that worked for me, it was with a home party company. There are hundreds to choose from and it's a great way to get to know people and make money at the same time. The good thing about it is that you can schedule it for times that it's convenient for you. It generally doesn't have a huge investment to start, many times nothing, and you do get to keep your sample merchandise to use or resell making more money. There are so many types of home party plans, I'm sure you could find one that is of interest to you. Childrens clothing is a big seller, womans clothing, jewelry, books, toys, food, you name it, and there is a home party plan for it. You are your own boss and can build your business as you see fit. Generally there are very few sales quotas or restrictions, you just have to do some research. It really helped me over a very tough time financially.

Well an idea that I had, was since you work in a school and are off during the school breaks, why not do childcare during those times. You know there are parents who work, who have to shuffle to find day care for their kids during those times. Maybe you could even watch some kids from school that you know, and you'd only have them when you are off.
