Single Mom Thinking of Moving to NYC... Need Advice on Areas

I am a native new yorker. Depending on exactly where your opportunity is, there are MANY areas to consider. For example, if you will be working in Manhattan, near Penn Station, you can look at the Long Island Railroad line and live anywhere near stops on that. If you're working in Manhattan downtown near the Wall Street area, Brooklyn or Staten Island or maybe even New Jersey can be good options for you. If you're working in midtown or higher, Astoria or Forest Hills are good choices.

I cannot tell you for sure about the schools in those neighborhoods. What I can tell you is this. Astoria is a great neighborhood for young singles, and for young couples. Forest Hills is a nicer neighborhood for families, in my opinion, and is slightly more pricey. Send me a private message for my info, if you want. I'm VERY familiar with all of these areas.

Park Slope, Brooklyn is a nice neighborhood, as is Carrol Gardens, Boerum Hill, Brooklyn Heights.

Manhattan can be super pricey and getting into an area with a good school district is hard and drives up real estate prices. Upper East side has good school (in the 80s and 90s) as does the upper west side but both are super expensive.

Park Slope in Brooklyn. Lots of kids, good schools, but still kind of funky (in a fun, hip way).
