Hi C.,

My small employer wanted to provide me health insurance, but couldn't swing a business health insurance because of her personal health insurance with BCBS. I used ehealthinsurance.com and have an Aetna PPO plan with Dental. My plan is about 250 a month for me and my son, and we don't pay into the deductible until something MAJOR happens (surgery, hospitalization, ER visits, etc). Womanly visits are covered 100%, not subject to the deductible. My son and I (believe it or not) saved money by NOT being on the same plan together, so while we have the same exact type of plan, we are on different plans altogether.

Check it out. They were able to "recommend" a plan that best suited me after speaking with their customer service team. They were very friendly and helpful.

My husband sells Aflac and while it's normally sold to businesses and not individuals it can, it's just marketed to businesses.
I don't know where you live but if you live near Grand Rapids my husband can help you with a very nice policy. They have a sickness, dental, hospital, and a cancer policy and then something called an accident policy as well. It's great, good prices and wonderful pay out... they pay withing 3-5 days of the incident and they pay you cash as opposed to paying your doctor.
I can't explain it super well since I am not the agent but it's great and he's sold for many insurance companies and this is by far the best one he's ever come across.

At least check it out, talk to an agent and see what you think. My husband would be more than happy to help you but if you don't live close that is no problem, he could probably put you in contact with a more local agent.

just let me know.

Try Mi-Child insurance, there's also another one that is supposed to be really good. If I remember the name of it, I'll respond back. I do know that they're both out of Michigan for our citizens, especially the children.

Check out ehealthinsurance.com or mayby it's ehealth.com we used insurance off of there when my husband was getting his grad degree and we were living off $9 an hour with our first kid. It's a great sight that you put in what's important to you (low copay, covered well visits etc). It compares major insurance companies in your area (and a few less known ones) anyway, it should give you a good idea of what you can get for your money...try tweaking what you put in if you don't like your results at first...a $20 copay instead of $10 etc.

Good luck! Health insurance is a neccasary evil!

C.,

When I began buying health insurance for our family I went to ehealthinsurance online and compared the plans. I first went with a United Health Care plan that was cheap month to month but it had a very high deductible so each time anyone was sick we had to pay 100% of the bill until we reached that deductible of $2500. I have since switched to a BCBS plan that has no deductible and a 30% copay on most things. Preventative care for the kids and adults is covered 100%. The monthly cost for us (2 adults, 2 young children) is about $400/month. I have been very happy with this type of plan. I also work in health care as a Physical Therapist so I know what to look for in a plan. I wish you luck in finding the right insurance for yourself and your family.

Consumer Reports has an article on this subject in its current issue and gives a lot of good tips on what to look for. Unfortunately it doesn't seem like there is much that is affordable and has good coverage, so shop carefully.

I'm sorry about your situation. I'm in the same boat. I homeschool my 2 boys and my husband left in January. (they'll go to school next year but makes the job hunt difficult for this year.) The divorce will be final in August. The boys are covered but I am not. I'll be watching the responses to see what's out there. Good luck!

As a self-employed business owner, you may to seek an experienced agent who represents many health insurance companies so the agent can give you several quotes for your comparison. I highly recommend giving Keith Parke of CBI Agency in Waterford a call toll free 866-488-2603. He can walk you through several options and he specialized in working with self-employed business owners. http://www.cbiagency.net
