Seems "silly" to ask but has anyone had to remove silly putty from carpet? What will get it out?

What can I do next?

OMG! This has happened to me so many times you'd think I had learned the first time not to buy it for my kids any more. I just keep thinking the kids are a little older and they will be a little more responsible about it, NOT. I don't have any bright ideas, I'm hoping to learn something from the other moms' suggestions, just giving you my sympathy. Good Luck with the removal!!

Okay, this is going to sound weird, and it takes awhile, but it works for everything, and you can't even tell anything was on the carpet. You trim it out. I don't mean taking the scissors and cutting a big hunk out of your carpet, but most messes, if you really get down and look closely, only effect a few individual strands of carpet or only the very tips of several strands. Therefore, if you cut out only the pieces or parts of pieces that have the silly putty on them, you should be able to get it out without ruining your carpet. I have done this with melted candle wax (red) and paint, both on white carpet. If you take your time and do it carefully, it really works.

Hey D.!

You need to get a product I use that removes permanent marker, grease, crayon and it won't bleach your carpet. It can remove other things off carpet like lip stick, red wine, pet stains, etc...so I know it would remove silly putty too. It doesn't have any chemicals in it so it is safer for you to use and actually works wonders. We used to use Resolve or Spot Shot before but it has too many harmful side effects for you to be around and inhale into your system. So you will want to get something that is safer but works! Email me for specifics on the product and the store I shop from :) Or visit www.livetotalwellness.com/cindygeoff or www.2abetterlife.com to request more info. I have used these products and started shopping from a store that saves me time and money for about 2.5 years now and love it! Cindy

When my son got silly putty in the carpet, we used WD-40 and it took it right out and didn't stain the carpet. I don't know if it will be harder to get out if it's been there a while, but it's worth a try.

You might try a product called GooGone. test in a hidden area first though to make sure it will not bleach out your carpet. It took Black Sharpie off of my wallpaper!!

Good Morning D., sounds like my 3 yo gr son came to visit you ;) Hum that is a toughie, i didn't read the other posts to your question. But I would call a carpet cleaning service and just ask them if there is a way to get it out with out professional service. I loved silly putty as a kid, and found it one time in my tennis shoe. It pulled right out though.
I have had play dough in the carpet and candle wax, kool-aid, pepto bismo all over everything. But never silly putty YET.

If you haven't tried different things yet, might spray it with simple green or a carpet cleaner. I just had a Brain
(f**t) Light come on. No idea if it will actually work. Silly putty is oily, try sprinkling some cornmeal or baking soda on it to soak up the oil in it and see if it will peel up after. Do a small part and see if does anything...lol

Other then that D. call a carpet service and just ask. Can't hurt anything now.

Good Luck to you, let us know what worked

PS I might need to know later also, still have the 3 y/o & his baby brother coming into mischief soon. ;)

Have you tried one of the lemon/orange oil based cleaners? For the life of me I can't remember the name. But it's bright yellow, smells good and say's right on the bottle that it melts glue and such. I'm not sure though that's the same as silly putty.
