Hi mommies,

I have a one year old little girl who for the last two days has had diareaha. It has gotten so bad that she has gotten a terrible diaper rash from it. I have her soley one pedialyte and crackers and I do have a doctors apt for her tomorrow but does anyone have suggestions on what I should be doing to help her until then? I feel so bad and can't stand to see her hurt.

What can I do next?

I know it's so sad to see our babies hurt, but especially their little hinnies :( My son just went through a similar problem except his diarrhea was so bad that his stomach acids burned his skin and he blistered on his little bottom. Now we are caring for his wound much longer than the diarrhea lasted.

For your question though, My sister totally swears by the BRAT diet for diarrhea - her son gets it with EVERY new tooth. BRAT = bananas, rice, applesauce, & toast. I tried mixing brown rice with applesauce for my son, though and he hated it. So what I've been making is his infant oatmeal mixed with applesauce or bananas and that has helped a lot in firming things up down there.

Whenever my little one has diahrea I always combat it with feeding him Bananas. Bananas help harden their stool. But don't do it for too many days because then you'll be dealing with constipation! It never ends.

I hope she feels better. She might have something simple like an earache. I know when my son was really sick one time, it all came down to him having an earache and he wasn't showing any signs of that - no tugging on ear or rubbing ears.

Good luck!

My son suffered like this at one because he thought it would be funny and lick the bottom of his shoe yuck and got really sick. The best thing to do for the rash is keep it moist. I used vaseline and DR. Smiths diaper ointment this stuff works so much better than the others since my son has very sensitive skin and for the diarrea the other moms that responded are right make sure she has a lot of fluids and soft foods. hope she feels better.

Hi Anastatia,

So sorry to hear about your little girl. If I were you, I'd call the pediatrician again and have them see her today. With diarrhea she could get dehydrated and at her age, it could be even more serious. Any pediatrician should make time in their schedule to see a sick patient, especially one as young as your daughter. Sometimes you just have to be insistent with the person you talk to when you call the doctor's office and trust your insticts.

If she is willing and able to have the pedialyte, that's great. It should help prevent dehydration. I would think that any clear liquids are good, but pedialyte will help replace the electrolytes. If you go to Walgreens or CVS they also have peidalyte pops - like the frozen pops you can buy at the grocery store, but they have pedialyte in them.

Good luck. I hope she feels better soon.

I was thinking the same thing, she needs to see the doctor today. Other than that, it sounds like you're doing what needs to be done. I would just keep an eye on her bottom for diaper rash. I hope she feels better soon.

unfortunately that the best you can do. your keeping her electrolytes up with the pedialyte and giving her at least something to put in her little tummy. The Pediatrician should be able to give you something to help stop the diarrhea. Just hold on until then, and you could try a baking soda bath /soak for the diaper rash if its really bad.

Good luck :)
