Sick ALREADY?!

My son was home Wed night with a fever that persisted, so yesterday (Friday) I finally took him to the doctor to discover that he has strep throat! He was healthy ALL summer long when I was available to be home with him and now in the 2nd week of school he is sick! (I take classes, so I had to miss school too) I realize that him going to school is exposed to germs but I just think WOW! That came fast. (He's 6 and in 1st grade) I feel bad I didn't take him to the doctor sooner, but he was acting fine, just running a fever and saying his throat hurt. He seems to never lose energy. There we are at the doctor and he's bouncing around, pretending to be a whale and I'm standing there saying that he's sick... :-)

Any of you other Mamas have sick kids ALREADY?!

What can I do next?

My 4 year old had strep for the first time and had no fever. His appetite dropped and his tonsils were huge, but otherwise, he was pretty normal acting. I took him to the doc cause his tonsils freaked me out and he had MAJOR strep - the doc was amazed that he was as peppy as he was. He bounced back and I got it 2 days later and it floored me - sigh!

If you can teach him not to touch his face, that'll help a lot - it's really hard to do, though. It's the germs on the hands and touching the eyes/nose/mouth - mucus membranes - that spread the sick germs.

Hope he feels better soon!

Both of mine already have colds, and they have been healthy and non-sick since February. :( My daughter has been back since Aug. 16, and she came home and gave it to my son who doesn't even start his school until next week.

I hate the sickness that comes with back to school. It's inevitable. :( Hope your little one feels better soon. Have a great weekend!

Yep, 2nd week of school (day 8) stomach bug! I remember my daughter's first year of school she had strep 8 times! It was her first time in any type of school setting, and I asked her pedi if this was normal. He said that he had a patient that was home schooled until she was 12. When she started public school she was the same way. I guess no matter how much hand washing they do it's just how it goes...

My daughter was also out the second week of school. She had a double ear infection. She was complaining last Saturday that her ears hurt, but we had been swimming a lot, so I thought it was because of being in the pool. By Sunday afternoon, she had a fever, so I took her to urgent care so that we could get antibiotics sooner rather than later so that she wouldn't have to miss much school. They told me her ears were fine and strep test was negative and that it was a virus and we would just have to wait it out. By Tuesday, she was still spiking a low grade fever and complaining that her ears and throat hurt, so I took her to the pediatrician and he said she had a raging ear infection in one ear and the other one was well on it's way. I was so upset that the urgent care place missed this. She missed two days of school because of it and I was trying to be proactive to avoid that. Anyway, I guess it's just all of the new germs from the new kids and they like to share at this age (she's in Kinder). I'm sure it happens a lot. Hope he's feeling better!

We had trouble in the past when we did ECFE and a teacher/parent there suggested vitamins - not all year, only when they are in school. We do a half dose of a daily multi-vitamin and an immune-C vitamin when no one is sick, but the instant someone gets a runny nose or a cough or fever or whatever, we up it to a full dose. At the very least it seems to cut the duration and severity of the illnesses. My oldest did Pre-K last year and it seemed to help and we've already started preparing for K to start on Monday!

My 7 yr. old granddaughter got strep this Summer and ended up in the hospital with it. I thought we were going to lose her at one point. She wasn't really around anyone like at school. I am not sure where she got it so I know it was from general contact like a door handle or something.

Wow had no idea its the 2 week curse. My 3.5 yr old had a runny nose yesterday then woke from his nap with a 102 fever. No fever today, just a runny nose and back to his usual rambunctious self. I was so frustrated with being sick so soon, I had no idea it was so common!

My youngest has a runny nose and she said something about a sore throat once, but hasn't said anything about it again.

We just finished our second week as well. It's so frustrating, but I knew it was coming. Hope your little guy gets to feeling better soon.
