Sick 5 Yr Old

My 5 year old has had a very rough time with catching every little illness that he is exposed to. He is in kindergarden and with the exception of his first year of life, he has been at home with either his dad or myself. He has had the flu, swine flu, strep throat, scarlet fever.. the list goes on and on. But, most recently, the past 5 weeks he has been sick now 4 times. Week 1 he had the flu, week 2 was actually well, week 3 he had rotavirus, week 4 was hospitalised for fever that lasted 6 days and tested for kawasakis disease but it appeared to be just a random virus, now week 5 he has a sotmach virus. In addition to him, I have 3 other children. In this 5 week period my 1 yr old had the rotavirus (she gave it to my 5 yr old) and my 3 year old twins now have what appears to be the same virus that my 5 year old was hospitalised for, but they have not had any issues that compare to what my 5 year old is going through... My Dr. seems to think that this is all normal.. that because I have 4 kids that they are all exposed to so much and bringing it home and then spreading it all around. I cant help but think that there is something more to it for my 5 year old. Sooooo my question is 1) what do you moms do to keep your kids healthy? and 2) Am I being paranoid in thinking this is excessive for him to be so sick all the time?

In response to the first few responses... He had asthma as an infant but has seemed to grow out of it. He has seen an allergy specialist and after doing the allergy testing, found he is not allergic to anything so he shouldn't have excessive issues that are allergy related. I would say we arent the best at hand washing but we are religious about using germ-x... guess with all 4 its easier to use that then to have water fights at the sink ever hour. also, i dont at all claim to have the cleanest house in america, but i do an ok job... floors swept and vaccumed daily, bathroom cleaned every other day, dishes done daily... but when we had the rotavirus in the house a few weeks back my husband and I went crazy cleaning every nook and cranny.... we cleaned our carpet, got all the kids new mattresses and pillows... did what we could to try to "disinfect" our home, yet hear we are still sick.. I am almost to the point where i would stand them on thiwir head for 5 min every hour if someone told me that would make them better! lol

What can I do next?

You are not being paranoid. Just frustrated like the rest of us! I am mom to 2 boys, 2 years and 4 years. They have always been to daycare with the exception of an 8 month stint at home with a nanny last year. Since January, we have averaged a fever bug every 3-4 weeks. We have also had a stomach bug (whole house), croup, multiple sinus infections, and roseola. It is the most frustrating feeling in the world. I took my 2yo son to the doctor Monday (fever bug)and asked if it was possible for him to have an immune globulin deficiency. She said it was not likely since he is growing and thriving and reaching his milestones and that a fever bug once a month is no big deal for his age. My 4yo can have up to 7-8 fever bugs a year and still be within the average for his age group. Like you, I am researching ways to keep them healthier. We are starting a daily multivitamin with immune booster (get them at Walgreen's) and trying to be absolutely diligent that they wash their hands before all meals and snacks.
Good luck and hang in there! I hope all of our kids get better soon!

I work at a peds office and I can tell you that this winter has been one of the worst I've seen. My co-worker says its the worst shes seen in 15 years! Both of my kids have been sick this winter with colds, ear infections, pink eye, and my son just got over pneumonia. And my kids are normally very healthy kids. You sound like you're doing a great job, so just hang in there!

Have you tried going with natural remedies? Sounds like his immune system isn't working properly.

Have you checked your cleaning supplies - especially laundry detergent as we're basically married to it. He could have allergies to the chemicals. A good place to check and see what's in the things you use and the potential health risks - www.householdproducts.nlm.nih.gov/ingredients.htm
Chemical ingredients to look out for:
• Sodium hydroxide
• Hydrochloric acid
• Butyl cellosolve
(2-Butoxyethanol)
• Formaldehyde
• Bleach (sodium hypochlorite)
• Ammonia
• Sulfamic acid
• Petroleum distillates
• Sulfuric acid
• Lye (potassium hydroxide)
• Morpholine

It's your 5 year olds first year of kindergarten and he is being exposed to lot of new things he s going to ge sick. I know this year has been rough for a lot of people. Do you vaccinate your kids? The flu, swine flu, and rotavirus are things that he coul have been vaccinated got. I know they aren't 100% but it would have reduced his chance of getting them. Not much you can o to prevent strep/scarlet fever except really stress god hygiene. I think in a few years you will notice he doesn't get sick as often. My older son rarely passes things to my younger son.

If by chance he has allergies, I would guess that his immune system is struggling because it is dealing with the record allergy season we are having the last 6 wks or so. Other than that, my neighbor has 4 kids under the age of 7. Currently, every one of them is sick with multiple illnesses including colds, pink eye, stomach bugs, and ear infections. Apparently they are all picking up different bugs and sharing them with each other. If your 5 year old contines to get sick much more often than the others, I would suspect allergies. Good Luck. Hope they get better soon.

There are 2 products I reccommend. You could do either or both. My absolute favorite is Ultimate Aloe juice. My kids are on this. It not The other product is called OPC3. There is a kids version now. It's just an all natural anti oxidant that also boosts the immune system. I have to say my kids never get sick. Using these products and working with doctors I know a lot about them so if you have any questions please feel free to message me.
Hope it helps.

I keep my kids fairly healthy by not using anti- bacterial soaps, plenty of time outside, very limited TV time and lots of water to drink and fruits and veggies every day.
No you are not paranoid but some kids get sick easier so make sure your little kids are washing their hands frequently and get plenty of water to drink.
Good Luck!
