My 12 month old has been acting very strange today. This morning he was crying a lot and just wanted to be held. I thought maybe he was just very sleepy. I took him to his sitter and he seemed fine when I droppped him off. She called later to tell me he is very sleepy and has been just laying in the floor all morning. My husband went and picked him up and he just started running a fever. He has not make a sound since my husband picked him up. He is drinking milk but not eating solids. He just took some Motrin and we are waiting to see if he is responsive before we get him in to the doctor. Any suggestions?

I just had the same thing happen with my daughter. We ended up taking her to the doctor and she had bronchitis. The doctor prescribed an antibiotic and a day later she was doing much better.

My son was like that a couple of weeks ago. Out of the blue daycare called me one day at lunch and said he hasn't been himself this morning and now he has a fever. So I brought him home that afternoon, fever through the next day...went to the dr. and he had strep throat. With my kids I know if they have a fever, there is some sort of virus or infection in them. Just watch him and see, if the fever doesn't go away I would definietly take him in.

HOpe he feels better!

If a little one is lethargic that is an urgent need to see a doctor.

Take him to the Dr. We had the same thing this week around our house and we had an ear infection. The Motrin might make help but chances are he has an infection and can't tell you what hurts. Good luck.

When my son was about this age I also received a call from the sitter saying he wouldn't eat and was very lathargic. He began running a fever and we took him to the Urgent Care clinic. It turns out he had an ear infection. Try not to give your child milk when he has a fever. It curdles in the stomach. Give him plenty of water and Pedialyte.

Are you sure he hasnt ate anything he shouldnt have? IE medicines or worse? I WOULD TAKE HIM TO THE DOCTOR ASAP! Very sleepy to me could be more than just sick. You never know. I'm sure he will be fine but toddlers can get into anything. God bless and good luck.

Keep up the motrin. But it is very important that you keep him hydrated with any kind of liquid that he will drink. Offer him a drink every 15 minutes. I know this sounds like a lot but it will make a huge difference. Also...call your Drs office right away and ask the nurse advice. Good luck sorry your baby is sick.

Sounds like the typical virus. Just alternate Motrin and Tylenol with 6 hours in between. It is fine that he doesn't eat alot for a couple days, as long as he is drinking water...if he starts vomiting from the virus, then limit his water intake to sipping an ounce or so every hour or so. (You can buy clear medicine, so it doesn't stain everything.) It is not unusual for a baby's fever to stay 103 degrees for a couple days. But I personally, feel more comfortable taking my children to the doctor if it stays 103 + for more than a day. Before he goes back to childcare, be sure that he is off the Motrin and Tylenol for the night and still not running the fever a couple hours after being up.
If the stops wetting or if his urine if a dark yellow in color, you need to get some Pedialyte down him.
If you suspect a secondary infection, then the doctor might want to give him an antibiotic.
I am just a mom that has been through this, so you should confirm what I am saying, with the nurse over the phone, at least.
It is hard seeing your child lethargic, but it's just the way God designed our bodies to react when fighting a virus. Take care,
K.

Have you felt his gums! He is the right age to be getting additional teeth! The back ones start coming in and they are painful--My kids and my grandkids all ran fever with them. Just feel around in his mouth. Also check his throat for swollen tonsils or little white blisters (Strep)--all will make kids not want to eat and run a fever and become lethargic! If the throat looks bad get to a doctor!

My son has been the same way this week. I took him in on Monday afternoon to the dr., but it was a different dr. than his regular one. After waiting over an hour, she said it was just a cold and teething, then walked out after barely looking at him, without giving me a chance to say anything. I was furious, so I called back to the dr. on Tuesday. I couldn't take him back to see his regular dr. yesterday (she was out of the office), and he has an ear infection. I say trust your gut. If you think something is wrong, then call your dr. back and let them know you would like to bring him in sooner than his appt. time. If he's acting comlpletely out of character and doesn't want to eat, and has a fever, then he's definitely got some kind of infection. The sooner he gets seen, the sooner you can figure out what's wrong and how to treat him. I know how helpless you feel when your little one is sick and can't tell you what's wrong. It's horrible! I hope he gets to feeling better soon!

Take him to the doctor immediately! Anytime a child is running a fever and unresponsive it makes me concerned. Milk is not good if he is running a temp. It could curdle in his tummy. He needs water or pedialite. If he is running a temp he will be dehydrated and milk does not replace the electrolytes lost from the fever. In the very least call your Pediatrician and explain the symptoms to them. It is always better to error on the side of caution.

Get him in to the pediatrician - plain and simple. Don't mess around with those symptoms.

#1 -- follow your mommy instincts. if you feel you should take him to the doctor, do it. if you don't feel it's necessary, it's probably not & perfectly fine to stay put and nurture your sick little one at home.

#2 -- really be careful about giving medicine for fever alone. if your son is having trouble getting that all-important sleep when he's ill, that's one thing. but just to curb a fever (that's less than 104 or so), it is not really necessary and could only introduce a challenge (even if only slight) to his system to deal with the medicine as well as the illness. again, follow your instincts & don't think of yourself as a bad parent if you feel it's best to not treat the fever for now.

#3 -- if you have a central market, whole foods, or good health store around you, i'd pick up a bottle of sodium ascorbate (buffered, most-bioavailable form of vitamin c; comes in a powder, you just give your babe a pinch or two every so often). this has almost always curbed a full-blown illness for our 2 little ones (i.e. when our nephew had croup for a week & had to go to the ER twice in that time, my 3-yr old got it from him & only had symptoms of a cold for a couple of days - same with our 1-yr old. i dosed them with sodium ascorbate (to bowel tolerance) from the moment i found out their everyday playmate & cousin had croup.)

#4 -- ensure your son gets plenty of fluids and calories, though i'd limit dairy and sugars anywhere possible

$5 -- allow your little guy as much sleep and as few chills as possible

HTH & your baby is well soon!

My 15 month old is doing the exact same thing! He is at my mothers and I was thinking that he may be getting some of his molars, but he has never acted this sleepy before. He has never been sick and I called the pediatrician and he said to take his temp prior to any more doses of motrin and report back. His temp was 98.9 under the arm 2 hours after his mortin dose this am. I don't know what advice I can offer other than what my pediatrican said to do. If I find out anything further I will send you a follow up!
