Should I Deliver at Spring Valley Hospital or Southern Hills Hospital in LV, NV

Hello,
I am pregnant and looking for a new doctor since my OBGYN has retired :-( My doctor choice will be based on the hospital that s/he delivers at. I belive that I would like to deliver at either Spring Valley Hospital or Southern Hills Hospital. My primary concerns are the quality of the staff and having a private room. I will probably need a c-section as both of my other kids were delivered that way. Any info or opinions on these hospitals would be greatly appreciated. Also, any suggestions on a doctor that delivers at either of those hospitals would be appreciated!
Thanks,
akren

oops.. clicking troubles.
sorry, don't have any dr. suggestions for you, but i would make nursing staff a number one factor. since they're both fairly new hospitals, i would guess they have private rooms. Do some tours so you can start envisioning yourself there.

Good luck

First, a word on c-sections. Not just for you, but for all the women who posted on this thread, since I think every single one said they had a c-section (I also had one with my first, 2nd was a VBAC).
I volunteer for ICAN (Int'l Cesarean Awareness Network...http://ican-online.org) as the chapter leader for Southern Nevada. We have FREE monthly meetings near the St. Rose-San Martin hospital. Topics vary from VBAC to cesarean recovery to cesarean prevention and more. This month's topic is 'Breastfeeding After a Cesarean' with a very experienced and wonderful lactation consultant as our guest speaker. The meeting is TOMORROW (Thurs) morning (every 1st Thurs). Please call or email me if you're interested in attending.

You can absolutely go for a VBAC, if that's what you desire - even after two cesareans. Unfortunately, Vegas doesn't have a lot to offer when it comes to hospital VBACs. The doctors already mentioned are the main two I'm aware of who allow VBAC. They attend at Spring Valley and Summerlin. (UMC also allows VBAC) I've heard a few good things about two other OBs, but would prefer to disclose that info through a personal message, as I don't think they're wanting to put their names out there as VBAC-Friendly OBs.
SO, if you're wanting to go for a VBAC, DEFINITELY don't go to Southern Hills. I've not heard a ton of good stuff about that hospital, in general, but they've never done a VBAC that I've heard about.
I have heard quite a bit of positive feedback about Spring Valley, the nursing staff, Dr. Sauter, etc.
If you absolutely decide to have a repeat cesarean, then you'd want the most qualified OB/Surgeon you could get. I don't have quite as much info or recommendations for you in that case.

There ARE many homebirth midwives, ironically, who are very comfortable and experienced with VBAC in Las Vegas. Of course, some people feel this is a risky choice, but I put it out there just as another option, information. Most midwives, if not all, have free hour-long consultations, even if you're not going to have a homebirth. They're happy to answer any questions and are a great resource for any information on birth and our birthing community. I recommend at least talking with one or two, just to become educated and know your options. That way you can make truly informed decisions and not just do what one doc has told you to do.

I'm happy to talk with you further on any of these or other topics. This is my passion, to help educate women on their options for birthing. I'm not a certified professional (yet), but have plenty of recommendations on birth professionals to get you any help you might need.

Thank you,
N. Vickers

Hi A.,
My name is A. B. I am a nurse here in Las Vegas and the mother of one adorable 10 month old boy. I delivered at Southern Hills Hospital via c-section, The hospital is nice and clean, however, I was not particularly impressed with the nursing staff. The Nurse that preped me for the c-section was FABULOUS, as was the nurse that I had immediately after!!!!! However for the next 48 hours I was not impressed. While in Nursing school I had the opportunity to do my labor and delivery clinicals at spring valley and was much more impressed with their staff from the Labor and delivery to postpartum, nursery and NICU! My clinicals were 2 years ago, so I am not sure what the staff is like now, but they were fabulous. Spring Valley's postpartum rooms are a little bigger as well. They have a regular nursery and will take the baby to let you sleep if you so desire! They have lactation consultants on board that are more than willing to help if needed. I did not get much assistance with breast feeding or any helpful tips at Southern Hills. They handed me a sheet when I left with information for lactation consultants. While in the hospital they just gave me formula for the baby when he would not latch on and told me to just keep working at it with no other help! I had two friends deliver at Spring Valley and were both very happy there. Not sure who the Doctors are that deliver at spring valley though. Hope this helps. Best of luck to you. PS, all of the postpartum rooms are private at both hospitals.

I delivered at Southern Hills last year and had a great experience. My OB was Dr. Alexander Norton, and I thought he was great, and I also really liked his staff. As far as I can remember, all the rooms in L&D at Southern Hills are private.

I completely agree w/ the pp who suggested taking a tour at the hospital. I took a tour and had the chance to ask any questions I wanted, which was really helpful. I did also take my prenatal classes at Southern Hills, and I'm very sure that the nurse who taught those classes also does attend women as they're laboring since she ended up as my nurse for a huge chunk of my labor, which was very nice.

Hi A.,

Congratulations on your upcoming delivery! I had my son at Spring Valley hospital in January 2005 and had a very good experience. Dr. Michelle Lewis is my ob-gyn (located in Henderson; phone number - ###-###-####). I had a c-section with no complications. I also had a private room. I don't know if the staff are the same, but they give tours to expectant parents, and I would strongly suggest that. Also, if you are interested in Dr. Lewis, I would call soon. Her schedule stays very full.

Good luck with your decision and your delivery!

I know how you feel! My OBGYN moved after my first was born. :(
I'm delivering my 2nd at Spring Valley and have heard great reviews from a couple of my friends who had their 1st there. I have no choice in hospitals since I'm trying for a VBAC and was told that is the only hospital in the valley who will "allow" them. So, if you got to the point where you wanted to try for one, you'd be covered. ;)
My doctor is Dr. Timothy Sauter on Eastern and Wigwam; first, because he is one of two doctors in the valley who will "allow" a VBAC (the other is Dr. Harter). Sauter is very nice and seems to be great at what he does -- based on rave reviews from other patients and my 2 appointments with him so far. He's laid back and supportive, yet honest and will do what he has to do.
Whatever route you go, good luck with the rest of your pregnancy and happy delivery! :)
