Short Luteal Phase

I charted my BBT for the first time this month (and did some reading in the "Take Charge of Your Fertility" book). I definitely ovulated on day 16 as confirmed by both an OPK and my BBT thermal shift. Today I got my period on day 26, which means that my luteal phase is only 9 days long. From my reading I understand that that is too short for a fertilized egg to implant. I have called my doctor and left a message, and presume I will be talking to her soon about how to deal with that. In the mean time, I would really like to hear from others who had this same problem, how you dealt with it, and what sort of experience you had in dealing with it. Was it easy to treat? Did you give birth eventually? Thanks!

What can I do next?

Hello D.,

I had a short luteal phase before conceiving my third child. Sometimes it can be caused by low progesterone levels, but in my case the levels were fine. I took vitamin B6, B complex and vitex. My luteal phase (as well as my cycle) got longer and longer each month until I conceived my daughter. Hang in there and Good luck!

Hi D.,
I agree with the first response that you received. I am an acupuncturist that specializes in fertility and it is highly effective, especially for something like LPD. This demonstrates that your progesterone is low. You live in SF? I am a part of a fertility group of fantastic women that specialize in fertility...here is a link to our website with many practitioners norcalfertility.com. Although your doc could be helpful, they don't have many tools in the box other than drugs, which can either help or hinder your reproductive health. Herbs are a very useful tool to help strengthen the LP and make you fertile. That is the first priority verses just becoming pregnant.

Good Luck,

Hi D.,
I have kind of a humerous story about a similar situation. This is just what I experienced, but I started charting my temp and reading TCofYF the first month we were trying to get pregnant. I, too, appeared to have a short luteal phase. My temp shift was obvious and I had a bit of ovulation pain, so I was clear about when I had ovulated. Then my period came too soon. I set up an appointment with my OB and saw her a couple of weeks later to talk about my short luteal phase. I don't really remember what she said (other than that she didn't seem to be concerned at that point) because, as it turned out, I was actually pregnant with my son during that appointment! I had just conceived a few days earlier (following all the advice in the book). Perhaps the month w/ the short luteal phase was just a fluke for me, but again that's just my story. I hope you find that the same is true for you.

I had a short luteal phase and was put on progesterone. I now have a 7 month old son. He was conceived the cycle after I was diagnosed.

I short luteal phase doesn't necessarily mean you can't get pregnant, but it makes it harder. I highly recommend seeing an acupuncturist who specializes in fertility. This will work as well if not better than anything your OB/GYN can do for you, IMHO. I don't know of one if SF, but I can recommend Anca Sira in San Rafael. She has a website if you feel moved to go in that direction.

I didn't get pregnant, but it wasn't because of her work. I did however have wonderfully perfect cycles and incredibly minimized PMS as well!! Not to mention the emotional benefits of having my energy balanced in a challenging time. Unfortunately for me there's only so much you can do with one semi-functional tube :(
