Share You C-section Stories?

I am 23, almost 24 weeks, with twin boys. My water around one of the babies broke a little over two weeks ago and it's been a waiting game since. I'm holding up very well, as are both of the boys. We're at home on strict bed rest, praying contractions don't start and no infections happen. Babies are still growing and still have good heartbeats and cord blood flow. We see the doctor every week for ultrasounds.

Okay that is my current situation, but what I am looking for are your c-section stories. I know that when / if the situation takes a turn, they will be doing a c-section. I had signed up for a c-section class, but obviously I cannot attend under the circumstances. I have done a little research on the net, but I am most interested in hearing from you what your c-section was like and how I can/should prepare myself. I am especially interested in anyone who had an emergency c-section and delivered preemies, and anyone who had their surgery at Lutheran General would be even better as that's where we will be. I am trying to prepare myself as best as I can and you Mamas have always been so great with all of my other questions. Thank you!

What can I do next?

I had a c-section with both of my pregnancies. The first was un-planned, with my son. I was pushing for about 45 minutes and his heart rate kept dropping so they did an emergency c-section. I also had extreme pre-eclampsia so that one was hard b/c I couldn't get out of bed for the 1st 2 days after the surgery. That made recovery worse. Try to get up as soon as possible. My second was planned with my twins at Lutheran General, but they didn't want to wait until the planned date and I went into labor a week b/f we had scheduled. The 2nd time around was so much easier. I was out of the hospital after 2 nights, they wanted me to stay longer but I was ready to go. Lutheran General was great, very helpful and knowledgable staff. My doctor was Iannucci, great doctor!! I was also on bed rest for 16 weeks with my twins, it's hard but get your rest. I agree with another post, get the twins on a schedule as early as possible. My twins both had colic, very long 1st 4 months, but we are passed that now and they are great sleepers and eaters now. I owe it to my husband for enforcing the schedule, I am a softie. Good luck, hope all turns out good for you and your babies.

I've had three c-sections. All three were scheduled. I was scared to death for my first one. I wanted a natural delivery, but my daughter was breech with one leg down. The doctor tried turning her around, but she wouldn't budge! Anyway, everything turned out fine. I was Christmas shopping within the week after getting home from the hospital. My other two c-sections were a breeze, because I knew what was going to happen and felt more in control. Try and stay positive, if things don't go the way you have planned (vaginal birth), you will still end up with two beautiful babies. I wish you the best of luck.

I don't have a c-section story but I do have 21 mth old twins. I wanted to tell you to take care of yourself drink TONS of water and stay OFF your feet! You can care your twins for several weeks as they are as long as you follow the doctors orders. Lutheran Gen has one of the best NICU departments around and if your little ones are early that is where you want them to be.

I don't know where you live but look on the net for twin groups in your area and they could help you out even more. My twin group was my saving grace when I went on bed rest at 30 weeks (I went into labor but it was stopped).

Good luck and take care of you (and the babies).

I had a c-secton at 34 weeks due to a complicated pregnancy and I thought it was so easy. I have or had and extreme fear of needles and let me tell you that after it was over I kept saying that I didn't really fel like I had even given birth! I'm sure every situtation is different, but just take it as it comes and do not let the fear consume you. You'll get through it! Good luck!

I had a c-section with both my pregnancies. I was terrified for the 1st one. I shouldn't have been, it went so smooth and the recovery was pretty painless, I went home after 2 days and didn't even have to take painkillers after I got out of the hospital.

The 2nd one was a little bit more difficult, mostly because I had a 21 month old toddler at home to contend with. I made myself stay in the hospital 4 days (which is the max you can stay for a c-section). I was pretty much back to normal as soon as I had the staples out, which was after a week. Oh, the 2nd was at Lutheran, it was great, I love my doctor and all the staff at the hospital are wonderful.

Good luck! Try looking at the bed rest as a blessing, you won't be getting much sleep after the babies come!

If you're concerned about having a c-section or about any of your care, I would seek a second opinion. Twins does not have to equal c-section and vaginal birth has many benefits for mom and baby.

That said, c-sections are very common and performed every day. The risk of complications is relatively low. Since your c-section is planned in advance it will probably be less hectic and easier on you. Best wishes to you and babies!

First of all, congratulations on expecting twin boys!! My twin girls just turned 2 on Jan 29th. I don't know about handling preemies since my girls were delivered at 36 weeks. But I have had 3 c-sections in the past 4 years. (The twins were my 2nd.)

The first time was a little scary just b/c I didn't know what to expect. It was not an emergency but it was unplanned (I was in labor for 41 hours but was unable to deliver vaginally.) The recovery from the 1st was the easiest by far. Probably b/c I didn't have any older children to take care of! There was some discomfort and I had to take it easy for a while (no heavy lifting, easy on the stairs, etc), but they should keep you in the hospital for a few more days than a vaginal delivery. That gives you more time to heal before you have to go home and take care of the little ones.

It will take some time getting used to handling 2 babies at once and finding your groove, but you'll get there. I recommend getting on a schedule as soon as possible. That was what worked best for me -- when they ate & slept at the same time.

And if you don't already have help lined up, maybe you could start enlisting helpers. It's better to have help and not need it than to need it and not have it. (Although I don't know of any mother of newborns would couldn't use another pair of hands, even if all you want to do is take a shower!)

Good luck to you. I hope that your boys stay healthy and that you have a wonderful experience. Enjoy it because it goes so fast!

I think the only way to prepare is to make sure that your spouse (or someone that can help you get around and can help with the twins) is available for you for two weeks after the delivery. I had my husband available for two weeks and my mom for one week. I would suggest to alternate the dates so that you have at least one person there for you. My husband let me sleep nights in our spare bedroom for about 3 evenings after I returned home. Just getting the rest helped out immensely. Every day was better than the previous one.

I hope this helps. Good Luck!
