Hi, I have a 20 month old that has been waking up from naps shaky. He also always seems to be hungry and wants to eat and munch all day long. Does anyone have any experience with this? Could this be hypoglycemia? Any advice welcome.

What can I do next?

My niece wakes up shaky, and when she was little we were all concerned. In her case, the shakes were when she FIRST woke up. She'd come down the hall rubbing her eyes and shaking. It was scary. She'd come sit on your lap and her little hands were so jittery. After she was fully awake (about 10-15 min.) she was fine. The doctors said not to worry about it, unless there were other symptoms, since it only happened when she first woke up, and it stopped on its own.
I would be concerned about hypoglycemia if the shaking stops only when you feed him.
Since I am not a medical expert, you may want to question your pediatrician, because as we all know each child is different.
I just wanted you to know that some kids just wake up shaky. My niece is almost 10 and still does this, but neither of her sisters do.
Blessings,
C.

My 20 month old daughter also shakes after she very first wakes up, and seems very disoriented. Once she fully wakes up it stops. I also used to babysit this little girl who did the same thing around the same age. She is now 6 and perfectly healthy. I think that maybe some kids just do this, although I will be bringing it up to her doctor at her next check up to get a professionals opinion.

i have not experienced this, but the shakiness seems scary... just get it checked out with a doc, could be a blood sugar thing, but you want to make sure it is not a nuerological thing. probably not, if he seems ok after eating.... go to your doc, and if you do not love your doc, find another one, there are so many good pediatricians around.

sometimes my son would wake up like that. he would quickly ask for a drink and within the hour he would be ok. it didn't happen all the time just once every few weeks, but I noticed it usually happend when he hadn't had a drink before going to bed at night...
I know this isn't much to help you but maybe try giving him some water or watered down gatorade... before naps/bedtime

could abasolutely be hypoglycemia
I had a mild form of that growing up and that is how I felt.
Best have him tested and feed high protein
Maybe a little juice right after nap until you can get him a good meal ready

My daughter has hypoglycemia as does my mother. I get it on occasion especially when I am pregnant. There is no treatment for it except food. When my daughter is having a melt down I give her a cup of soy milk, crackers or something to eat and within minutes she is calm and feeling good again. There is nothing wrong with kids grazing thoughout the day. Maybe he is growing again and need the extra fuel???
