Severe Fall

My three year old son fell and hit his forehead h*** o* the corner of a wooden step 16 days ago. He cried, never lost consciousness, and a huge, huge bump immediately appeared. We put ice on it and that was that.

The bruise colored like it should, purple, yellow, brown, etc. and was clear in color yesterday although the bump was still very visible. Today, however, there is a red color.

So, two questions: 1. Why is there a red color? 2. Is it unusual that a bump is still there 16 days later?

I will be going back to the doctor tomorrow (somehow I'll make it in the storm!) due to the red color. But just hoped that someone out there may have some of your own thoughts about this. A coworker told me that her niece was hit in the head with a bat and the bump never went away (great...).

THANK YOU VERY MUCH!!

What can I do next?

If that should ever happen again, just call 911 that is what we did and the local parametics came to the house and checked out my son. And there is no charge for that. My Mom was here when it happened and she is the one who told me to call.

It might be a hematoma (sp?) which is a deep injury to the tissue. My little guy at 9 months got one on the side of his head by his temple. It eventually went away when the blood was absorbed back into his system. It took several weeks for this to happen. Definitely have the doctor check it out. Our doctor even had us get head x-rays just to make sure all was well because he was so young.

When my now 5 1/2 year old daughter was a little more than two, she was running around pretty fast in our house, tripped, and hit her head on a projecting wall corner. I've never seen a bump come up so fast! Her father and I grabbed her, raced downstairs, and got ice on it within a minute. It was a gigantic egg, with a huge verticle line up and down the middle of it where she hit the actual corner of the wall. I thought her skin would split open because the bump was so big and growing so fast, but the ice stopped the swelling and the skin did not split. It took a very long time for the bump to go away. I don't remember the color progression exactly, but the bump was there along with the huge line/crease for a couple of weeks at least. Even now, if the light hits her forehead just right, sometimes you can see a small indentation where the line had been. I'm pretty sure its the kind of thing only a parent can see. She's fine and it all healed with no problems. Good luck!!

You should take him in to the doctor or the emergency room to get a CAT scan and/or MRI to make nothing else is wrong.

I think you are right just to take him into see the doctor. If the bump is hot I would get him in sooner (maybe the hospital) because that would indicate infection of kind.

What's his pediatrition say? The bump could be from a break in the bone that should have been looked at or exrayed. Get him to the dr. or at least call and let his nurse know. Better to be safe than sorry mommy.
