Separating Twins, New Rooms & Toddler Beds

We are the blessed parents of boy/girl twins. Since birth, they have shared the same room with their own cribs. It's a joy in the mornings to hear them laugh, "talk" and giggle with each other. We are considering adding another baby to our family soon and will have to convert the guest room to a bedroom for someone(s). We are also hoping to build a larger house in a few years as well.
Their are still in their cribs that will convert to a toddler beds but we are unsure when to do that. We've heard to keepthem in the cribs as long as possible. :o)

At what age have others separated their twins? What can we expect when we do give them their own rooms?

Thanks!

What can I do next?

Hi A.,
While I'm not the mother of twins...I am a twin. My parents let me and my sister share everything for way too long. Luckily we were both girls. We even had to share a full size bed. At the age your children are this may be fine. But since you're concidering building a house, also make sure to allow them individual space. My sister and I fought constantly when we were younger. I think it was because we were refered and treated like "The Twins". No individuality! Now we are extremely close. We are also extremely different.
As for my children...I have a boy and a girl that are two years apart. And while they each have different rooms and different toys, I always find them together in one room or the other. In fact on weekends they usually fall asleep watching TV in one room or another. So I feel that by allowing them thier individuality...it has made them closer.
Hope my babbling helps.

Hi A.,

Being a mother of b/g twins I can relate. my twins are almost 7 now. They shared a room until they were 3 then toddler beds were the right thing to do for them and they were seperated into their own rooms. Oh sure they would go into each others rooms but only when asking. We try to give them their own space and let them grow as indiv not in the class of "twins". Hope I was some help

Hi A.. I don't know how much help this is, but I was wondering if you are absolutely set on separating them. My brother and I (he's 4 years younger than me) shared a room until I was in 5th grade by choice. I had a room I could move into, but we loved being in the same room together. Then, even once I moved into my own room, my brother would often come and sleep on my floor.
I don't know how you feel about this, but I just thought I would throw that out.
Hope you figure something out.

That's great! twins run in our family as well. As far as who moves into guest room, maybe in the begining the new baby, it can be h*** o* the elder child(ren) when small as another baby comes along. After they get a little older ( depending on sex of baby) maybe have the the twin and new tot share a room. The twins will always have a connection, even if one sneaks out from another room to see the other. Also would suggest keeping in crib ( lowering the mattress setting) till at least age two and maybe a littel longer. I found these great kind of canopy sheer tents at baby toys R us. They go over the crib so twins can see each other, yet be safe from falling over crib railing. My OB also had twins boy girl and suggested that. However with our elder tot was barely 1 and a half when we got preggie again...so we decided to make his crib into a tot bed in order for me to be able to get him in and out of bed without having to pick up. I put the bed against the wall on one side, then a safety guard on the open side ( safety first makes a L shaped guard part goes under mattress the other makes a guard to keep tot from rolling off bed at night and gateing off the room so if they wake up, contained to room untill you hear them ( lol)....hope this is helpful....V.

I had my now 4 yr old twins seperated at one point, because they would not fall asleep together, they would play until all hours of the night. They had a hard time whining for each other until they would fall asleep, but it didnt last long. Now they are in the same room, because we moved to a smaller place, and they are going to sleep just fine. We learned a little secret they can share a room just not a bed. So they are in the same room just seperate beds and it works great, they still play and talk some nights for a while, but nothing like before.

Although I do not have twins, I moved both my girls into "big girl" beds at the age of 2. By this time they are starting to develop indipendance and will want to start doing things on their own. You may even want to wait until a new addition is soon to arrive and include them on the entire process of choosing rooms. Who knows they may want to share each others company for many years. Don't under estimate your childrens intelligence at such youn ages. By 2.5 my youngest was very verbal and very independant "ownself" was the #1 word and still is. (she is now 3) I let them choose their bedding and this seems to help alot with the transition.
Have a good day :0)

I don't have twins, but I do have a 2 year old still in her crib. She doesn't try to climb out of it yet, so I've decided to keep her in it as long as possible. We tried a toddler bed a few months ago before the new baby was born. It didn't go over well. She's very attached to her bed. As long as they are sleeping well and not climbing out, I wouldn't move them. Also, we plan for our children (girl 2 and boy 3 months) to share a room until they are around school age. We have an office that we aren't willing to give up at the moment. We don't plan to have more children, but will eventually remodel to have an additional room. I have friends that shared rooms with their brothers until puberty so I don't think it's a big deal for little ones to share. I wouldn't change anything if there is no problem.

I am a mom of 2 year Twin GIRLS. Both are super naughty and started climbing out of cribs around 17-18 months (They slept in cribs in separate rooms). Since this was a safety issue we packed their cribs and put them together in the nursery with a King size bed which we pulled in from the guest bedroom :)
One of the twins keeps running back to my bed, 'cause the other one wakes her up. So we are thinking of putting in 2 twin beds first in the same room and then move them to separate rooms all together. My girls even though twins have very distinct personality. And I very much agree on other moms to have separate rooms if it permits. For most part Twins should be treated as siblings.
