I'm looking for a summer theater class for my 9 yr old son. Can anyone refer me to any organizations that give lessons and/or put on a performance? We live in Glenview.

What can I do next?

The Metropolis Theater in Arlington Heights does this. I think the program is called Cutrains Up. Good luck!

Check out the Improv Playhouse in Libertyville - http://www.improvplayhouse.com/. My stepsons (age 12 and 10 at the time) did the full-day camp for two weeks last summer and enjoyed it. It was a 1/2 hour drive for us, but it was worth it. Hope you find what you're looking for!

Light Opera Works has a great program they are in Evanston, there is usually something amazing at Indian Boundary Park (IN the chicago park district, so probably too far. I wonder if your local park district has something? These are usually taught by pros!

There is a great place in Vernon HIlls here called The Wishing Star Theatre. They do b-day parties and plays they are a teaching theare place. it is great and you will be more than satisfied but it will take you some time to get here 15 minutes with out traffic. We live here and travel to Glenbrook Hospital and it takes us a good 20 minutes but I am aobut 10 min from the express way.

I think the Metropolis Theater in downtown Arlington Hts. would be a good place to look into. It's probably about a 20 minute drive from Glenview. I have heard good things about the place. I've only seen professional performances there, but I know they offer summer classes for kids.

Second City offers classes year around and they have a summer session coming up - maybe starting in May? They are just off the train (two blocks), so convenient for anyone.

In Evanston, there's the Piven Theater which has great classes for kids. Also, in the same building (The Noyes Arts Center) there is a group that does circus arts and it's a great program. They learn all kinds of circus arts and acrobatics and then incorporate them into a play and put on a show. We saw The Lion King there and it was very, very creative and fun. The arts center is on a park so the kids can practice some things outside and get fresh air.

Lifeline Theatre has first-rate classes for kids. They're in Rogers Park in Chicago, so not super far from Glenview.

Have you checked Old Town School of Folk Music? oldtownschool.org
They have great summer camps, some of which are for acting/plays. We've taken classes there for years and adore the staff and classes.
Good luck!

In Evanston/Skokie, Northlight Theater has a kids summer program. The Light Opera works does week long sessions culminating in a performance on Saturdays. Its pretty low key so if you're looking for a more "get my kid on a professional track" experince this is not if. If that's what you want check into the Wilmette Theater. I know they have classes and they work with NU theater school and they are pretty professional.
