I would like to know if anyone knows of any type of girls group or organization where my 13 year old can meet some girls her age. She is an only child and she is very shy. She has had a difficult time making friends her age. She is very tall and she is going thru the akward stage. I am very worried about her spending so much time by herself and I would like for her to meet some nice girls her age. If anyone has any ideas, I would really appreciate hearing them. Thanks.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

I would like to thank everyone for the numerous suggestions and ideas. You guys truly amaze me with your kindness and consideration. Though Mamasource networking my daughter has found another mom with a daughter my daugther's age and they are looking forward to meeting each other and forming a friendship. I have also contacted the Arlington chapter of Girl's Inc for some additional information about their programs. Thank you again to each one of you who took the time to respond to my request.

If there is a Girls Inc around you- they are great with girls. Depending on where you live, there is a Teen Center in Arlinton and a center in Dallas. You can get online to GirlsInc.org (I think) and search for locations. They do all sorts of activities, like learning to knit, going to sports games, having speakers, etc...

R.,

i have a 13 yo girl as well...she doesnt have that many friends to hang out with and do things with...if you think your daughter might like to meet her and see if a friendship could develop, let me know via email back...we live in the lake worth area...i know everyone else said church and girl scouts but when a child is very shy, sometimes one on one is better to help get them out of their shell...:)

Do you attend church? The youth group in church is a good place to start. I would also highly recommend Girl Scouts. My daughter is also an only child and does not really know how to break into a group but has found girl scouts in general are real accepting and inclusive instead of exclusive. We attend Midcities Bible church in Bedford for the AWANA program. We do not attend their church though. Actually we are looking for a church. If any of those ideas sound good to you or you need any additional help, please feel free to contact me and I will see what else I can help you with. My daughter is 14 and an only child also.

Good luck,

J.

I am not sure what area you are located in, but I live in the Arlington area. There is a program in Tarrant county called Girls Inc. The web site is www.girlsinctarrant.org I have had my daughter in this since she was in 5th grade, she really loves it and it has help bring her out of her shell. She is not in 9th grade. They help with homework, take them on field trips and is just very good. They just started a recruiting program yesterday for the girls, so it's funny to see this. If you are interested let me know and I will get you the information you need.

Calvary Church Youth Group called C5 in Irving, TX. They meet every Wed. nite @ 6:30-8:30. My children are very involved @ this Church. All children from PK-12 grade. Great Children's ministry.

I'm not sure exactly what you're looking for, but our church has an AWESOME youth group, and a lot of my 13/14 year old students attend. Wednesday nights are HUGE with the youth from 7 - 8:30 or so. They have music, games, food and a message. It's a smaller church, so she could actually get to know the people. It's in Keller right at Willis Lane and N Tarrant. It's called Milestone. Check it out at www.milestonechurch.com Good luck!

Do you go to church? It's a great place to meet other people, and she'll learn a lot of amazing things. Lakewood Baptist in Irving has an awesome group with a group of girls her age that are very friendly.
