Does anyone know of any places that have swimming lessons for babies and moms. I want to get my daughter used to the water as early as possible. I live in the Shaler Area. Thanks

What can I do next?

Kiwanis pool offers swim lessons for the summer, and the Shaler school district offers them during the school year. You should have received info about the Kiwanis lessons in your quarterly newsletter from Shaler. If not, you can stip by the township building (across from Jeffrey Elementary) and get the info that you need. You can find about the indoor lessons by going onto Shaler School districts website and clicking on Community.

Do you have a local YMCA? I would look into that!

Hi J.,

I used to take my son to the Sewickley YMCA. He loved it there. They have mom and baby classes. If there is a YMCA closer to you - they may also have classes.

YMCA has multiple programs around the city and suburbs Penn Hills offers swim lessons I think every six weeks. I have seen the baby classes while my other children were learning.

Hi J.! CCAC offers these classes. They are during the weekday though, so if you work outside the home, they might not work out for you.

When I looked online, the YMCA did have these classes too, but they looked really expensive - what I read seemed that you had to join the Y first, commit to a monthly fee, then you could pay extra for the swim class. If I misunderstood, someone please let me know!

I'm looking forward to following some of the other leads because I've been looking for these classes too - but I need evening or weekend classes!

When my son was 15 months we went to the Pittsburgh City pool's infant and tots swim classes (http://www.city.pittsburgh.pa.us/parks/html/swimming_pool...)
We did ours during the Winter on the Southside at the Oliver Bath house, but they have them over the summer too at the outdoor pools, you may need to check back closer to June for more details on the outdoor pool programs.
Also the JCC offers classes for infants too.

If the link doesn't work the program is listed as Water Babies.

We did the City Swim lessons at Oliver Bath house. It was a nice introduction to the basic principles of swimming. Do not expect your daughter to "swim" after taking these lessons.

We found a video at the library that we viewed and copied the techniques. "Diaper Dolphins", produced by Rob McKayand Linda Corley-Webb. Publisher Boca Raton, FL : Lifestyle Video Productions, c1993.

I highly recommend getting the video and doing it yourself. It was very rewarding, our son was swimming under water at 18 months and he learned from us.

I believe the Diaper Dolphin techniques are taught by the Squirrel Hill JCC's Water Babies class. Someone at our city pool told us, so I don't know for sure.

The Allegheny YMCA on West North Avenue in the northside. We have been taking both of our girls there since they were six months old. They are on Sat mornings an only 25 bucks for 8 weeks!
