Hi Ladies. I am becoming increasingly worried about "stanger danger". I have explained to my children the dangers out there, however, I think they need a video or book to help illustrate what I'm talking about. Anyone know of any good resources to use, ie, books, video's geared towards preschoolers about this subject?

So What Happened?

Thanks for all the great information! It's a great place for me start so I can feel like my children will be safe if I am not around (although at this point me or my husband are always around).

Our daughter knows "no strangers" so I agree with you - a very good lesson to teach from a young age. It is scary out there. I tried lots of things but the video that I liked the best and explained things the best, I thought, was "The Safe Side: Safe Side Superchick in Stranger Safety" by John Walsh and Julie Clark. They explain things so well on the video without scaring children in words and phrases they can understand in a fun way but still getting the point across. We still talk to this day about "don't know's, kind of know's, etc." which is language from the video and my daughter is six. We started when she was around three with her. My son loved it too and we have a three month old that I plan on using it with also when the time is right. They also have an internet safety video out there that we bought for when the kids start using the computer (ours have started) and that is excellent too. Hope that helps. I also did daycare from my home and we would all watch it together.

I absolutely hate to be the bearer of bad news, but most child molestations happen from someone the child knows. It is extremely important to teach stranger danger and I think that the videos by John Walsh are very good. However, please don't overlook the importance of teaching your child to listen to their instinct about people that they may trust and love. It is a complete different way of explaining it that I did not even think about until I had kids. Make sure that they know not to ever keep secrets from you and that other (even if trusted and/or loved) adults are not always right in their actions if it goes against what they think and what feels like the right thing to do. Sometimes "strangers" are the least of our worries. Pedifiles know how to get close to our precious children and can be teachers, friends parents, club leaders etc. Knowledge is power.

The one with the Bernstein Bears is good. I think it is called Learn about Strangers. My kids seem to get a good idea from it

During the summer most cities (at either a school or fire station) holds something called Safety Town that teaches them about all kinds of things! Its awesome! I was amazed at what my 5 yr old learned! Look into it for next year :)

I haven't gotten to that stage yet so I haven't got a "particular" recommendation... but I know I'd first go to the library and ask them. They have those resources, I would just watch them alone 1st before showing them to your kids since they are usually donated by parents.

The other reason I wanted to respond is because I find it interesting that we have similar stories. My son turned 3 yesterday, my daughter is 18 months and I have a son due March 8th. I've got married July 05! I'm also a sleep deprived SAHM to a my best friend! :)

Hi First I would recommend that you get your facts. Most child abductions or custody problems, not real strangers. The Berenstain Bears have a book called Learn About Strangers. I think it helps promote safety and caution while being friendly when parents around. It is important to not invoke unnecessary fear but give real strategies. B. in MI

Hi,
I DID NOT like the Berenstain Bears strangers book.

For young kids, I recommend "Once Upon A Dragon: Stranger Safety for Kids (And Dragons)" by Jean E. Pendziwol and the "Kid Guardians - Just Be Safe" series by Scholastic Books. There is one called "Stay Away From Strangers" (the "stranger" in this book is actually a well-dressed blonde woman!) and others such as "I Know Where I Live". The Kid Guardians are kind of corny, but my son absolutely loved this series of books when I bought them when he was 4 years old and he still wants us to read them now that he's 6.

There is a great one made by Julie Clark the woman who did the Einstein videos. The main character is super chick and my kids will watch it just for fun. You can probably find it on line.

There is a DVD called the safe side made by John Walsh & Julie Clark. It is wonderful. It teachers kids how to be safe without scaring them. It goes over when it's OK to talk to someone & when it's not OK. Here is the website.

I have found information at Polly Klass (website). At the time, she also offered a safety kit with ideas to keep your child safe.

Currently, we are gently discussing the idea with our son - who loves everyone, so as not to frighten him or giving him nightmares as he is sensitive enough to be effected adversely.
He is coming to realize if I am not comfortable with someone - or if we are not around to 'okay' him, that he should not talk to that person(s).
