Hi! We're expecting our second child in March, and I'm looking for a "refresher" class in the city for second time parents. I'm having a hard time finding one...any suggestions? Also, I'm considering using a doula this time, but I don't really know where to start to find one. Again, any suggestions would be much appreciated. Thanks!!

I don't know where you are located but Northwestern Memorial Hospital offers this type of class. Also, Be By Baby in Roscoe Village offers this type of class. You can google them and find their website - I believe they have their classes on there or simply call them.

Good luck and congrats

There is a Chicago Doula Group, you can go to www.birthlink.com to find some great info in the Chicagoland area. Also www.birthwithoutfear.com is a birthing class for first and second time parents. Be Bye Baby in Roscoe Village has classes for second time parents.

Congrats and Well Wishes,

Natalie Evans teaches a refresher class about both Be By Baby and Bloom Yoga - she is also a doula and would know other doulas. I myself used a doula through Birthways.

Check out Be By Baby at Roscoe and Lincoln (www.bebybaby.com). They offer classes, and might be a good source for finding a doula, too.

Congrats on your second pregnancy! I suggest talking to thw folks at Mother Me about childbirth classes - they offer several and can probably recommend a refresher class for you. As for a doula - this is a GREAT idea. Good labor support is really invaluable - especially if you're considering a natural birth. You can check www.dona.org and you might consider posting a message on the forums at Mothering.com (www.mothering.com/discussions --> go to "finding your tribe/tribal areas/ Illinois, Iowa, Wisconsin). It is often helpful to find a doula who has worked at a specific hospital where you will be giving birth, since she will have an idea of the "standard operating procedure" at that location.

Good luck with the birth!!

I don't know about refresher courses, but I found my doula by typing "chicago, doula" or something like that into Google. Many doulas have websites of their own which will pop up when you do this. Also, I highly recommend getting a doula! I had one at my first birth and she was great source of support for me and for my husband as well. I could pass on the name of my doula if you are interested.

Can't help you on doula. Refresher class though:

Advocate hospitals have lots of those. I went to Lutheran General Hospital which is right off of the expressway at Dempster just outside the city-- but any advocate hospital should have them. Google advocate classes. There are a million, and refresher classes are plentiful.

Congrats!

Northwestern has a "Great Expectations Refresher" course. You can find all their classes on their website - look under Prentice for this one.
Good luck!
