Seeking Recommendations for Non-toxic Cleaners for Wood Floors & Stone Counters

Hi all:

I'm preparing our home for the arrival of our baby girl and am seeking recommendations on non-toxic cleaners for wood floors and stone kitchen counters. Since I've been pregnant, I've noticed the strong chemical odor of most commercial cleaners for floors (like Murphy's oil or Swiffer products for wood floors) and would like to avoid exposing the baby to too many chemicals anyway. I'd love any suggestions for green products or even homemade solutions that will do the trick.

Thanks in advance!

Hi Kim,
Lots of good options out there; I would recommend the Shaklee products as well. It's a really effective cleaning product that is so safe you can both wash your produce and clean your floors with the same product. I'm a distributor in the San Diego area and would be happy to give you a sample to try if you'd like. My number is ###-###-####; website is www.shaklee.net/mclemore

I get all of my cleaning products from a place called Melaleuca. They have wonderful cleaners and the prices are the same or better than you would find at your store. You have to be a member to get the Preferred Price, but don't get caught in the "this is a great home business" trap. Our family loves all the Melaleuca products, especially their cleaners and vitamins. The bath & cosmetic products are wonderful, but on the more expensive side. You can become a member, order their products and then if you don't like them you can return them for a full refund (including the membership cost) within 30 days (it might be 90 days, I haven't returned anything for a long time). I remember that when I first switched there was an odd smell and my friend told me that it was the chemicals and buildup being cleaned off. I've never smelled anything else since. They have wonderful all purpose cleaners, wood cleaners, window cleaners, tub&tile cleaners that really work great in the bathroom, laundry detergent, and even a hospital-strength disinfectant.
If you want more information, I would be happy to tell you all about our experience with their products, or help you pick what products you need (the names don't necessarily explain what the product is and I was confused on my first orders). Just email if you decide to try and need any help. Their website is www.melaleuca.com or you can also find more information at www.saferforyourhome.com.
Good luck and I hope your new baby brings you all the joy in the world.

The Green Works from Clorox is great. I just started using it on my laminate floors. But you can also use vinegar and water, which works great. I also love the Clorox and Lysol wipes. I use them all over the kitchen, the baby's high chair, bathrooms... and they seem to make life a little easier.

Good Luck

Hi Kim,

If you are looking for the simplicity of the swiffer I'd recommend Method's omop? I'm not sure of the spelling, but we bought our starter kit at target. The "mop" has disposable cloths like the swiffer that can be composted, and a washable microfiber cloth that you use with the non-toxic cleaner. They offer a wood specific cleaner and an all-purpose cleaner for kitchen & bathroom floors.

We also use and love the Shaklee cleaners for all our other cleaning, however, I'm not sure which product would be best for stone counters.

Best wishes on your new arrival!

For stone counters you can use simple green... although it has a strong scent, it's non-toxic, and works great.
I invested in a 'Steam Mop' (by Bissell) and I Love It! It can be used on tile & wood floors, and uses absolutely NO chemical. It's worth looking into! Good Luck!

Do a web search- almost anything can be cleaned with either vinegar or baking soda- I know vinegar is safe to use on almost all surfaces, including stone and marble. I'm not sure about wood floors, though. I'm sure if you search you'll find something- on my wood furniture I just dry dust and occasionally I use plain mineral oil to condition it- and I'm sure it depends on the type/finish of the wood too. Also, go to the library and look for Martha Stewart's Housekeeping (or Homekeeping, can't remember) - it's a super fat book with a Blue Binding. She covers a lot of non-toxic cleaners (not exclusively, her aim is to start with the most basic, non toxic cleansers and only use the more powerful, toxic ones when absolutely necessary) and she covers lots of specific surfaces, both floor and counter, and how to care for them. But I clean everything in my house (occasionally I do use scrubbing bubbles in the tub, but only like twice a year) with either a 50/50 vinegar/water mix or a 30/70 vinegar water mix with a few drops of dish soap.

Hi! Kim,

There is a book (about 5 inches square) called "Clean, the zen art of cleaning". I am sorry that I can't give you the author. It gives you recipes for all types of cleaners using 4 or 5 non-toxic ingredients. I am not sure but I think they are salt, vingar, lemon juice, baking soda, and maybe borax. I have started using equal parts of borax, baking soda and Ivory soap flakes for laundry soap. You only need about 1 tablespoon per washer load. Also, instead of Spray and Wash, I have been using a bar soap called "Zote". I wet the stain and rub the bar of soap over the stain. If it is a really bad stain, then I put the item in a bucket of warm water and really put a lot of the soap so that the water is soapy and let it soak. This soap is available at most grocery stores and the 99cent store. I hope that this helps.

I have used Shaklee products. I buy them straight from the website and do not deal with the direct marketing. I saw it on Oprah during an earth day special when I was pregnant last year. There is no smell and the products last a long time. Their website is shaklee.com
Other brands are Method, which you can buy at Target and Seventh Generation (sometimes Target sells it or Mother's and Henry's). I hope this helps and best to you!

I love Babyganics Floor cleaner. Our entire house has dark wood floors and we used to use Murphy's Wood oil.. but, before getting pregnant, I wanted to switch and discovered this product. It comes fragrance free and, I think, lavender. Completely organic and does a better job than any other (organic, or non-organic product) I've ever used. I had terrible morning sickness and almost any scent made me sick (even the good ones!), so the fragrance free was great.

They also have other cleaners in their line - and all are great.

You can order some of the products on-line at diapers.com for really good prices, and bed bath and beyond also carries them.

All the best to you...

Hi Kim, I have hard wood floors in my dining area and living room and down the hall and I use a water and vinegar solution on the floors. I was told by the company that resurfaced the floors about 10 years ago now, that one part water to 1/2 part vinegar is the best way to keep the floors clean. I have my older kids (15 and 13) clean them with this and a rag, just spray it on and wipe it, and it picks up all the stuff on the floor, after sweeping of course and it makes the floors shine. I also have a 2 year old, and a 10 month old, and he is crawling/walking all over the floors. I use a generic brand of Clorox disenfectant wipes for the kitchen counters and the door knobs and the remotes. With the older kids coming home from school, who knows what they bring home, I always have them wash their hands, especially when the other 2 were newborns. Hope this helps a little bit. Just have everyone wash their hands before holding baby or at least have them use hand sanitizer. Good luck! M.

i regularly use Method products in my home. you can get them at Target. i also use a concentrated cleaner from Shaklee- you can go to their website and/or find a representative in your area. i bought the $12 concentrated organic cleaner a year ago and still have over 1/3 of the bottle left. i use it to clean everything. if you want to go super simple, white vinegar is a simple, inexpensive cleaner/disenfectant. i use it full strength in the bathroom and it's also good for wood floors (mixed with water). enjoy your pregnancy and new baby!

Hi Kim, this info is cut and pasted from an article i wrote recently about this. (I don't think the footnotes will come through, but I can send them to you separately if you want them) the Basic H2 product is organic, and cleans just about everything - but there are other cleaners in the kit that are good for a wide variety of surfaces. Good luck!

Pollutants, found in many common cleaners and even air fresheners, are 2 to 5 times higher inside your home than outside of it, according to the Environmental Protection Agency. And a person who spends 15 minutes cleaning scale off shower walls could inhale three times the "acute one-hour exposure limit" set by the California Office of Environmental Health Hazard Assessment for glycol ether-containing products.[13] All of these toxic exposures can eventually be measured in health-related expenses for humans and their planet.

Shaklee’s Basic H organic household cleaner, an Official Earth Day product, was America’s first, nontoxic, fully biodegradable household cleaner. The Shaklee Corporation has completely offset its CO2 emissions, resulting in a net zero impact on the environment, and was the first in the world to be certified as a climate neutral company by The Climate Neutral Network. In addition, the Shaklee Corporation partnered with 2004 Nobel Peace laureate Dr. Wangari Maathai, in planting over 320,000 trees, to date.

In 2007, the Shaklee Corporation added another "first" to its list of environmental achievements, when it became the first consumer products company to offset 100 percent of its U.S. CO2 emissions, through the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA’s) Climate Leaders program. Shaklee buys 100 percent green or renewable power to meet its purchased electricity needs.

Bill Wehrum, acting assistant administrator for EPA’s office of Air and Radiation said, “EPA applauds Shaklee for its environmental efforts through our Climate Leaders and Green Power Partnership programs. By committing to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and purchase renewable energy, they are leading by example.”[14]

I like a company like that, and Oprah does, too. She recommends their ecologically sound Get Clean Kit of household cleaners,[15] which she has featured five times on her show. Shaklee products have also been featured in Time Magazine,[16] Woman’s Day,[17] O at Home, [18] Better Homes and Gardens, [19] Family Circle,[20] Natural Health,[21] and others.

I figured that Oprah and all those magazines couldn’t be wrong, so I got myself a Get Clean Kit to try for about $150.[22] The Shaklee Corporation says this kit takes the place of over $3,400[23] worth of the ready-to-use, supermarket variety cleaners we are all familiar with! That’s not a typo. Three thousand, four hundred dollars. Wow! This is partly due to the fact that, when buying ready-to-use, supermarket cleaners, consumers are paying for the high content of water in the product to be both packaged and shipped.

Replacing the standard household fare with the Get Clean Kit of highly concentrated products keeps 108 pounds of packaging waste from entering the landfill, and it also eliminates 248 pounds of greenhouse gas emissions. What a win-win solution: easy on the pocketbook, effective products (lots of national brands are out-cleaned by Get Clean Products),[24] and what a gift for the planet. And the products actually work: I was even successful with using the Basic H2 product to remove an old bloodstain from fabric!

Shaklee products are not available in stores, only from independent Shaklee dealers. I live in LA, so I got my Get Clean Kit from the Shaklee Products Store at 3701 Cahuenga Boulevard in Studio City, CA. They ship anywhere. Toll free: 1-800-530-3305. Locally, call ###-###-####. Or email: [email protected]____.com You can purchase products at retail prices, or sign up to get member prices.

Murphy's is a good soap. Also the most cost efficient and body friendly cleaner is vinegar. Its smell doesnt lingar as much as people might think. But I sprinkle baking soda on showers, kitchen counters and sinks, then spray a 50/50 mixture of water and vinegar on it and it will bubble like "scrubbing bubbles". Then wipe down. No eco or bodily harm and a natrual disinfectant. There is a book to 1001 uses for vinegar. Almost all cleaning possible in one bottle. My mother in law adds a few drops of lemon oil or lavendar oil to the 50/50 mix to cut the smell some.

I highly recommend Neways' Radicate! It's amazingly safe and yet has anti-bacterial abilities. It comes in a concentrate. It kills odors too! Great for cutting boards and getting pesticides/herbicides off fruit & vegies. For the wood floor you can clean with this or Neways' All Purpose Cleaner. Depending on the type of stone you have you may want to test the pourous nature of it on an inconspicuous spot first. Money back guarantee on the products. Hi Kim,

I too experienced sensitivity to normal household cleansers during pregnancy. I had no idea how bad all the products I was using were for me, not to mention my little one. I switched to all non-toxic cleansers and beauty products as soon as I read this book, Green Clean by Linda Mason Hunter and Mikki Halpin. It has a wonderful website; http://www.greencleanbook.com/. It has excellent resources and info. My favorite products are from Trader Joe's and Mrs. Meyers Clean Day. Mrs. Meyers products smell amazing. They're a bit more expensive, but definitely worth it. The website is: http://www.mrsmeyers.com/. I also keep baking soda, vinegar and lemons on hand for a million different uses.

I hope that helps you out. It was a life changing thing making the switch. If feels so much better cleaning now.

Congratulations on your first pregnancy!!! Good luck on your labor and delivery.

Sincerely,
R.

Hi Kim - Shaklee has been making nontoxic cleaners since 1960 - long before being green was smart and hip! Their Basic H2 is great on floors and counters and it will save you tons of money because instead of selling you water, you put a few drops in a spray bottle (Shaklee has really pretty ones) with your own water. Let me know if you want more info.

The best wood floor cleaner on the market is Bona X from Sweden. You can find it at Bed Bath Beyond..or online. It is water based. Also..you can use just a dust mop for wood floors and then just clean them with Bona X as needed. For Stone counters...I use water and mild soap mostly and then Granite Gold when needed.

I also use Method cleaning products. They make a granite cleaner that works great and they also have a "naked" all-purpose cleaning spray with zero smell. I'm a big fan of their stuff. Also, for laundry I recommend Trader's Joe liquid laundry detergent. My daughter has very sensitive skin and I've been using TJ's for years. Congrats on your new baby — enjoy!
