Seeking Reassurement on Early Pregnancy

My husband and I have been trying to have a second baby for about 4 months now. For the heck of it, I took a test the other day and I got a very faint positive. So I went to the doctor and they confirmed that I was pregnant with a blood test. Now, they want to continue to test me to make sure my levels are rising properly??? I am kind of scared. I am only about 4 weeks, so the doc keeps on saying "this is an early pregnancy, so...". I don't understand why all of the testing just because I found out early. Is it because bad things are more likely to happen early on, and if so, what could they do if something in my levels was not normal? Anyone ever have this situation? My first one was easy at the beginning because he was a surprise and I didn't know for almost the first 2 months! Thanks for any shared experiences!

What can I do next?

What levels are they testing you for?
Or do they just want to give you multiple pregnancy tests?
I knew in my second week of pregnancy and the doctors office only gave me the initial test.

I too am in the early stages of pregnancey - about 5 weeks and my doctor did the blood work at 3 weeks after conception (5 weeks on the pregnancy chart) and they have requested that I take another blood test next week before actually coming into the office to see the doctor. They said the levels of the hormone hCG have to increase before seeing the doctor - so I think that this is just normal. There's not much for them to do that early on (is what they told me - I will go after my next blood test next week when about 7 weeks). Hope this helps ease your mind.

T.,

My first pregnancy I tested early too. (I'm actually waiting to Friday to see if I'm pregnant with our second!) The reason they want to re-test you is that some pregancy's end after 5-6 weeks and most women would never know. You can technically even miscarry before your period is due. They probably just want to test you again in a week or two to make sure everything is okay. However, it does seem a little odd to me that they want to do this-- confront you doctor and ask for an explanation. Remember-- you are the customer and don't leave or get off the phone until you understand what/why they are doing and are satisfied with the response.

hi there! I also had to have my levels drawn every other day until they reached a certain number (I think it was for 3 weeks). I had two miscarriages, so they were watching my levels closely. My pregnancy test for my third pregnancy (of which I now have a beautiful 17 month old son) was also a very faint line. I think when I had my levels drawn the next day (so I was like maybe a day late for my period) my levels were 18. But over the next 3 weeks, they were well over 3,000. I know it is awful to worry. You were blessed the first time around to be so worry free, but I am sure that things will go right for you. The doctors are just watching you closely. I guess my best advice is to rest easy, you are in good hands, and the big man above will keep you and your family safe. Best of luck to you...A.

Hi T.,

I know about the levels and testing first hand. I went through 6 years of infertility before I had my son and 4 months with my now 4 month old daughter.

The reason they check your levels is every day your levels are suppose to jump so much. And many times you can get pg and then all of a sudden you can take another test and you get a negative. Something went wrong the pregnancy doesn't continue. This happaned the 3rd month we were trying with my daughter. Got a positive and then I had a bad feeling and I took another test a week later and it came back negative.

Now the good thing is, they are keeping track of your levels, should for some reason they start to drop or don't go up like they are suppose to, there are medications they can give you to help support your pregnancy. So you may think they are being extra cautious, but maybe when they did the pg test and considering that your 4 weeks, maybe your numbers are not where they are suppose to be or are on the low side, so they are airing on caution. It seems like you have good doctors.

Congratulations and Good Luck with #2!!!

I wouldn't worry, just because the line was faint on the stick. That happened to me with my first pregnance, couldn't even barely see the 2nd line, but 2 years later, my son is beautiful and healthy. Good luck on the new baby, and just enjoy being pregnant, it goes by to fast to be negative.

Hi T..
I was so impatient when I was trying to conceive my first baby I got tested early and my blood test came back BORDERLINE! I had to laugh- how can you be borderline pregnant? The doc said that early your levels are still so low but they increase rapidly so they had me test again in a few days just to confirm the results. Try to not worry-You may have been

borderline like me and they just want to confirm. Good Luck.

I wouldn't worry about it. I had to have the same thing done when I was pregnant. I actually found out at an annual exam that I was pregnant. They tested me a couple of times to make sure my levels were good and now I have a 2 year old boy to show for the results of all of the testing.

With my son, I had to go in every other day early in my pregnancy for bloodwork to make sure my hormone levels were rising correctly. I had found out very early when I was pregnant with him. The concerns they had with me was from complications with my first pregnancy that ended after about 16 weeks. He was born absolutely perfect, the monitoring was actually reassuring that my body was doing what it was supposed to. Maybe they are watching since your first son was born so recently, and they just want to make sure your hormones are where they are supposed to be. I would not worry about it. Congrats on your pregnancy.

Im sorry, but a Dr is suppose to be optomistic what happent with been positive? as far as I know once the blood test reveals that yes you are pregnant there is no more on going pregnancy test; from there is the other millions of test you have to go through witch is regular protocall. (this is the early stages of the prenancy) should have been the right thing to say. Question do you know ths Dr.?

Don't fret I had the same exact thing. I had a miscarriage over Christmas 2002. I got pregnant February 2003. I went to my doctor regarding the miscarriage, he was keeping a close eye on my recovery and he said "how are you doing?" I said "I think I'm pregnant." He took a look, said I didn't look pregnant took a feel and I felt pregnant. I think I was only 10 days pregnant. Had to have the test 3 times to make sure that my levels were rising. No biggie. As long as they keep going up you are fine.

I found out when I was only 2 1/2 weeks pregnant with my son! Some OBGYN's won't even see pregnant women until they are over 6 weeks along because of the high rate of miscarriage before 6 weeks. They just prescribe prenatal vitamins until you hit 6 weeks. Anyways my Dr tested me also and it was a good thing because my Progesterone level was very low and I had to do suppositories (gross) twice a day for 3 months to keep it up.
I now have a strong healthy 21 month old son so it was worth it:)

I agree with the other response they just want to make sure the pregnancy progresses. I had high risk pregnancies due to 2 misscarriages and a stillborn child. So my last pregnancy I even went in for a ultrasound to be sure everything is ok.

If your first pregnancy was fine and it is so early I would not worry about it. Yes you are the customer and they are there to help you with any questions you may have. When I was pregnant my motto was " When in doubt call" .

It will be fine don't worry before you know it your levels will be up and you will be on your way to another baby.

Congratulations!!!!
