Hello , I am looking for a psychiatrist for my son who has a lot of anxiety, is obsesive and might possibly have Aspergers, but we are not quite sure- we are in the process of having him evaluated. He is very high functioning, but has so much anxiety that might need some medication. He argues a lot, is extremely smart, and really is very sweet but needs some extra help.
Our current therapist gave us a list of psychiatrists, however I have hit some dead ends...some are not taking new patients, some numbers are non working, etc. I need someone who sees children with these types of disorders, the therapist we see now is non specific to these things, but does see children with the same diagnosis, as well as adults. We just need more at this point.Any suggestions for psychiatrsits/ Who is good and who is rude? Thank you.

What can I do next?

Hello A.,

Please try Washington University Psychiatric center. They will be able to refer you to someone who can help you. They have a center on South Kingshighway in St. Louis that is just down the street from Childrens Hospital.

I'd like to encourage you to attend a lecture on nutrition on children's brain development by Jean Deasy at The Lodge of Des Peres on Thursday, March 5 at 7:00. It is at 270 and Manchester. Jean is a parent mentor for the state of Missouri and will be speaking about her journey with her child. She is a wealth of info and is willing to share many resources. Ask for L. S. It's free and everyone is invited.

Dr. Mantovani at St. Johns is a great kid psych. Also Dr. Simons at Forest Park Pediatrics. They're the two go-to guys in STL.

Saw Simons first, who gave us the original diagnosis. We did a second consult with Dr. Mantovani to confirm and to round out testing.

(this is info from a good friend of mine who's son has been diagnosed with Aspergers)
Good Luck.

I am still laughing at the comment about Dr. Elly Bhuyan. I am surprised she is still practicing. She is the reason my older two went off meds. They couldn't stand her, I couldn't stand her. My daughter who is now 18 has always been a straight A student. At her first and last visit with this doctor the doctor wanted to increase her meds. I asked why and the doctor said well she is on a very low dose. I pointed out she is well behaved and gets all As so what improvement do you hope to get by increasing her meds. She said well it is just not enough. Great doctor there.

Ok just read the comment about DePaul, it is bad, very bad. My son who has PDD,ADD and I few other letters was admitted there. It was awful, the doctor in charge thought he was god or something. The meds he put him on only sedated Andy so in the end when he went back to school he couldn't learn.

Andy has a great doctor I just don't think he is taking patients.

Hi! Have you tried St. John's, they have a psychiatry deartment called Edgewood. There is also Centerpointe Hospital (I think it is located in Wentzville)they may have psychiatrists who have a private practice located closer to you. I also think that Depaul may serve children. Most Psychiatrists who go to these hospitals have private practices. Another option is to call your insurance company for a list of doctors. Hope this helps.

I highly recommend Dr. Michael Banton. He is out on Manchester in Des Peres, and my boys adore him. He is very easy to talk to. I DO NOT recommend Dr. Elly Bhuyan. She is very abrasive, does not communicate well with the child or the adult, and if she diagrees with the parent questioning any of her treatment of the child, will actually yell at the parent in front of the child. (Personal experience, and have also heard this from a couple of psychologists.) Good luck. Most child psychiatrists for treating Asberger's or any other similar disorder are out in West County, so be prepared for a drive.

He has really helped us out alot! He has a rather Dry type of humor but after meeting with him a few times, i began to understand him more and now i really love him!! Your son sounds alot like mine! If he's not taking new patients, then someone in his office should be. Good luck in your search! I know how you feel, I've been the same boat your in now. Just remember that you will get through this.

Good luck again!!

Ok, i just saw someone else mention Dr. Montivonti's name also. I know his practice also because my son also see's his partner Dr. Dennis Altman. I know Altman is AWESOME!! He a Neurologist and we see him for my son's tick's (a form of tourettes). He's awesome too!! Their scheduling is weird. They usually only schedule out like two days in advance. You can't call now and make an appt for say a week or two from now. That i thought was strange, but when i talked to the girls at the front desk, they said it's worked out much better since they changed that. Alot less No shows at the last minute. Anyway, just thought i'd throw that two cents in too!!
