We are looking for an AWESOME private swim teacher for our (almost) 7 year old son. He has had lessons before (in group settings) but still is not a good swimmer. We do NOT have our own pool so will need someone that gives lessons at their own home. If you know of someone that is fantastic but we need to provide the pool, we do have a few neighbors with pools that we could possibly use. We live in east Dallas...near White Rock Lake and would prefer not to have to drive too far. I appreciate your help!!

THE Best Best Best private swim teacher ever is Lis Congdon--her number is ###-###-####. She has a pool and is very affordable and has been teaching most of her life. She is a homeschool mom and taught my kids to swim and I believe she teaches all levels. She really puts children at their complete ease and challenges them too. Call her (she's in Plano) and tell her you got her number from me so she doesn't think you're a stranger!

The Tom Landry Fitness Center at Baylor (just off Gaston @ Washington) has a fantastic kids swim program, both private and group lessons, that does not require the parents be members of the gym. My daughters (ages 3 & 6) have both done the "Fish Factory Swim School" group lessons and my older one has done private lessons as well. For private lessons, you can contact instructor Jennifer Hughes at ____@____.com - she can get you info on the groups lessons as well, which start up again in April. Good luck!

Sandy Travis is awesome. I babysat a 4yr old who was deathly afraid of the water and he was swimmimg across the pool in 4 days, and hasn't stopped since. He loves the pool now! She is in Mesquite but would be well worth the short drive. There is alot of shopping near her house you can do during the lessons. Better yet take a book and relax. Us moms never get enough of that.
Best of luck.

Hi A.,
I have taught swim lessons at my home in North Garland for nine years. I started teaching when my own kids were 2 and 5, so I developed my program with little kids in mind. I'm not sure if I'm too far for you. I'm at Shiloh and Arapaho. I also have a girl that works for me that goes to homes to teach, but I market this to the park cities because I don't want her to have to spend a lot of time driving from home to home. If you have someone in your neighborhood that would be willing to let you use their pool for back to back lessons I could possibly arrange for her to do it. It is more expensive to have her come and teach than it is for you to bring your kids to my house for lessons. Call me @ ###-###-####. Thanks, L.

I love using Aquamobile for private lessons for my kids. My 7 year old was so scared of the water at first. After the private lessons, he’s zipping around the water so much and he can’t get enough of it. Private swim lessons with Aquamobile is AMAZING and very very affordable! The instructors are excellent!

I have a son the same age and am looking for the same thing you are! I've found out that the YMCA will do them privately. I called the Lake Highlands one (that's where we live) and was told that for members, they are 4 lessons for $100 or 8 lessons for $190.

My friend had private lessons for her 3 yr old at the Carrollton rec center pool on Frankford. We are considering the same thing for our daughter. She said they were pricey but so helpful for her son who had a great fear of the water. My daughter is not afraid and that scares me more until she learns how to swim! Good luck! I'd love the hook up if you find an at-home lesson.

Hi-

I'm a certified ISR instructor. We specialize in teaching children as young as 6mos old how to survive in water unattended. My son who is now 18 mos old went through the program last summer and learned the survival float. He will start up again to learn the swim-float-swim-sequence. I have trained children who have attended Emler Swim School for over 3yrs and are still not safe in the water if they were ever caught in a situation alone. Well after going through the program they can swim the length of the pool safely and are trained to roll over on their back and float to rest and breathe until they are ready to continue swimming. We don't focus on just swimming but also survival as well.

I actually train in The Colony and S. Arlington/Grand Prairie area but we do have other instructors in your area. you can go to www.infantswim.com to find an instructor nearest you. I highly recommend this program both as a mom and an instructor. We focus on safety and the well-being of the child at all times. Usually by the time we have a 20 mos old go through the program they are little fish and love to swim. The great thing is they are also safe about it and know how to rest when they need to.

Here is some brief information about the program. All lessons are one-on-one. I recommend going online and reviewing the "Miles" video on ISR's main website.

Survival Float
Babies 6 to 12 months old are very active and surprisingly quick! The Rollback-to-Float program introduces the correct floating posture for survival as well as the skills necessary to maneuver into a float. Babies learn quickly from their physical environment. This is how they learn to crawl and walk. But water is an unforgiving environment. For this reason aquatic survival skills for the infant and toddler must be taught by a certified ISR instructor. These skills will be practiced for complete mastery even while fully clothed with diaper and shoes. All lessons are taught one-on-one for a period of 10 minutes daily, Monday-Friday. Approximate class length: 3-4 weeks.

SWIM-FLOAT-SWIM Ages 13 months to 6 years
The Swim-Float-Swim program encompasses the skills necessary for a child to reach the steps, edge of the pool or shore. This includes swimming and floating. This process begins with teaching the child breath control and the skills to turn around in the water to grab the edge. As the child becomes capable of longer swims the rollback-to-float is taught so the child can rest and breathe, and then continue swimming. This sequence can be repeated indefinitely until the child reaches safety. These skills will be practiced for complete mastery even while fully clothed with shoes and diaper for those not toilet trained. All lessons are taught one-on-one for a period of 10 minutes daily, Monday-Friday. Approximate class length: 5-6 weeks.

Take care!

I don't know an individual but I can recommend you check out your local rec center program. I know that Carrollton Rec Center (Rosemeade) offers private lessons in Summer, starting around late May, I believe. They have private and my son has had excellent swim instructors over the summer time in the past. They are red cross trained and usually college and highschool swim instructors that all have swimming backgrounds. I plan on doing lessons there again this summer for my 7 year old. He got really good last summer and but it never hurts to brush up and build upon what they have. They start lessons at level you are.

Another suggestion would be to check the local school district's natatorium. Often they offer swim lessons for the public.
