In my opinion I think you shouldnt use any hair color while pregnant. Drs say there are no effects but you dont really know or may not know for many year if there was a negative effect. I wouldn't mess with my growing baby if I were you.

Using any strong chemical can harm you and your child. The skin is a huge sponge, and things soak right through into your bloodstream (or breast milk). And if it has a smell, like ammonia, you can also absorb it into your lungs, where it also goes right into your blood.

The damage chemicals do may not show up right away. I was exposed to lots of chemicals for years at my work, and thought I was fine. But one day I "crashed." I felt like I was going to die, and it took two years of very carefully finding out what the problem was. Now I have to stay away from all chemicals, or I feel truly sick. Even perfume.

You betcha it could be. And for you, too. Those of us in the alternative medicine community are aware of concerns about increased risks of cancer, especially ovarian, later in life when too much hair dye is used. If you're serious about your own health and your baby's, and you must color your hair, please switch to one of the several low-ammonia and natural products available at places like Whole Foods. Much better for both of you!

i was under the impression that you should not place any hair dye on your scalp while pregnant. instead it is recommended that you have your hair highlighted since the dye is put in foils and not on your scalp. but you still will inhale the fumes. not sure if you are trying to cover grey, if so it might be tricky to cover them all. you might want to try a natural product that you can purchase at a health food store.
good luck!

Hi, Not at all. it's an old wives tail. I was worried about the same thing because that's all you hear so last year when i was pregnant with my last child I asked my doctor the same thing and she laughed at me saying there is nothing wrong with it, it may make you a little sick because of the smell but that's all. so dye away! :)

The standard advise is all over color is a no no but highlights or foils are ok because they don't touch the scalp.

It is recommended that you don't dye your hair while pregnant. It's just better to be safe than sorry.

I dyed my hair with my first pregnancy and I dye my hair with this one too. My dr said that it's not recommended, but if I wanted to do it then to use dye with NO ammonia in it. It is less harmful

I'm not sure if it does or not. My sister who is a hair dresser said I would be fine, but I just stopped coloring my hair for the entire pregnancy. I just wanted to be safe, it was my first baby.

They usually recommend not dying your hair while pregnant because all the hormones can give you funny results, nevermind all the chemicals in it.

Both my doctor and a guy that works at the local hair salon told me that dying my hair while pregnant was fine. They both told me that it didn't soak through my skin and that I just had to do it in a well ventilated area so that I wouldn't breathe in all the chemicals.

However, I did not ask specifically about hair dyes that contain ammonia... So I'm not sure if that changes the answer.

Also, with all the hormones running through my body the hair dye just washed right out so it was pointless... Then I did it a few months later and it worked... So I guess it's all luck.
