I am 8 months pregnant with my first child. I have been having a difficult time finding a pediatrician. None of my friends have children and so I have no one that I can think of to recommend one to me. I am looking for a pediatrician who is sympathetic and has a good bed side manner. I would like this Dr. to be affiliated with Saint Alexius hospital in Hoffman Estates. My one concern is I have MS and will be unable to breastfeed as my nuorologist wants me back on my medication right away and breastfeeding is not recommended. I need a pediatrician who will be symapathtic to this situation. I feel horrible that I will not be able to breastfeed and I have heard that some Dr's can be a little pushy on the subject. Does anybod have a good pediatrician they can recommend to me?

What can I do next?

Dr. Peters in Arlington Heights. I had all the same concerns about breastfeeding--he didn't pressure at all. I had concerns about delaying some of my son's vaccines, and he was fine with my decision and didn't make me feel bad. At my son's 1-month visit, he asked how *I* was doing. He doesn't just go into medicine...he really understands child development, speech, potty training, sleep habits, etc...and takes his time answering every question on your list without making you feel rushed. I LOVE HIM!!!!! It may be a little bit of a hike for you if you're in streamwood, but I think he's well worth it....and the nurses are so nice and helpful no matter how stupid of a question you may call about....

###-###-#### I think the address is 1340 Arlington Heights Rd. Good luck. I highly recommend Dr. Peters and the office in general.

P.S. Don't feel bad about not breastfeeding!!!!!! You baby will be fine. Your health is important too!!!

Hi R.,

I asked my Gynie for a recommendation and she recommended her pediatrician, Dr. Marc Nudelman. My daughter loves him! He has flexible scheduling, doesn't mind middle of the night calls, and does encourage breastfeeding, but is just as wonderful if you don't or can't breastfeed. He is affiliated with Alexian Brothers in Elk Grove Village which is where I delivered. I am not sure if he is affiliated with your hosp. But you could just call and ask.

This link will give you a lot of background info on Dr. Nudelman.
I also love that I never have a long wait in his office and his reception staff will help to keep my daughter entertained if need be.
Good Luck!

I agree with Courtney that you should talk to someone who knows about breastfeeding, cause most doctors tell you you can't...just in case......without really knowing anything about it's compatibility with breastfeeding. A great site to look things up is www.kellymom.com

My old babysitter lives in Schaumburg and at one time I was having trouble finding a new pediatrician because the one I had wasn't being very supportive of my decisions. She reccommended Dr. Silver.....said she took her kids there and now her granddaughter goes there. The office I think is on Golf or Higgins and I would expect that they would be affiliated with St. Alexius.

I looked her up on the internet and found this page with the address

http://www.healthgrades.com/directory_search/physician/pr...

I now go to Homefirst as well. But if you do end up not being able to breastfeed, I am not sure if you want to go there...they stress very much the importance of breastfeeding. But they are also great drs. and try the natural approach before just throwing a drug at everything.

Hi R. - We go to Dr. Salma Khokha in Elk Grove Village. She's by far the most amazing doctor I've ever experienced. I've written a review for her on this board that goes into detail of how wonderful she is. I'm not sure she's affiliated with the hospital you're asking about but I do know that if you're looking for this b/c you're delivering there - I know most docs will travel to whatever hospital once the baby is born for you.

Good luck and congrats!

Hi,
We go to Drs. Rosewell, Silver, Beddinfield & Norbash. I usually see Dr. Rosewell. Like all but Beddinfield, he's not bad but just too laid back for me. The are located at Higgins and Barrington and affilated with St. Alexias. I have 4 kids and didn't breastfeed any of them. They were great with that, no pressure. This was one of my deciding issues when we interviewed drs. Many of them were very pro-breastfeeding and too presuring to do so. Dr. Silver is exceptional with kids and really takes time with them, she lets them hold/touch the equipment so they aren't afraid of it. Their phone # ###-###-####. I also believe they have a couple evening hours and Saturday mornings.

Hello,

We see the doctors at Homefirst (www.homefirst.com). we are very happy with them- completely nonjudgemental. Very open to discussion and input from parents and always take the time to talk/answer questions.

As far as breastfeeding and your MS meds, I don't think you said which med you take, but I would encourage you to get a second opinion if you really want to breastfeed. There is a lot of misinformation about meds and breasfeeding out there, partly due to the FDA's drug rating system.

Dr Thomas Hale is considered a leading authority on drug safety during breastfeeding. He wrote the book "Breastfeeding and Mother's Milk." His website http://neonatal.ama.ttuhsc.edu/cgi-bin/discus/discus.cgi?... has forums where he answers questions about drugs and lactation. You could also consult a lactation consultant. Many drugs considered unsafe during pregnancy are safe during lactation because such small amounts actually get to baby. You could also look on the La Leche League website (www.laleche.org).

There is some evidence that breastfeeding reduces the chances of autoimmune disease later in life, so if you are able to that would be great for your baby.

Good luck to you!

I thought after reading another response I should add that I go to Homefirst and was not able to breastfeed either (for other reasons). They are totally non-judgemental and supportive.

Hi R. M,
I sought the advice of friends when I needed to source a pediatrician, and more than one recommended Dr. David Nadelman at Associates in Pediatrics in Streamwood, so we tried him. We have been happy with our selection. He is reasonably flexible in scheduling and our little girl seems to like him too. We've had similar experiences with some of the other docs in his group - but our primary pediatrician is Dr. "David". His office is at 1020 Schaumburg Road (just west of Barrington Rd) - ###-###-####. He does encourage breast-feeding, and I was lucky to do so until our little girl turned 10 months, but I'm sure he'd be understanding and considerate of your situation. We were able to meet with him before we had our baby to kind of interview him for the job. I'm sure he'll be happy to meet with you so you can talk to him too. I'm not sure if he's affiliated with St. Alexius (we delivered at Alexian Bros - and since he wasn't affiliated there, he recommended a colleague to tend to our baby in the hospital). Good Luck!

Hello- I am a registered nurse so I am familiar with your situation. I have switched pediatric groups twice and am very happy with my son's current pediatrician. My son has some digestive isssues and Dr. Erik Johnson was very thorough and proactive. Dr. Johnson does go to St. Alexius and his office is located right next to the hospital on Moon Lake Blvd. His office phone # is ###-###-####. This office has only 2 male physicians (Dr. J and a Doctor of Osteopathy- Dr. Colin). Not so hip on Dr. colin. Dr. Johnson has other offices with more partners but Hoffman Estates is a good location for us. Good luck.
