Seeking Others Input on Baby with Roseola

I think it's probably normal...My neice broke out in the rash yesterday and has been irritable, refusing food or milk (will drink gatorade) and just in general not herself. From what I read on the internet, that seems to be the norm from other parents too and after the rash starts to fade they generally start acting and feeling better. By last evening my neice was eating again, but still very thirsty and refusing milk.

My 11 month old boy had roseola last month and he was extremely fussy. It started out with the fever for about 4 days, then the rash started. I took him to the doctor before the rash and they also said he had an ear infection and started some antibotics. He wouldn't eat at all for almost a whole week and nothing seemed to soothe him. We gave him Motrin and 2 hours latter some Tynelol thats what his doctor told us to do. It lasted about a whole week!

I am so sorry that you and your baby are going through this. My baby had this a while back. I used the benadryl and ibuprofen every 4-6 hours. The benadryl was for the itching and overall discomfort (as is the ibuprofen). It took about 2-3 days for the rash to start to go away. When it did she began to act like herself again. Try to get him to drink as much fluids as possible. I know sometimes this is a challenge. Even if it is ice chips or gatorade. I hope this helps.

My 21 month old had roseola a few weeks ago. He wasn't very interested in eating either, but we could get him to eat gogurt and applsauce. My son's tongue was broken out as well which is why he didn't want to eat. Our doc said the rash didn't bother him at all, but it sure looks horrible. I've heard that benadryl can give kids hallucinations(sp chk) so we try not to give it to him. The rash only lasted 2 days and it was completely gone. Be sure to keep him out of the sun too, that makes it worse. I hope that helps! Don't worry, it will go away soon!

My 3 yr old just had it (her rash went away a couple of days ago). She was irritable and not at all hungry. Her appetite is coming back slowly but she just told her Daddy who was getting juice for her that she couldn't have this "Lellow Straw with my juice b/c it doesn't Match"... :-P
In short-I've no idea how long the symptoms last but I understand.
We are right there with you. Our girl is usually pretty happy so we are ready like you-to get our baby well.

Wow I bet that freaked you out?! I sure did cuz fever got real high then boom gone as fast as came and then boom awful rash. Poor babe! Ok what worked for my baby boy was bathing him in tub filled 1/4 full with half box of small box of baking soda. On the real bad days I used Aveano's Oatmeal bath. NO SOAP NOT EVEN BABY SOAP. See if Dr with give oxycodone for a cpl of days. Instead of giving every 6hr as may prescribe, give when appears uncomfortable. Mine seemed to only need when waking up. I don't believe in Tylenol...it doesn't work for me and my family... We are aleve ppl and we take hydro or oxycodone for severe pains like ear infection. I just happenes to have some of the baby's left over from prior infection and used it.

By the way the baths I suggested work real well when the eczema needs some soothing or its bathtime and the raches seem bothersome

I don't know much about Roseola, but, any meds that he is put on can cause side effects that would be serious enough to make him extremely irritable. Let's say for instance, that one of the antibiotics is causing extremem stomach pain but he can't explain that to you......, or what if Benadryl just doesn't work with his system and also makes him feel horrible. Either way, I would return to , or try some old fashioned rememdies... make sure it isn't gas... you could do this by giving him the infant gas medicine, or you could try an ancient remedy of catnip tea. All you do is steep organic catnip tea from a whole foods market, or health food store, 1 tsp. in 1 cup of boiling water for 30-45 minutes. Then give 2-3 teaspoons to your child. This is an ancient Native American remedy for stomach problems. In addition to this you could give some simple gripe water. It's safe and it won't hurt him.... the tylenol should help with the teething. But, if it were my baby, i would run down to the local health food store, or stores and start talking to people who really care for babies... he could be having a food allergy to something you recently introduced to him, or to something you are feeding too much of to him. There are food allergy tests for infants that can be run, you just have to be persistent with your pediatrician or find one that will listen to you. Your son is sufferring way too much just to have some stupid doctor tell you to just give him Benadryl. Research on the internet as well for natural cures for Roseola. Don't be afraid to try something natural... it could be what helps your son out for the rest of his life.

We had roseola about 5 days after hand foot and mouth so it was a nightmare. She sudddenly started running a really high fever and then suddenly was completely covered with that red rash from head to toe. She was irritable but didn't seem completely miserable. Mostly when the fever was high she just kind of laid around. Maybe it was better compared to the hand foot and mouth where she really had been screaning and misearble. It only lasted a few days and then she was better. Maybe the teeth on top of it all is just making things worse but if you are really not sure, go back to the pediatrician and show him the rash. That's what they are there for and I think they expect parents to call a lot when their kids are sick so don't be shy. Good luck.

If it is Roseola, all the child's symptoms should disappear before the rash shows up, at the point there is a rash, the baby should be acting normally, not sick. They are not contagous at the point of the rash either. I would think if he is still running fever and is irritable it might be a reaction to the antibiotics, symptoms of the ear infection, or something else going on. I would take him back to the Dr if he is still exhibiting symptoms. Was he checked for strep? Strep can cause a rash and also makes the patient irritable and can be extremely painful.

If your child is exposed to someone with roseola and becomes infected with the virus, it generally takes a week or two for signs and symptoms of infection to appear — if they appear at all. It's possible to become infected with roseola, but have signs and symptoms too mild to be readily noticeable. Roseola symptoms may include:

* Fever. Roseola typically starts with a sudden, high fever — often greater than 103 F (39.4 C). Some children may also have a slightly sore throat, runny nose or cough along with or preceding the fever. Your child may also develop swollen glands in his or her neck along with the fever. The fever lasts for three to seven days.
* Rash. Once the fever subsides, a rash typically appears — but not always. The rash consists of many small pink spots or patches. These spots are generally flat, but some may be raised. There may be a white ring around some of the spots. The rash usually starts on the chest, back and abdomen and then spreads to the neck and arms. It may or may not reach the legs and face. The rash, which isn't itchy or uncomfortable, can last from several hours to several days before fading.

Other signs and symptoms of roseola may include:

* Fatigue
* Irritability in infants and children
* Mild diarrhea
* Decreased appetite
* Swollen eyelids

My daughter had that once, she seemed more tired if anything. Didn't act too much out of the ordinary. I know if my son had benadryl too often he gets jittery & fussy.
