I had my first child with a doctor in the clear lake area. She was ok, but I definitely don’t want to deliver another child at Clear Lake Hospital it is absolutely filthy! I would try to find a doctor that delivered at St. John’s but they don’t have a NICU. I would much rather drive into Houston or Galveston than deliver at Clear Lake Hospital again. I would like for the doctor to be on this side of Houston/Galveston as well as the hospital. I am open! Please HELP. We are ready to get pregnant again, but I just cant find a doctor/hospital.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

I had around 25 responses. I cant tell all of you how much it meant to me that you took your time, basically to care about someone you have never even met. Thank you, Thank you, Thank you. I interviewed a few OBs that all of you told me about and I fell in love today with Dr. Mary Claire Haver. I like her so much I cant decide if I want to be her best friend or patient. She was WONDERFUL. I was there 10 min. early, got in to see her 5 min. early and talked with her at least 30 including my pap. Honestly, after my last pregnancy and delivery I was dreading another but now I am excited again. I cant tell you what that means to my husband and I.

Hi Rachel, I live in Pearland and had the same issue when I got pregnant. I decided to go into town off of Fannin and I delivered my baby girl at the Women's Hopstial of Texas. It was awesome and the fact that it's all they do, really made me feel like I did the right choice. They are ready to handle anything and everything in the event of an emergency. I hope this helps, I know you said you wanted to stay close to the clearlake/galveston side but it was worth it to me to make the extra drive.

Have a great day!

Baylor Ob/Gyn has a wonderful group of doctors. I am pregnant with my 2nd and am delivering at Methodist Hospital in the Medical Center. I had my first there and will not deliver anywhere else. They are wonderful!!!! Both the doctors office and hospital are in the Medical Center. Methodist is also partnered with TX Childrens Hospital which is right next door.

Peggy Taylor is AWESOME! She delivered my first but not my last baby and I could tell a difference between how my body healed up after each baby (all vaginal deliveries). I wish she had been my doctor for my last baby. I delivered at St. John's and loved it. I understand your concern about a NICU.

Dr. Kerry Johnson is a great doctor, and he is at St. John's. Yeah, they don't have a NICU, but if something were to happen, they can get the baby what he/she needs until they get them to a NICU (he reassured me). My husband and I loved everything about St. John's. You get lots of attention!! Good luck!

Ok, say you may think I am crazy but I delivered my son at Bayshore in Pasadena. They were clean and wonderful and have a NICU. They have a five star rating for Maternity care. I used Dr. Louie s. Roberts(female) who is wonderful. She has a great reputation with the nurses which makes a huge difference. I live in League city and plan to have my next child at Bayshore as well. My sister had both her girls there with no problems. I had the same nurse throughout my delivery and my son had the same day and night nursery nurse the entire time we were there. Bayshore got a bad wrap in the 80's but went under severe management changes and doctor changes in the 90's. My son was the hit of the nursery with his red hair.

I love Texas Womens Hospital in the Medical Center (on Fannin). I have had 2 children there, one v**, and one C-section and they are the best. My doctor is great, he is funny and takes really good care of you. His name is Ferdinand J. Plavidal and his number is ###-###-####. He is in the building next to the hospital. It is worth the drive.

PS I live in the Sagemont area which is close to Clear Lake. I like to scrapbook and have several get togethers, do you like to scrapbook or is this something you might be interested in?

Hi R., Don't know that I can offer advise on a dr in the Clear Lake area but I got to Dr. Patrice Firpo with OGA and The Women's Hospital on Fannin. It is a bit of a drive when going to the hospital however you are amongst the best drs and hospital around. I go to her satellite clinic in Pearland. She is very personable and I have been with her for over 5 years and couldn't imagine anyone else taking care of my girly needs.

On a different note.. are you into scrapbooking??? I know you are interested in meeting some new friends in the area and I teach scrapbooking and have lots of opportunities to meet fun ladies. Feel free to email me (____@____.com) or visit my website at www.connectedhearts.myctmh.com

Have a blessed day,

Hi R.,

I've used Kerry Johnson for several years and he delivered my daughter last Jan. He is wonderful. I am also a labor and delivery nurse (at Hermann & St. John's), I delivered my daughter there and had a great experience. They have a level 2 NICU. They are able to care for babies that do not remain intubated-the babies that remain intubated get transferred to other hospitals. Good luck!

Good Morning R.-
I absoutely LOVE my OB/GYN, Dr. Ronald Baden (281-482-BABY(2229)). He is in Friendswood and very established. Most of his staff has been with him for years and his wife is the PA with him. They are awesome. He is very down to earth and takes time to talk with you about any concerns you have. In fact, he usually invites you into his office to have more indepth conversations. I have had all three of my children with him and recommend him to everyone I know and all that have been are still his patients. He only practices with Memorial Hermann Southeast - off Scarsdale and Astoira - by San Jack South. I have no problems with that hospital and all my children were born there starting in 99 all the way up to 2006. Good luck in whomever you choose!!! BTW...if you go to Baden, tell him V. Lehman sent you - I've been going to him for 23 years!! - Oh...that was a reality check on my age...ouch! LOL!

I see you mentioned a NICU. Are you expecting to have a high risk delivery? Just curious. Outside of that I would still HIGHLY recommend St. John's. I delivered to of my three children there and had an absolutely amazing experience. All of the rooms are private, the hospital is immaculate and the staff is phenominal. They have excellent lactation consultants on staff and amazing pediatricians! If you are looking for a good OB/GYN I have gone to Dr. Kerry Johnson for almost 10 years now and I absolutely love him. I have several friends who use him also and have never heard a complaint! Good luck in your search!

Though I plan on delivering at a birth center for my next baby, I had both my children at Clear Lake, and am very picky. I didn't feel the way you did about it. Maybe you had a bad experience? I'm sorry that you don't like it. I had 2 good experiences there. And their NICU is so advanced.

My doctor is Dr. Ana Morales. She has an office in Clear Lake (right by the hospital) and one in Pearland. I love her, and she respected the things that i wanted (i wanted all natural, no drugs birth). She also delivers at Memorial Southwest in addition to Clear Lake.

It's too bad we can't just choose a doc, and choose where we deliver, huh?

I've heard good things about Dr. Taylor as well (as per pps below). I have friends that have her, and LOVE her!

My sister and I have both delivered with Dr. Morales and love her. I also like her associates (which is important, because it is possible that they will have to step in).

GL! It's a hard decision, I know!

I have the BEST dr. Dr Peggy Taylor and I delivered at Clear lake on Nov 9th and had the BEST experience. I am very particular about service and I had a great experience. My friend that worked at the hosp said that they have really improved. Below is a link to my dr.'s practice. There are numerous dr's that work with her, but i had her and loved her! A lot of my friends have delivered at Women's on Fannin and said it was not good. So, I guess its all in your opnion.

Hope this helps!

Are you sure about St John's not haveing a NICU? they just remodled last year. And as far as a referral. Dr Maria Rivero delivered my grandson 18 months ago. I love her no nonsense approach. and she really explains anything you have questions about. she was my GYN and I loved her when my daughter was transfered back home when she was 7 months pregnant. she went to Dr Rivero and we really loved her.
She is in the building next door to St Johns. My whole family goes to her now.

I had Dr. Mary-Clair Haver for my first child. She is with UTMB. She is wonderful. I dont know if you know but, they are cutting out the L&D at UTMB/Galveston. However, she delivers at St. Johns in Nassau Bay. UTMB considers St. Johns to be their "mainland" pitstop. The womens center that Dr.Haver is at is right off 646 and I-45 in League City. They staff is great and the nurses are pleasant. During my whole pregnancy, I dont think I waited in the waiting room more than a couple of times. They are organized.
Also, Dr.Haver has a picture in one of the hallways with her and OPRAH. She went on the show after helping with Katrina victims. I might be wrong with this, but she is something like the top 3 ob/gyns in the state.

I would highly recommend my ob/gyn. She delivered my son in 2006 and is very personable with great bedside manor. The only downfall for you is she sees patients in Pearland and Downtown. We delivered at Women's Hospital and had a great experience. If the drive isn't an issue you may want to give her a try. Dr. Jonna Miller ###-###-####. Good luck :)

Hi R., just a few thoughts. I'm a mother of 4. Recently delivered at Clear Lake. I hear what your saying. I think the hospital definetly needs an upgrade. There's alot to consider. 2 of my children were delivered at Clear Lake, 2 at St. Johns. All, for me were pleasant. St. Johns does have a NICU, my now 4 yr. old daughter was there for a week after delivery. However it's not at the higher level as Clear Lake. Had she been critical or needed to be intubated they would have sent her to Clear Lake Hospital. Due to my age 36 I was considered "High Risk", one thing to also consider, St Johns does not have High Risk OB Gyns available they are at Clear Lake. I'm very healthy, have had all v deliveries, however each child although are very healthy, had something that need close attention at birth. With this recent preg. I went for peace of mind. My Dr. was not a High Risk Dr., but she was the one that informed me that if anything happened, they were readily available. I'm grateful I went with Clear Lake, because I had a previa, was anemic ended up having a C section and the baby stayed in there NICU for a few days. The care we rcvd. was great. My doctor was Beth Files across from Clear Lake, that group is excellent, she was wonderful. She was very thorough and personable. Just a thought sometimes, as your preg. progresses you may not enjoy the drive downtown or the business of the downtown hospitals.

Hi Rachel,

I would recommend my doctor. Her name is Meredith Davenport, she's with UTMB. They see pts in Galveston and at the office at 646. But they only deliver at St John in Nassau Bay. The number is ###-###-#### or ###-###-####. I just had a baby in December and she was wonderful.

I had to choose a hospital based on the NICU also, since I go into premature labor at 26 weeks. I know that finding a good OBGYN is so difficult. I know this because my sister and all my friends have bounced around to different drs with each pregnancy. My friends have been very happy with a midwife and homebirth or birthing centers. My sister still hasn't found someone she likes. I really lucked out. :) I found my DR by accident. My first OBGYN said that I needed a tubal ligation, that my first baby was a miracle and any future pregnancies would end in miscarriage or be born too early to survive.

I made an apt to have a tubal and the Dr was WONDERFUL. She felt that doing a tubal was premature and then I got pregnant and she was so very supportive. She has delivered (c-section) three of my babies. my oldest of the four is only 5 years old. But she is fine with that. She has lots of high risk patients and has delivered via c-section the eighth or ninth baby of some of these ladies. She is friendly and compassionate and I absolutely adore her. She is willing to go the little intervention route or be more proactive, whatever YOU are most comfortable with.

So who is this wonderful Dr? Her name is Dawn Black and she works for OGA. She delivers at the Women's Hospital (more on that hospital below.) She sees patients at the Fannin location as well as at "The Woman's Place" in Clear Lake on Bay Area Blvd and in Angleton. First apt must be in Houston because that's where the ultrasound equipment is. When scheduling your subsequent Clear Lake apts tell them that you are an OB patient with Drs permission to go to Clear Lake office. Schedule several apts at a time because they book FAST. She is one of the most popular OBs in Houston. http://www.obgynassociates.com/black.html

When you are going down fannin and it splits off and you see this big glass building right in front of you with the huge mama baby sculpture in the front, that is their office.

The hospital- The Women's Hospital has been well known for decades. That's where my sister and I were born. They have DVD players and whirlpools in the birthing rooms. (Too bad I have c-setions!) They have a lactation consultant on the floor with the post delivery mamas. They have three NICUS levels 1-3. They have top notch neonatologists (and get this- if your insurance doesn't pay all their bill, they don't bill you! They do what they can to get the most out of the insurance but say that parents of NICU babies have enough to deal with and don't need to hassle with the NICU billings!)

The kitchen is most wonderful- they have menus and you order your food an hour or so before you want to eat. You can order as much as you want pretty much so I order a huge meal and then what I don't eat I share with my family. The fish is WONDERFUL but then all of it is. they even have Star Bucks coffee and Danish pastries.

You can have 'rooming in' if the baby is not in the NICU and YOU decide when you want the baby to go back. I told them I didn't want the baby in the nursery and although they argued that the DR needed to see the baby (this is after the initial checkup) I insisted the DR could come to my room. And he did! And he was nice and didn't mind at all.

The NICU is top notch. They have pumps you can use for free, provide the storage bottles and attachments, and you can pump at the isolette or go downstairs to their comfortable pumping room. They have excellent neonatal nurses. I had two babies in this NICU and spent lots of time there. I was so embarrassed once when I bled all over the NICU floor (i was horrified, really.) But the nurses were fantastic.

I have had a couple of bad nurse techs. Just tell your main nurse that you don't want this person in your room. These people have not much training or experience and while most of them are great there are a few 'bad apples.' Just be firm that person is not allowed in your room and you want a different one. They will switch.

Anyway, feel free to contact me with any questions but I probably covered most of it. :) I qualified for Medicaid last birth but I decided that I would not EVER take Medicaid if I can help it because my DR doesn't take MEdicaid and she is just too good to give up!

S., mom to four girls ages 5 to 11 months, all NICU babies except the last one thanks to hormone therapy!
