I am a grandmother that is going through trial and error of foods for my grandson that is 2 1/2 yrs old. We know he is lactose intolerant and does the soymilk and we watch all the labels for ingredients such as soy, whey and etc. but he still is showing side effects..wondering if someone had other suggestions?

Are you sure it's just lactose intolerance and not a true dairy allergy? I spent 10+ years thinking I was just lactose intolerant, but finally found out when I was 40+ that it was a true dairy allergy to casein. Whey protein also causes problems. Also, soy is another very, very common allergen, so you might try rice or potato milk instead. And, soy can cause very similar symptoms as a dairy allergy/lactose intolerance. Also, food allergies rarely occur in isolation and most folks have multiple, with the top allergens being: Eggs, fish, shellfish, wheat, dairy, soy, nuts and peanuts. So, you might try eliminating all of those for a couple weeks and then add back in one by one (leaving at least 3 days between adding anything new - food allergies can be delayed up to 72 hours after exposure).

No major suggestions, but I can recommend this yahoo group, I know lots of parents of kids with severe food allergies, and this group comes highly recommended!

Sounds like a true protein allergy to casein and soy! Did you know that most children are not truly lactose intolerant? That is something older kids and adults tend to have, but not young children. Sounds like he definitely needs to see a GI doctor. My little girl has milk/soy allergy. Most kids have both because of the nature of the protein, but some can handle soy. Feel free to email me for the name of our doctor, she has been much help to us.

If you want to find out what he is truly allergic to and not do the trial, error, and guessing game thing, go see Dr Ken Parker. He does muscle testing to determine allergies and can even treat those allergies with laser therapy. I highly recommend him!

One of my daughters has these issues, but only with drinking milk. SHe can eat cheese and yogurt, but milk tears her little belly up. Soy milk did too. We tried Rice milk, but she didn't like. My pedi recommended giving her the drinkable yogurts and this is how we come to find out yogurt didn't bother her. So that is what we use to get her the same nutritions milk would.

My pedi feels like my daughter will grow out of it. So we are just using the yogurt products and cheese, like slice cheese and mozerrella sticks, instead of milk. I have been doing this since she quit drinking formula (which was milk formula!) I guess prob since she was 14-16 months old and she is 32 months now and healthy as can be...

Hope this helps... good luck!

I had a similar problem with my son. I agree with the other moms, try rice milk or goat milk. My son has finally grown out of most of his sensitivity (he's now 2). But he still cannot drink milk. He can eat cheese, yogurt, etc. But he has to have goat milk or rice milk - not soy. Goat and rice milk are both ok. Goat milk is more expensive. Both taste ok to me and my son doesn't know the difference. Good luck.

For starters if your grandson has a soy allergy he can be having side effects if you are giving him soy milk, as it is made with soy. You may want to try rice milk, if he has not nut allergies, almond milk, or even goat milk. Also if you take away the soy milk and he is still having symptoms he may not just be lactose intolerant he may have a full dairy allergy, meaning he may not be able to have any products containing milk. Some of the other big allergens are wheat, gluten, and nuts, so after eliminating soy and dairy I would slowly try eliminating each of these from his diet. Your best bet though would be to talk to the child's pediatrican about the symptoms and the best way to proceed from there.
