My 5 year old daughter is diagnosed with a clogged tear duct. She is scheduled for surgery. I am concerned with the recovery time / surgery (anesthesia). Please let me know if your child has had this surgery performed.

Hi C.,

My son had surgery on his eyes when he was 4.It was for strabismus but I too was so nervous about him going under anesthesia. It really was fine. He was groggy when he woke up and just watched his favorite shows when he got home and was fine the next day. His eyes were blood shot for a few days but they did not hurt. If you do have a friend or family member to go with you it will help you. Not only to have an extra set of hands but just support in the waiting room. Bring a favorite book or magazine to distract you while you are waiting. I think the end result will be great as a clogged tear duct can't be any fun.Good Luck!

Hi,
My son had his clogged tear duct open at 6 months. The surgery was less then 30 minutes he was up playing and moving around after it. He was crabby when he first woke up from the anesthesia but he wasnt under it for long because the surgery was so quick. After the surgery he had to have drops put in his eyes for a week i think and we had a follow up with the doctor. He is now almost 7 and we have had no problems. good luck with the procedure.
I think the surgery was harder on me because i was nervous just like you. It is normal for you to feel like this. Talk to the Dr it can really help.

My husband had this exact problem in BOTH eyes when he was a baby (12 mos or so). He had no problems and no complications except a bit of light sensitivity, but we think that is genetic, as his mother and father also have it. Good luck and God bless you and yours.

My older daughter (now 19!) had it when she was a toddler. The duct had been blocked for some time but I couldn't bear the thought of a tiny baby undergoing surgery, which was maybe not the best decision and I blamed myself for that. She had the procedure and it went fine. Try not to worry. I stayed with her until the last minute, she was gone a short time, we took her home immediately after and she just relaxed on the couch and got pampered with favorite foods and videos. She had only one follow-up that confirmed the duct was open, and that was that.

Hi C. - I don't have a child who has had this surgery, but I, myself, had surgery on my right eye when I was 5 years old. I had a lazy eye. I came through it like a champ, but my mom was a wreck (as I'm sure you are).
I am sure she will be fine. I was very brave and resilient at that age. And I made out with a new kitten as a result. Just be brave for her and pray. Let us know how she makes out.

I am a Recovery Room RN in a local NYC Eye Hospital - and deal with this type of surgery often. It is common surgery but never theless stressful on both of you. Be assured, the surgery is fairly quick and not complicated, some discomfort is invovled
pain meds are given and usually the child is discharged within - 2-3 hrs after surgery- and recover much better than adults!
She may be a little out of sorts after the surgery, sleepy,
irritable for the next few hrs but by the next day - back to normal. Hope this helps, good luck to you both

My 8 year old son had tear duct surgery when he was 16 months old. The surgery was to repair his tear duct that got torn due to an injury. I'm not sure how they repair a clogged tear duct. My son had to have his tear duct sewn back together and he had a temporary tube that came out his nose. My son was up running around a couple days after the surgery. A few weeks later he was recovered. Today you cannot even tell he had surgery done. He has no side effects or anything.

Hi C.

My daughter did not have eye surgery but she had dental surgery and I can tell you about the effects of anesthesia. This was a scary thought for me but it was really ok. She woke up very groggy and crying because she was disoriented and did not see familar faces. It seemed like she found it hard to focus for a few minutes so I just sang to her and hugged her. Her face was a little puffy and she slept alot the whole time we were in the hospital. She was two and they brought her out of the sleep slowly. I hope this helps C. I know it is very scary but I found that the fear is worse than the actual event.

My son had this done when he was 11 months old. We were in and out that day, he was in recovery for about an hour or two. We then had to put drops in his eyes for a few days. The surgery itself though didn't seem to bother him and we were very concerned because he was on and off oxygen at the time, due to being preemie.

Dear C.:

My daughter has had two eye surgeries. The first when she was five and the second when she was 12. After the surgery, I had to give her eye drops and clean the eyes from discharge every couple of hours. I had to do this for the first week or so. The rest of the recovery was about three weeks and involved no water in or near the eyes, no playing in dirt, no playing by sand, etc. Pretty obvious stuff. She did however, have some minor reaction to the amesthesia. She had some nausea and vomitting. Nothing out of the ordinary. I would definitely speak to your doctor with an concerns you might have. Best of luck to you and your daughter.
