Seeking Moms near Harlem & Irving Park in Chicago

I was wondering if there are other English-speaking moms in my neighborhood... We moved into this neighborhood recently, and when I go to the park with my sons, it seems as if everyone only speaks Polish. We are considering moving because of this, but I figured I would give this a try first. I have two sons -- 2 1/2 and 4 months. My 2 1/2 year old is very friendly, but he doesn't speak or understand Polish so it's hard for him to meet any friends around here!

What can I do next?

I grew up there (Norridge) and it used to be almost 100% Italian (most of the Italians didn't speak much English either). And like you said, it is now mostly Polish. Even tho I don't live in Norridge anymore, I now live in Chicago, right near Merrimac Park (Irving Park & Narragansett). And guess what? Polish everywhere!!! Still, I have found many English speaking moms and kids at both the Norridge Park and Merrimac Park. Also, my son, who is about to turn 4, plays w/other kids that only speak Polish (my son and I don't speak any language other than English). It doesn't seem to bother him too much. I think it bothers me much more.

I work full-time, so I'm at the park in the evenings and on the weekends. If you want to give me a call, we can meet at a nearby park sometime...my son LOVES the Norridge Park!!! My e-mail addy:

Hey there - I am a stay-at-home mom of a 2.5 yr old girl (with another due 8/31/07), we live at Irving and Oriole and we go to Hiawatha Park and see the same things, no english speaking kids or moms. My husband is also a Chicago Firefighter and I know what you mean about being super bored when he is at the fire house for 24 hours.
E-mail me if you like - ____@____.com
Thanks- C.

Hello, I'm M., 36 years old. I have a 7 year old boy and an 8 week old girl. We live at Montrose & Cumberland and always go to the Norridge Park off of Lawrence between Harlem and Cumberland. Nice park, nice kids that speak English and it is very clean. My Husband is a cop, he works crazy hours and I am often there alone with the kids. Take care.

Hi Analisa... I live east of Harlem, by Central, but I take the kids to Oriole Park and Norwood Park on Mondays and Fridays for a music class and a playgroup. The moms at those parks are great! I would say 90% speak only English... I have a 2yo and a 1yo. I'm sure they will let you sit in on a class (they don't take attendance anyways!) Let me know if you want more info!

hi
i have the same issue.... we lived on harlem and belmont and would go to bell park on Oak park and wellington, and all the kids there were polish(not that there is anything wrong with that) but i wanted to meet other moms and my boys wanted to meet friends they understand.\

I am a 25yr mom to two great boys isaiah will be 3 this sun and julian is 19mo. i usually only work two day a wk but were short a person at work so im helping out (9-5)i hate it...i miss my boys....

I have been tring to meet other moms since isaiah was born. I would walk to the park with him and in the last 2.5yrs we have only meet other people that we can only wave hello to....no conversation because they don't speak english...its hard to not have other moms to relate to.....

We should all get together some day.....what park do you guys go to.......
