My 16th month old daughter trips over her feet all of the time! Last night she suffered her third "busted lip" while playing chase with Daddy. Her mouth bled and she has a swollen upper lip with a bruse under her nostrils. She cried for a few minutes, but was easliy soothed. She accepted her binki and drank her milk from her evening bottle just as normal. She slept just fine too. As you know this is scary and concerning when this happens. Have any of you encountered this type of mouth injury with your infants? If so, how do you know if it is serious enough to go to the emergency room or pay the doc an office visit?

What can I do next?

I'm a mom with 3 boys. So we have had some accidents my youngest is 4 and in a cast as I type his wrist is broken an accident with my 11 year old and a backetball, he has had stitches 2 times ones in his lip (6 stitches) from a bike wreck when he had just turned 4 a plactic surgeon did those the second set was in his gential area he fell off the bath counter and hung himself on the handle on the door it took 13 stitches to close him up that time. He lost a tooth during Christmas break a baby tooth (by the way they can't be reset so there no need to go to the ER and or the Dentist unless the tooth is broken in the gum there nothing they can do my sons dentist told me that) Keep in mind this is all recent stuff and just with my 4 year old. Not to mention the several times hes already turned over his four wheeler or crashed his bike or the fact that he can swim as good as my 11 year old and dives of a 25 foot platform at our lake lot with a life jacket even though he thinks he don't need it. All kids are accident prone and were just parent here to pike up the pieces.

Hi M. my daughter fell ALOT and busted her lips ALOT. The first 3 times we took her to the ER or her Dr.never was it bad enough to be stitched or glued. The mouth and lips heal very quickly. But as a mom I freak out too,and if you take her and you are told she doesnt need stiches well thats fine too. When my daughter was 2 she fell running to her Grammy and knocked a front tooth totally out.She had a bridge until she was 6. I hope this helps

if it knocks one of her teeth loose then its time to take her to the dentist. but as far as emergency room or doc office its just stuff shes going to have to heal on her own its just bumps and bruses that shes gonna get. both of my kids are rough and tumble always getting hurt my daughter has fallen many times and hit her mouth and last year she finally fell and hit it hard enough to knock her front tooth out took her to the dentist said its just going to have to grow back in when she gets her permant teeth. My son fell into the coffee table and knocked his front tooth loose took him to the dentist he had a 90% chance that he would loose it he actully kept the tooth. If shes got some bruseing around her teeth on her gums or they bleed the falls can weaken her front teeth and shorten the roots so they fall out sooner. so check out her teeth after she falls you may need to take her to the dentist.

We did well not naming our 16-month little girl "Grace" ... she is just as clumsy as her poor mommy, lol. At least once a week she falls or trips while playing "football" with her daddy (where, he rushes her screaming 'blue 42!' and she runs screaming and laughing) and usually manages to land on something hard. We have a list printed out on the fridge of concussion symptoms and we always have some Tylenol or Motrin around for headaches or achiness after a tumble. Like the other mom said - if it's not a serious injury (loose tooth, or looks like it needs stitches) she should be okay. Another thing that my dr. told me (because I was so worried about Rori the first time she hit her head) was that it's very normal for a child to feel sleepy after bumping their head, and it's okay to let them sleep (provided they show no other concussion symptoms) - but to check them 30 minutes and then an hour after they go to sleep -- tickle their feet or take their pacci out of their mouth - if they stir or get upset as they normally would, they are fine. Good luck with your little tomboy -- perhaps her and Rori will be on the same T-ball team one day, lol.

If you feel concerned just give the doctor a call and explain the injury and ask them if they would consider it cause for concern. When my first child was 1 he fell into a door frame bolt and hit his head...it became a golf ball size knot poking out and very bruised, so we called the doctor and they explained the signs I should watch out for and said that if there were none in the next 24 to 48 hours he'd be fine. Btw I know it sounds weird but for my son's bruise we put a little butter on it and it was gone in a couple of days.

I understand injury prone infants. My 17 month old son recently met our driveway. With his face. Did he cry? Noooo. Did Mommy? Yep. This, in addition to a couple of busted lips from various exploits, led me to ask my doctor about my son's "injuries." Any injury above the neck that bleeds, will bleed a lot. If it's in the mouth, there may be less blood than you actually think. If a tooth is knocked out or if the bleeding won't stop, then there's cause for concern. Usually you can take your cues from your child's reaction, and how long it takes to calm down after the accident. Good luck with your daughter!
