Seeking Midwife

Hello, my s/o and I are moving to Independence (from NM) at the beginning of September. I would like to find a midwife who practices in that area. My s/o is not comfortable with a home birth (this is our first baby), so we are looking for someone who can deliver at a hospital or (preferably) another more professional facility. I would also be happy with a midwife who practices within a group that includes OB/GYN's. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated! Thank you :)

So What Happened?

Thanks for all of the advice and names! We checked out quite a few, and ended up selecting Sage Femme Birth Center in KC, KS. It's about 15 miles from us, which was within the radius I wanted; the birth center is free standing (no hospital room!!); the staff are incredibly nice; and they have a great water birthing tub. It was just the right fit for our needs.
Thanks again!

Amber Walla is someone you should contact. She's a doula and a Bradley instructor. She's so hooked in to the midwifery community and could lead you in the right direction based on your needs. ____@____.com

I agree with the others about Sheila Roth and her group. She is SO attentive and sweet, as they all are. They all have lots of experience and are very reassuring and comforting. In their center they have tons of resources available for you like books, videos, names of doulas, massage therapists, etc, etc.
They deliver at research medical center but they have their own midwifery practice inside the hospital. I also beleive now they have their own birthing unit catered to their patients for more in-home "like" births.

My OB's office has certified nurse midwife that delivers at 2 area hospitals. The practice I got to is Healthcare For Women (Hausheer Braby & Assoc). in Independence. The nurse is Kimberly Negrete--I saw her one time during my pregnancy and she is really nice. She delivers at St. Mary's In Blue Springs and Centerpoint in Independence. I really love all the doctors in the practice and have heard great things about Kimberly from others who have had her deliver their baby. Good luck!

BTW-I see Dr. Dowd from that office and he is outstanding.

Kimberly Negrete, CNM is part of of Hausheer,Braby and Associates. They are located in the new Centerpoint Hospital Building in the medical office buildings. I work in Labor and Delivery at Centerpoint and she is very, very nice. She is the only midwife in the independence area. You would need to go to the Northland or the plaza area to find other midwives. Centerpoint has a level 3 Nicu and has a very nice L&D area. As for birthing centers outside of hospitals...there are not any in the immediate area. The phone number is ###-###-####. I really really like all of the Doctor's that are in that group as well. I hope this helps.

D., I can't say enough good things about Shiela Roth and her partners at Midwest Women's Healthcare, ###-###-####. Please go for a visit and talk to them. They practice with several OB's but are interested in home-like births in a hospital setting. The laws here and the insurance rates are prohibitive of good CNM's (certified nurse midwives) practicing homebirth. I hope things work out well for you!

Hi D.,

I used to see Lee Allison Voi at St. Luke's on the Plaza. It's not in Independence but not too far of a drive. She practices with a group of doctor's: Dr. Perryman is one of the doctors. Hope that helps.

Hausheer, Braby and Assoc. have a midwife, Kimberly, on staff with a NP and ob/gyns....they are a great group to work with. Dr. Adams there has delivered all three of my babies and he's incredible. :-) Rosemary, the NP, is also wonderful

They are located at Center Pointe Hospital now...###-###-####....HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!! Hope this helps.

BTW...if you are looking for an alternative to a hospital they do have a birthing facility in Kansas which isn't too far. I'm not sure of the exact location but you could google it...that's how I found it.

I highly recommend Sheila Roth of Midwest Midwifery. She attended my first son's birth. Phone is ###-###-#### ... she's at Research Hospital in KCMO ... but she does office visits around the metro too.
