I would like to register my preschool age boys in a karate class this summer. Can anyone recommend a karate studio? It is important to me that the instructors at the studio work well with young children. I would also like to know if anyone has had a negative experience with any studios. I live in Allen.

My son is 12 and has attended the same school since Kindergarten. They start kids at about 3 1/2. Our school is the Carrollton Black Belt Academy also known as Carrollton ATA. You can call ###-###-#### and speak with Mrs. Musgrove or Mr. Pechacek (pec ka chek) to find out about affiliated schools in your area. There are several. Tell them "Adam P's" mom suggested you call.

Here's one for Richardson (75 and Campbell. Sun Lee Texas tae Kwon Do http://txtkd.com/. Matser Jason is great with the kids! My 6 1/2 yr old has been going for a year. he started in the 4-5 year old class which is at 3:30 (or it may have moved to 3:45 now) for 30 minutes. Master Jason focuses a lot on character development, especially in the youngest class. My son is very cautious and non-competeative (wouldn't even play duck duck goose as a toddler/preschooler!) and this place has helped a lot. He also has a monthly Game Night (Parent's Night Out)with pizza and games. My soon-to-be 4 year old can not wait for his birthday so he'll be old enough to start too (2nd child discount!!!) It costs more than going through a rec center ($100 a month for the 4-5 year olds, slightly higher when older) but has been worth it to us.

I also have a friend who has had 2 kids in classes through the Plano rec and really liked it. i forget the name of the rec center - on Coit somewhere around Park I think?

I'm not sure where you reside but my son has been attending Taekwondo at Rowlett Martial Arts Studio since he was 5, now 9. I know you said Karate but Taekwondo is very similar and I think you'll like it. We've been going there for sometime now and my son has never said he "doesn't" want to go..Good luck. This is located in Rowlett and the instructor is Alex Nixon and his wife manages the office, Glenda. The number is ###-###-####. You can tell them Y. Williams referred you.

I'm not sure what area your looking for. We just put our 4 year old into taekwondo in McKinney. Its at TKD Fit on Virginia, just west of Custer.

They have a little dragon program for 3 & 4 year olds but if you have a 4 year old that takes instruction well they can go up to the white belt class. Our son loves it. So far the most he has had in any class was 9 kids and that was the Friday class that has all belt colors together. Last night there were 6 kids in his class. We really are enjoying it.

USA Martial Arts at Spring Creek/Coit in Plano is great! Both instructors are wonderful with kids and they are excellent with preschoolers.
There is a USA Martial Arts in Allen - although I haven't been to that location. They offer great classes for preschoolers. My son started going there about 2 months ago and loves it! And I'm so happy with his improvement in attention span; listening; respect; helping out at home. Martial Arts teaches the kids to do well at home and school -- there's a checklist that I have to sign off on every week to report that my son is doing his chores or helping out at home - he earns a stripe on his belt for that checklist. He's learning more than just martial arts - he's learning great life lessons and disciplines (self-control over body and emotions, etc.).

I am not sure where you live or how far you are willing to commute but my 4 yr old goes to Vu's Martial Arts http://www.vusmartialarts.com/ and loves it. My son is very shy at first and doesn't do well with new surrondings and they really made him feel welcome and move at his own pace and not pressuring him into participating until he was ready. I think they start classes for children as young as 3 and go up. Mr. Vu and Mr. Sebastian are great with the kids and have a lot of patience and really try to boost their self esteem along with teaching them the techniques. Other ppl help out as well and they are just as good! They will let you come in and try out a class before signing up and they spend the time really getting to know the child. I am so impressed with them and I feel they are very reasonably priced.

Hi L., I am a member of Mamasource and the office manager of Vision Martial Arts Center. We have classes for 3-5 year olds available Wed. @ 5:30pm and Sat. @9:00am We have a website: www.visionmartialarts.com and our phone number is ###-###-####. Our preschool instructors are also parents and work really well with children. Look forward to hearing from you.

P.S. Just read some of the other comments and wanted to let you know that it sounds like we all have similar programs regarding character development and physical development. The best thing would be to try a couple of locations(we are at Spring Creek and Alma) and see where you and your child are the most comfortable.
P.S.S. Almost forgot--Vision is a mom-owned dojo and has bee at the same location for over 12 years.

Ditto on the USA Martial Arts dojo at Spring Creek and Coit. We live closer to the one in Allen, but we were so impressed with the instructors at this site that we allowed my son to enroll. We went to a birthday party there for a preschool classmate and our son (4.5) reacted so well to the lesson and showed an immediate interest. As Amy indicated, it's much, much more than just about martial arts at this location. The focus this month was good manners and they talked about different kinds, i.e., playground manners versus eating out manners. This is in a short 5 minute talk at the end of class. The rest of the time is spent learning techniques, such as punches, kicks, getting out of holds, etc.

Good luck with whatever location you choose, but pay attention to how the adults interact with the children and one another. Your child will look up to their instructor (just like they do to you), so it's important they are exhibiting behavior and characteristics you want your child to model.

Ricks Kicks in Frisco, Texas. My daughter has been going there since she was 4 going on 5 years now and my 4 year old son just started 2 months ago. I LOVE this place. Rick is very good with the kids. You can set and watch them through a large glass window. My son hates for the class to be over. The class sizes are very small and he works with each and everyone of the kids. The first few classes he talks about stranger danger and my son could not wait to tell me what he had learned and how to get away if need be. I highly recommend this place for any child of any age. Plus they have many class times to pick from for your convenience.

My daughter took classes at Karate for Kids in Allen.(They also have one in Murphy and McKinney.) She loved it and took there for several years before she wanted to move on to dance lessons. They are an ATA school.

Ricks Kicks in Frisco does an outstanding job with pre-schoolers. My son started at 4 and stayed with it until he was almost 8.
