I have a son that will be 5 in June. He was just diagnosed with PDD-NOS, ADHD and ODD. My head is still swimming. I am overwhelmed and don't know where to begin. If you can possibly help me start to sort this out and share your wisdom and experiences, I would love to hear from you.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

I am so thankful for all the information. I contacted the Carrollton-Farmers Branch ISD and requested another meeting. I will see them on April 22nd. I am armed with a ton of information, doctors assessments, a stiff upper-lip and determination. LOOK OUT!! I have contacted my insurance and will attend the meeting at LISD in May. I have a few other numbers that you guys provided to me that I will contact tomorrow. I don't get much time on the computer these days. I spend most of my day in our treehouse with my son (he is quite demanding about this). Today we had breakfast, lunch and dinner outside in that treehouse. Oh well it could be worse, the weather could be cold :). I will keep you posted and again thank you so much.

You need to call your insurance NOW and find out what diagnoses are covered for mental health benefits. I work for a mental health insurance company, and I know that alot of them out there DO NOT cover services for PDD or ANY of the Autism spectrum disorders. The mental health company says, that's medical, call your medical insurance for coverage, and the medical one says, that's psych, call your mental health provider. Basically, no one has been able to agree where or how services should be covered, so alot of times they just aren't.

Good Luck.

Several years ago a few moms started a yahoo support group for the Dallas/Ftw area and I think you will like this and benefit from these wonderful women. There is so much information on there and lots of support!
If you email me offline I will send your email to the moderator for you to get an invite. Also email me any questions you have. I will help you in a direction that you need. Have you contacted the Brent Woodall Foundation? I believe they are in Coppell and they have some resources. I look forward to helping you all I can!

Hello E. - Well first congrats for the great attitude you have and wanting to find out what to do for your son. That will go a long way as you take this journey.
My oldest son was diagnosed with PDD when he was 4, he is now 6 and thriving. He was on the higher functioning end of the spectrum. We started him in an intense ABA (Applied Behavorial Analysis) therapy and continued it for a year and a half. It did wonders working on his specific needs - he was reserved, language delay (did not talk until 3)to name a few. The therapy center is in Plano and is called Wayman Learning Center - google it. It did wonders for my child - not cheap, but worth every penny. I also recommend you read books covering the autism spectrum so you have a better understanding of what you are dealing with. I am happy to talk with you anytime, my cell phone is ###-###-####. Best of luck and you are the best advocate for your child!

A great place to start is looking into private schools that can teach your son coping skills through behavior management. I suggest The St. Anthony School for these early years. After your cowardly husband leaves, you can ask the judge to have him pay for his specialized schooling considering he his a special little boy. I also recommend you call Fletcher & Associatees - ###-###-####. They are an excellent team for our kiddos.

Someone mentioned the insurance piece, so I thought I'd add my 2 cents...
In Texas, look into House Bill 1919 for coverage of this diagnosis. About 8-9 years ago, insurance companies began kicking all Autism Spectrum disorders out calling them either a developmental delay or mental health issue. However, in Texas, the recent passage of HB 1919 has put a stop to this. We have had success (I work at a speech and occupational therapy company)writing letters to the insurance companies with some HB 1919 info attached. You must have a plan that covers speech/occupational therapy. If your plan covers it, they cant kick it out based on the diagnosis. They DONT have to give you unlimited coverage, but we have seen that happen, too. Now, this doesn't apply if your insurance plan is self-funded. There is very little regulation for the self-funded plans. Of course, I've had kids come in and we've had no problems with their insurance plan at all...But we've had some pretty big fights, too.
Good luck!

Contact your school district. He may be eligible for PPCD (public preschool for children with disabilities). If you are in the Lewisville ISD, they have an awesome Special Ed PTSA- just google it and their website should come up. They are having a Special Needs parents fair on May 9th and if it is as good as it was last year, there will be a lot of information. Even if you are not in LISD, you can still attend the fair and the programs. Be prepared, there are a ton of philosophies and programs out there; you will need to figure out what works for your son and what won't. Find a good support group of moms in your situation, that will help as much as anything.
