I ahve a six month old who is still intolerant to rice cereal. She is showing all the signs of being ready for food, but when you feed her it is a disaster. If anyone can point me in the right direction I would appreciate it.

What can I do next?

Although she's 6 months old and the pediatrician has told you she is ready for solids, I wouldn't try to force her to eat it. I have an 8 month old that just started eating solids in the last 4 weeks. I tried at 5 and 6 months with her with no luck - she didn't want it or would push it out of her mouth. If you wait a few weeks perhaps it would help. Have you tried other foods besides cereal? I know my little girl won't eat cereal unles it's mixed with fruit.

HI, R.. MY DAUGHTER IS ALMOST 6 MONTHS AND HAS BEEN EATING CEREAL FOR ABOUT A MONTH AND HALF NOW. I MIX HERS WITH FRUIT OR ANY OTHER KIND OF FOOD. SHE HAS EATEN A LITTLE OF EVERYTHING. THE ONLY THING I WOULD SUGGEST IS NOT TO GIVE HER TOO MUCH FRUIT RIGHT OFF. MY 2ND CHILD BECAME ADDICTED TO SWEET STUFF REALLY EASY BECAUSE OF THAT. HE WOULDNT EAT ANYTHING BUT FRUITS OR ANYTHING SWEET.. AND AT 5 HE IS STILL ALOT LIKE THAT.

My son has problems with food tolerance. His pediatrician put him on Nutramigen formula, Zantac, and Levsin drops. He's doing much better.

Maybe she just doesn't like the taste of the rice cereal. Did you try the mixed cereal. My son is five months and he prefers the mixed over the rice. He also loves stage one fruits and veggies, why not give them a try?
Good luck!

I know a lot of people disagree with me but it worked for me. I put it in my daughters bottle. I mixed it with her formula and put it in a bottle. You will have to cut the hole in the bottle a little bigger so the cereal can get through but it worked and after a week or so she started eating it with a spoon and bowl. She does need the iron so thats how it worked for me. Oh and the applesauce thing worked really well also. Just mix it with some applesauce.

I used to mix it with applesauce. I wouldn't recommend giving up yet, my doctor said it was very important to get the iron from it since they are getting less from formula/breast milk when they start eating solids. They make special bottles where you can mix it with formula as well, maybe that would help? Mine always loved it with applesauce, or I'd make it with a little breast milk instead of water. Good luck!

Have you tried mixing in some pureed fruit (such as banana) to make it taste a little sweeter? The banana is easy to digest and will give it a little more flavor. If she still doesnt care for it, just try once a week until she shows more signs of being ready. Maybe the spoon just frustrates her and she needs time.

My doctor JUST last week told me that the only reason that there is rice formula is to make those companies money...that said, he told me to feed them straight from the table. He said to mash up the food you have on your plate, give them large carrots, celery, or bagels to naw on. This is unheard of for some, but it may stop those finicky eaters that stay on babyfood for so long!?!

WE never did rice cereal, we started right on the first stages food, with fruit and then shortly after veggies. Our daughter did great. If this is a tollerance that she just doesn't want the rice cereal then I would try something else. If this is a food allergy intollerance then I would take her to the doctor to find out what she is allergic to and steer clear of those items. It will make your life and hers so much better.

You didn't exactly describe what happens when you try and feed your baby solids. Gagging, vomiting, loose stool, constipation, screaming from colic, etc? Can you give details?
