Seeking High Protein Drink for Adults

Hi, Moms! My sweet husband has finally made the decision to start losing weight. Bless his heart, he has been about as round as he is tall for the past 15 or more years. His belly looks like there's a basketball under his skin. I know this is dangerous and have been asking him to do something about it for a long time. Please understand that weight is not a big issue with me--I don't care what he weighs, as long as he's healthy.

Today he asked me if I knew of a protein drink that he could take in his lunch box to substitute for the sandwich that I pack him almost every day. He is a weight-lifter and wants something that is better than Slimfast or any diet drink. Have any of you tried a protein drink that is portable (like in a can or a bottle) that he could try? Thanks in advance for your help. You never cease to amaze me!

Ditto on the "muscle milk" I get the "light" you can get a case @ Sam's. it's 100cal., 3 grams of fat & 15 grm of protein, also any type of zone bar, fiber bar, any thing like that might hold off on snacking on junk food in the afternoon, or late morning. He might need to see a nutritionist first. Good luck.

My hubby takes a protein drink almost everyday. I just put a scoop of whey protein that you can buy in a big can at Walmart in a zip lock baggie. Then I put in an empty water bottle. Then he can fill it up with water at work and just shake it up and rinse it when he is done. They have vanilla, chocolate and strawberry and you can have one or two scoops depending on his calorie needs and if has just worked out or not.

Hi S.,

I like the Mix 1 Protein and Antioxidant drinks. They have 15 grams of protein, 23 vitamins and minerals, the antioxidants equal to 4 cups of green tea and 3 servings of fruits/veggies. The drinks are lactose, gluten, soy and caffeine free.

I get them at HEB Plus.

I use Muscle Milk lite. It has about 100 Cals and about 17g Protein. If he wants to replace the meal, don't use the LITE. Regular Muscle Milk has about 300 Cals if I remember correctly. EAS Body for Life also makes a good Low Cal and regular drink. These both taste great in my opinion. If you want to do a mix I've only used 1 that I like. It is no sugar, low carbs and low cals. You could always double the drink size to get more cals/nutrition if needed. Dessert (sorry... can't remember the brand..I'm using a GNC brand now and don't like it..doesn't mix) has great tasting protein and packs about 25-35g / serving.

Go to Bodybuilding.com or GNC.com to look at the different brands. The mix you could take in the 'shaker' and just add water or milk depending on the cals and nutrition needed. (also if there is refrigeration).

Bars are also an option. Special K has good ones along with Fiber one and Ironman Powerbar. These are all in HEB. Another good site is OptimumNutrition.com (you may want to google this one... not sure if that is correct. Optimum Nutrition is the brand/ Co.)

Hope these help. I've been packing my lunch and heavy bodybuilding/lifting for years (like 20). I became a personal trainer 5 years ago, but I don't work with as much nutrition as I do with exercise. It will probably be a trial period for taste and satiety.

Good luck to you and your husband. GREAT decision as this is the worst kind of weight to have. He will add years to his life and extend the his knee and foot life.

I have used Isopure. You can either buy it in a sports type drink, where if I remember correctly there is 15g of protein in a glass bottle and it looks/tastes like you are drinking coolaid. I used this and ate some fruits and veggies with it to balance out the meal. Buying it by the case, can be expensive.

You can also buy the powder form and make smoothies, put them in 1pint rubbermaid drinking containers and freeze them. If you take one out in the morning and use it as your ice in your lunch box it is usually defrosted by lunchtime, if not I would stick mine in the mocrowave for a few seconds unil it was drinkable :)

You can get the isopure zero carb protein or the low carb protein.

http://www.isopureplus.com/nutrition_drinks.html
http://www.isopureplus.com/zero_carb.html

The powder also is no thick and goopy like most shakes, when you mix it you can just mix it with water and drink it like coolaid.

I too can vouch for cinch from Shaklee. I lost 15 pounds in a month and didn't really follow their meal plan. If you take the cinch caplet also, you'll make certain you only lose fat and not muscle.

Please be careful with protein shakes!

In the right quantity they can be very helpful for weightloss... but too much protein will cause kidney problems. This is from our trusted doctor, who asked about my husband's diet when he had kidney stones. Have your husband consult his doctor or a dietician for a best-odds way for him to lose the weight and keep it off. There are plenty of books, websites, etc., also that have good information - just make sure you read more than one source because 1) nothing works for everyone and 2)everyone has a product to sell these days.

We are in your same situation - DH has been 40+lb overweight and tried the shakes, diets, exercise, supplements... pretty much everything. He is a big researcher and has finally found something that works for him. His favorite book is The Gabriel Method by Jon Gabriel, and he's joined Crossfit San Antonio. In one month he's lost 5" on his waist and gained 1" of arm muscle (he measures weekly and we're excited!!)... but the workouts are killer! He's competitive though so he likes it.

Good luck to your husband. KUDOS to him for choosing a healthy life!

That is wonderful on the weight loss commitment!

I go to GNC for those types of things. They really know their product well!

My kids swim and I teach fitness classes and we have tried a lot of things: Boost, Myoplex, Ensure and about 6 other things. One day I read an article on how much sugar is in some of these protein drinks---some of them are very high in sugar. Not good for trying to lose weight.

A dietician recommended Amplify, sold at GNC. We have tried about 4 flavors---chocolate is the best, for being protein, vitamins and low sugar. It's about 30 or $35 for a huge jar and it lasts a long time!

The best thing you can get at GNC is their Blender Bottle! It's a shake container with a whisk like thing in it and you make your own shake with low fat milk and Amplify powder! (Always do milk first then powder on top and shake to mix!)
Making his own shake in his blender bottle will be much less expensive (and better for the environment!) than buying all those little bottles of stuff.

I love BOOST , it's not just for the elderly anymore.
It is lactose free, has 26 vitamins and minerals, 240 cal., 6 grams of fat and 15 grams of protein. Be sure to get the one that says HIGH PROTEIN. They come in chocolate, vanilla and strawberry flavor. They are also very portable and easy to grab and go- they are in plastic bottles. No mixing required. Sold in most grocery stores.
Good luck!

Hi S.,
I agree with the other mom, please be very careful with Protein Shakes. And also when you do find the right product for your husband, please consult with the Doctor or Nutritionist to look at the ingredients.

With that said, we have used Shakes(Meal Replacements) from a Company called USANA for the past 6 years. We have also helped many others lose weight as well as body builders keep the weight on. I have used Slimfast in the past due to competing in Pageants(dumb idea lol) so I know the difference.

This is not a diet! Diets do not work. When you view the video below you will understand why.

I use them in my daily life as well as my husband and my children and wouldn't dare put them in harms way. It was put together by a Doctor and is Low-Glycemic(very important) and is portable as well. My husband enjoys them so much he keeps it at work as well as a portable hand mixer. But it does come with a Shaker bottle.

Here are some documents you can look at:
http://bit.ly/thereset

Here is also a video to view the product and how it works:

Hope you find what works best. If you don't find anything feel free to email me, ____@____.com
We want your husband to live a long and healthy life.
God bless!
E.

Well the Medifast always works for people I've known to use it, including myself. Just remember that you must learn to cook & eat healthier foods/meals if you want to maintain that weightloss. Exercise of some sort is necessary too. Just getting out & walking 30 min. a day does wonders. I'm also a Herbalife distributor & if you're interested, send me a message & I can help him get set up or if you're out of my area, can help you find a distributor in your area. Remember, it usually takes at LEAST 30-60 days sometimes for a person to start seeing results but in men, it can be sooner since women's bodies can have difficulty in losing weight as quick as we'd like. Good luck!

I really like the Herbalife products. There are two different protein drink mixes that you mix with water (tastes like kool-aid), and protein bars that taste like candy bars. They all taste good, and they cost about what you would spend for something comparable at a health food store. I've used them for a year now, and gone from a size 16/18 to a 10.
Good luck!

Coconut milk is awesome and helps in losing weight. Go to any health store, the staff will help you with all the choices. My husband lost 130 lbs, (with gastric)but he was on a liquid diet first. He used Jay Rob, chocolate. He would use the shake in the am, then a salad at lunch (that he brought from home -most of the time.) A broth soup at dinner, or you can add the coconut milk in. THINGS TO WATCH OUT FOR: aspartame and splenda, they will make you crave carbs more, and can cause brain tumors and a whole lot of other issues! And SOY can cause thyroid issues. TOO much protein can hurt his kidneys. My mom runs the Life Emporium in Lockhart (just off the square, 111 San Antoino, ###-###-####) She dose health counseling, its like $35 an hour, but she will give you a lot of info, It really would be worth it to talk to her! She runs a cafe there to, stop in in one day for lunch and she'll let you know if she can help. Good luck!

For the pre-prepared, packaged, I used to drink Muscle Milk. I didn't like the Light one b/c I don't like the taste of artificial sweeteners, but that's just a personal preference. Apex also makes a WONDERFUL meal replacement shake that is high protein, though I forget what it is called right now.
I worked with a personal trainer last year and lost about 36 inches overall in about 4 months by changing my diet & excercising. The main thing for me in losing the belly was to change what I ate. 6 lower fat meals a day, gradually reduced from 10grams each to 6 grams each made the biggest difference for me.
I just realized the other day when I was doing laundry that now at 7mos preggo, my belly is about the same size as it was a year ago before I changed my diet! I was also having lots of health issues, etc because of my weight, and after I lost so much fat (not much on the scale) that's when we were finally able to conceive after trying for 4 yrs or so.
Best of luck to your hubby & you as he makes this change. It's so great that you are supporting him- it makes a HUGE difference! Once I finally got my hubby & son on board, we all started eating better & getting healthier together. =o))
