Hi, I have a Twenty month old little girl, and a four month old girl as well. Me and my husband have tried to discuss when to potty train our twenty month old. He thinks we should wait until she turns two in April but I think she is already showing signs that she is ready. There are sometimes I will let her run around the house with nothing but a diaper on and when she goes pee she will take her diaper off and bring it to wherever I am at, then she will lay down and let me put another diaper on. Usually we have to fight with her to let us change her diaper. I am just afarid that if we were to try now she wouldn't understand because of her four month old sister, and we would just screw everything up.

What can I do next?

I'd do it I potty trained my daughter at the same age while expecting my son. if you can get her to pee in the potty find something of huge value...we used stickers. we had a chart paper taped to the wall beside the potty and she got to put a sticker on every time she peed. 2 if she pooped. (which was harder. I let her wear panties around the houes, but had to take her in every 15 minutes and try - set the oven timer. I'ts tiring but worth it. if she actually peed i would wait like 30-45 min before i took her again. accidents were no problem, no punishment at all..just messy. take it by day, if she seems frustrated take a break, don't force it. If she knows what she's doing and starts to regress, I personally wouldn't allow it my sister n law did with her son and it was just a fight, she laid down the rules...and he gave in. I wish you the best of luck...remember you're the mom, you know best deep down, you know when she's ready. I felt I did and my daughter was fully out of diapers by 26 months even at night.

My daughter is 19 months and we're going through a similar situation. Once or twice a day she'll tell me she has to go potty and I sit her on the toilet (you can buy a small insert for the toilet) and she goes. Then she wipes, flushes and washes her hands. I think it's more of a game to her right now, but she's getting the idea. When she first started showing interest in going potty we would just let her sit on it a couple of times a day, wipe, flush, etc. Now that she's actually going she only gets to wipe and flush if she goes. Sort of a reward, I suppose. I don't push the issue b/c I don't want it to become a battle. I want her to have control over it. Good luck and have fun with it.

Since she is showing signs of readiness, go ahead and introduce her to the potty. She is the "big girl" in the family now, and she might just go for it. If she fights you on it, stop until she's a little older.

Happy New Year A.! Your daughter is ready and that's awesome. Don't pressure her and let her go at her pace. My daughter was completely potty trained by 17 months. She showed signs at 13 months by putting on my freshly folded underwear from the laudry. I thought it was cute and peculiar so I discussed it with my sister. My sister said she is ready to potty train so go out and purchase a potty chair. I did so and allowed her to imitate me when I went to the bathroom. It was uphill from there. She was never pressured and at 14 months I purchased pull-ups....she really felt like a big girl. Make it fun and reward her. No need to wait until April.

good morning A.
Well first of all she is young so don't push the issue some peds say that older sibs will revert back with new siblings. However i was in the same boat. I had a daughter that was practicly potty training herself. my doct said she was to young she was 15 months. but I let her go at her own pace. but when she would get up and before bed, after naps or meals I would offer or ask if she wanted to go potty. some times I just take her with me. young children tend to imatate. and it worked great. i never punished for messes. but commented on her achievements. She potty trained with minimal effert. consitsncy really help build habbits so give it a shot just keep in mind she is very young so always stay positive. good luck

Sounds to me like she is ready for potty training. I had my son potty trained by 18 months through alot of hard work. It pays off though. It may be more difficult for you because of the younger babe needing so much attention though.
Keep a watch on her and note any signs that she may be 'doing her business' as soon as you see her doing it. Rush her to the potty and place her on it. Even if she only gets a little in, or none at all, she will soon learn that that is where she needs to be when she decides to go. Be consistent and praise her whenever she makes it in the potty.
And Good Luck!

i've always waited for cues from my kids, letting me know they're ready...our daughter was pt'd when she was 2, then regressed due to autism and re-pt'd at 5...my son *sighs*...well..he was tinkle trained at 2,then regressed when we had the baby...we tried stickers, but that didn't work...we now have a big thing of gumballs...he's tinkle trained again and gets one gumball when he tinkles...2 gumballs if he poo's...we've yet to give him 2,but he sure camps out and tries, ha ha..i wasn't keen on giving candy or food, but i think gum is pretty safe, but at 20 months, she's still a little young for it...my 16 month old is showing signs and interest, but we'll wait a bit longer....everyone else had great advice, i just thought i'd throw in my two dirty pennies :)

I am going through it with my 2 1/2 yr old son, and have been for some time. If a child can tell you when he/she has just gone than you can start. She may do it for a little bit and then stop that (I have been told) is normal. If you have a potty chair try sitting her on it when you go. If she is showing signs it is never to early to start. I don't know, if she goes to daycare you would want to tell them what you are doing and ask if they help with that (some do, some don't). It is real hard if they do not help. I hope this will help you in making your decision.

Mine does the same thing. What I do is before I change her diaper I let her sit on the potty. In the morning when she gets up I put her on the potty, and before I put her in the bath she will sit on the potty. She is getting the idea. But don't force it. At this age it is hard to get the control of the pee and poo. Hope this helps.
