Seeking Great OBGYN in Ft. Lauderdale for Pregnant Transplant

I will be moving to Ft. Lauderdale (near Las Olas) in a few weeks from VA. I am 15 weeks pregnant and will be needing an OBGYN right away. I have Aetna so most providers are covered and I am approved for all the nearby hospitals too. If anyone has a great doctor to recommend or has had a super experience at a particular hospital- I'd love to hear about it. I prefer to have a female OBGYN- but I'm open-minded. Thanks for your help!

So What Happened?

Thank you everyone for your responses! This has been my first experience posting on mamasource- and it has been such a great help. I can honestly say I feel much relieved about moving to a state where I know no one- and choosing a new doctor- because of all the positive advice I've gotten from all of you. Thanks again for your recommendations- I will be making some phone calls and setting up an appt. right away! Thanks again.

Hi T.~

I used Dr. Patricia Calvo she is cute, young has 2 young children and she is so easy to work with and I had Aetna too! I have a bit OCD and she knew how I like to be in control and I had told her that so freaked out about the well unknown delivery time so we decided to do a planed c-section and it was wonderful!!!! Holy Cross Hospital is one of the 50 best in America and it is just adjacent to her office building! I loved the anisteolgist (sp?) he was great and all in all I enjoyed my 4 day stay at this hospital. Only One time after I had my son, I think it was my 2 week check up, 5 months ago I had to see Jennifer Harper in that office but she is older but just as equally nice!! If you have any other questions please feel free to contact me! I am in fort Lauderdale if you need anything else…Best of luck!

Hi T.,

First of all, congratulations! It is very exciting to be having your first. Where are you from in VA? We moved here from Alexandria, but I had lived in Blacksburg before that.

I've found that obgyns down here are much, much harder to find than in VA. We have a major shortage due to the ridiculous amount they have to pay in insurance. In fact, you will find that many doctors listed as obgyns only do the gyn and not the ob because the malpractice insurance is too high.

That being said, I love my obgyn, his name is Dr. Gil Aronson and he practices in both Hollywood and Weston. If you are going to be in downtown Ft. Lauderdale, than Hollywood is closer.

One of the other things I've learned down here is that there is a much bigger push to just schedule a c-section than there was in the DC area. VBAC is almost unheard of here (read above about the lawsuits) and with the major demand on the obgyns, they are very quick to do scheduling of induction or c-section. Dr. Aronson won't do that, he is in favor of letting nature take its course and of VBAC.

My hospital was Memorial West, it was okay, better than most. Dr. Aronson also delivers at Memorial Regional, an older hospital, but has a nicu unit. Ask him where else. I've heard bad things about Broward General and great things about Holy Cross. One of my friends changed doctors so that she could return to Holy Cross for her 2nd.

If you want to get in touch and ask anything, feel free, my email is ____@____.com. I work near Las Olas and 3rd Avenue.

Happy Moving! C.

Hi there new mom to be:
I recommend my former doctor (I switched insurance company, she does not take Vista). The group is Premier Obstetrics & Gynecology Assoc. Her name is Joanne Richards, her partner is Dr. Fernadez (also a woman). Dr. Fernandez delivered my first baby (now 4), while Dr Richards was on vacation, she was wonderful. Dr. Richards delivered my twins by c-section 2 years ago. Both very professional, always take the time for your questions. I'm not having any more babies, but if I still had Aetna, she would still be my Gyn. They work out of both Memorial Regional & Memorial West Hospitals. Hopfully, is not too far for you.
Their phone: ###-###-####, in Hollywood & Pembroke Pines.
I can also recommed my children's Pediatrician, Dr. Lisa Gwynn, fron Choldren's Medical Center, also out of Hollywood & Pembroke Pines. They also work weekends & holidays for emergencies, there is always someone on call. Their phone: ###-###-####
I highly recommend them both, Good Luck and congratulations on your first baby.
Signed, Crazy mother of 3.

My OB is in Ft. Lauderdale on Commercial and Federal. Her name is Dr. Ghea Adeboyjeo (pronounced: ad-a-boy-geo). She is really great and the nurses are nice too. To be honest though I didn't think Holy Cross (who she is affiliated with) was the best experience for having my baby. Compared to other hospitals that my friends have had their babies at, I feel like they weren't that caring with me.

T., Las Olas is a great place to live. I work in the downtown Ft. Lauderdale area and enjoy Las Olas Blvd tremendously.

I recommend my OB/Gyn, Dr. Sam. Her office is located on East Commercial Blvd and you will love the care and customer service her office attendants provide. Her number is ###-###-#### and the address is 2466 E. Commerical Blvd. Araba Sam is her name and you can check out her web site at www.eliteobgyn.com . In addition, I am a certified Doula should you be interested in hiring one. My contact number is ###-###-####. Hope to hear from you and welcome to South Florida! It's a beautiful place to live.

I second that response for Patricia Calvo! She is great! We moved to South Florida last summer when I was 10 weeks pregnant, so I too, needed to find an OB right away. Dr Calvo had big shoes to fill b/c I LOVED my OB up north, and she was just as amazing! She spent plenty of time w/ me at appointments and didn't mind at all that my then 2 1/2 year old daughter was always with me. She kept her included in everything we did, which I appreciated! And during labor and delivery, she was calm, kept me calm and helped me have a peaceful experience. Everyone in the office is great, and Holy Cross Hospital was equally wonderful. Best of luck and happiness with your pregnancy and delivery! :0)
