I took my daughter to Talamantez Karate which was totally awesome but sooo expensive. Almost $200 a month. They had great instruction, but I could not bring myself to pay that much. Can I get some ideas from you for wonderful instruction just not at $200 month. Thank you...... I appreciate it.

House of Payne and Karate studio on the NE side is very inexpensive less than $100 per month for twice a week practice.

We had a luke-warm experience at AMA...my son went for two years and I recently pulled him. Some of the instructors are VERY young (15-17) and I found some of their strategies a bit cruel (like teasing, and bullying). Granted, my son is an extra sensitive kid, but you would think that the teachers would be responsive to individual needs/learning styles. Some of the older instuctors ARE wonderful, but they rotate class to class, and day to day so even when I tried to bring him in on a specific day for that instructor, it was hit or miss. They have lost some of the great instructors in the past year..I don't know why... but it really makes me wonder... Hope this helps... Oh, and don't sign a contract anywhere you go...I would rather pay the higher monthly/cash rate for a few months than get stuck with a year or 6 months of payments and hate the place...

Try this website. My son goes to AKA (American Karate Association but this is one like it. It is affordable and the courses are about 11-12 weeks long. Good luck!

My son has been going to the Academy for the Martial Arts (AMA) for almost a year now. They are great! It's about $100/month, but if you pay in advance it's quite a bit less. We used our tax return last March and paid $960 for a whole year of instruction (that's $80/month). Also the kids can go to class 6 days a week or 1 day week and it costs the same. It's very flexible. It makes it possible for you to pick the class days and times that work for you that week and if it's different the next week that's okay. Their web site is sakarate.com. They give coupons to their students to hand out to new students. The coupon gives you 1-2 weeks of free instruction and a free uniform. If you're interested let me know and I'll give you a coupon. Good luck!

We go to the Bushi Ban in Pearland - it is 129/mo - my 6 yr has done really well there and we have been there about 2 years. Mr. Wes and Sensei Barley are terrific with the kids (as are all the other mentors) good luck in your search!

Hi S....
I'd recommend SA Kids Karate, it is on Babcock & Callaghan... They are great there, my daughter went there for 3 years before I took her out... however, she wants to return, so may put her back... I believe they charge $95 for the month and it is 2x a week.

Hi S.,

We are not a karate academy, but a jiu-jitsu academy. So, there is no kicking and punching, however our instructors do teach kickboxing as a supplement to jiu-jitu. Jiu-Jitsu is a martial art that is great for the smaller individual who has to defend themself a bigger individual. We are located in Pearland near 288. Our facility will be opening on January 26th. You can contact us at ###-###-####. We have 2 formal trainings and 2 practice traiings per week. The monthly fee is $100.

Good luck in your search, these are great opportunities for all kids to stay healthy and learn how to start maintaining an active lifestyle! Plus, when the kids are active, it helps the parents get active too:)

Sensei Doug at Austin Martial Arts Academy in Westlake is completely and utterly amazing. Every time I sit and watch his class I am inspired by how present and focused he is with the kids. I think we pay $100/month but not completely sure about that.

Hello S.,

I have six kids myself and could not afford $200+ a month for karate lessons. I had two children that wanted to take karate and while I was searching I found our local YMCA has karate and the classes are taught by an outside instructor who owns his own studio. The lessons cost $50.00 a month and the kids are loving it!! The uniform was a one fee of $35.00. I hope this helps. Best of luck!!

If there's a YMCA or BOY'S & GIRLS CLUB you can check there. If there's a LIFE CENTER you can check there. That seems a bit expensive to me, too. I know I didn't pay that much for four of us to take TKD (tae kwon do) I believe it's more like $60 now for one person but I'm also going to have to drive the 20 miles to town to do it.

if you're in a metro area, or even a larger town, there will be more than one option. check the web for determining a good school, because you don't want someone who promotes winning about learning. the reasons you're doing martial arts are important. Tis a wonderful exercise, teaches self-discipline and self-control, teaches how to focus, reduces stress, improves self confidence, and that's just a few. Good luck.

Try American Society of Karate (www.askkarate.com) in the HOuston area or Hill Country Karate in the San Antonio/Austin area (there's a link on the ASK site). ASK is the cheapest I've seen - only $40 per 3 month session. Uniform is $35 (can ____@____.com for even less!). Tournament & Belt test are optional and $35 each. My daughter really enjoys it & got me to sign up for the adult class so now I enjoy it too - great exercise! We both really like the instructors - friendly and not mean or pushy at all. For cheap at home fun, get used sparring gear @ eBay, thrift shops & garage sales for dirt cheap! Also books & videos from the local library or through the interlibrary loan. Good luck!

I also was amazed how expensive Karate was when my son started. I do not know where you live but there are a few around that are 45-60$ a month. My boys go to SORYU Karate in Priem lane which is also Gattis and 130. Take 130 to gattis and if your coming from the south you make a uturn to priem lane there is a funeral home there and turn right. Go about 1/2 a mile and there is a small warehouse on the left. He charges 45$ a month for the first 3 months and talk to him (Mike Hill) about the final price per month. I have never seen anyone pay more than 60 a month. and he gives a discount for the second sibling. CHeck out his website google Soryu Karate Mike Hill.
He is a great teacher!!!

Not sure what side of town you were looking for, but my son attends Golden Dragon Karate Studio off of Castroville Rd. (west side of town). The instructor is great and it only runs me about $60/month. It's $5 per class and they have three classes per week (2 during the week and a Saturday class). The participate in several karate tournaments throughout the year and in December they have their awards banquet. It's very nice and everyone is so friendly.

I second the recommendation for Austin Martial Arts Academy on Bee caves Road. Their focus is on self-control and learning to cope with situations without conflict vs. competition and strength. Their dojo is zen-like and the instruction is, bar-none, the most amazing I have ever witnessed. My son has taken Hopkido, Tae Kwan Do and other Karate classes before we moved to Austin and got a little bit out of each class but nothing much. AMAA has done wonders for him both mentally and physically and they are not that expensive compared to other places I checked out.
