My family of 3 (almost 3 year old boy) relocated to Troy area from Houston, Texas in the middle of July 2009. We love the area and we are very excited on buying a house here however we have first to go through our first winter. We did not received our stuff from Texas yet (it is a military move, and sometime it takes a long time for your household things to get to your new location) so we are looking to find consigment or thrift stores to buy some of the things we need now but we will not need after our furniture and clothes will arive. We are also looking at our first winter here (Texas is not known for its cold winters!!!!!!!!!) and we need warm clothes. I have an idea about what kind of clothes we need, however
I do not seem to be abLE to find stores with good prices. Maybe some of the momswho are living in this area can give me some directions. I would really appreciate it!
Thanks

What can I do next?

Mom2Mom sales and salvation army store have cheep prices but if you want brand new, head to Great Lakes Crossing! Hit the Children's Place Outlet, The Old Navy Oulet and the Baby Gap outlet. If you look a little bit, you'll get brand new stuff at great prices. Great Lakes it off of I-75 and about 15 minutes north of Troy exit at big beaver or crooks. Personally, I like buying stuff for my boys that haven't been worn by anyone else.

I also recommend Salvation Army, children's resale shops, (one that hasn't been mentioned is The Funky Frog, Children's Resale Shop in downtown Rochester), mom2moms sales (for a complete list of sales in the area this fall go to www.mom2momlist.com), craigslist and freecycle.

Try a site called GumdropSwap (http://gumdropswap.com). You can swap from anywhere in the US by sending the clothes your kids outgrow to this kids boutique in CT. An option if you want to get some value out of all the money you spent instead of flat out donating. As long your things are in good condition they don't turn down anything because of brand, size or season. They take everything unlike resale store like Once Upon a Child! They give you points to shop on the website and send the clothes that fit your kids. It's great if you don't have time, patience or know how to do consignment, Ebay, craigslist, tag sale, etc.

This is also a children's resale shop located at Hayes/Hall Road called Children's Orchard. I've found lots of great deals there for my children.

The Mom2Mom sales are also great. I prefer to sell the things my children have outgrown at a table because as a seller you get to shop before the doors open. I've found you may only find a couple of tables selling the size and quality that you want but it's well worth it. This is a great way to sell your baby things too i.e. strollers, carseats, high chairs, etc.

Good luck and hang in there!

Check out www.thefunkyfrogonline.com. It's an excellent children's resale shop in Rochester, not far from you. The owner is Renee Perkins and she's a Mamasource mom. I'm sure she'll be happy to help you outfit your little boy for the upcoming Michigan winter without spending a bundle.

Welcome to Michigan and enjoy the soon-to-come snow! L.

We really love JcPenney's for our clothes. They always have great sales and I rarely pay over $25 for awesome jeans for my kids! Kohl's is also pretty good(I think their jeans are priced high in comparison, though)and Old Navy. Welcome to Michigan!! Hope you enjoy your first winter here:)

Marshalls is a good place to look. They receive different things all the time, so you really need to go often. I just bought my 3 year old some great sweaters for a great price.

For your son's clothes I would try Great Lakes Crossing (Auburn Hills) - they have outlet stores and I just saw t-shirts and things for little boys for $1.99.

For your son, I would go to Mom 2 Mom sales. They are held in different areas on Saturday mornings. It is like a garage sale with all kid stuff. Just google "mom2mom" and their website will populate.

For you and your husband, there are thrift store and consignment shops everywhere. There is a big Salvation Army store in downtown Royal Oak and another in Orchard Lake/Commerce (Orchard Lake rd just west of Cass Lake rd). There is also a consignment shop just past the Salvation Army on Orchard Lake rd (not a very big one, but some nicer stuff)

I would also try Craigslist.org or ebay. . .

Good luck and enjoy the snow!

I buy everything resale. There is a "Once Upon a Child" at Rochester Rd. and Square Lake Rd. Another store is "Restyle Child" on Cole off of Eton in Birmingham. You can also check out mom to mom sales at:
http://mom2momlist.com/ . Click on Summer/Fall list. There's are also Salvation Army stores. I've shopped at a couple. There's one in Royal Oak. There's another one on Orchard Lake Road in Keego Harbor. I've heard there's one on South Blvd, but I've never been there.

Mom 2 Mom sales are always a good place to start looking for clothes. There are also a lot of garage sales. There is an huge indoor garage sale this Saturday, September 26th, at the Oakland Mall Event Center, formerly known as the Circuit City building, north of Macy's from 9 to 4 and there may be some items available there.

Welcome to Michigan!

If you go to mom2momlist.com it wil list mom to mom sales in the area. You can find some great deals there. Also in Great Lakes Crossing mall there is a Children's Place outlet and Carter's outlet that you can find some great deals in, although sometimes they work better for planning ahead for future seasons. Once Upon a Child is a consignment shop that can be good, but I am not sure where all of there locations are. I have only gone to the one in Canton.

Good luck!

Hi F.,

Welcome to MI! For your son, there are these great sales called Mom2mom sales (you can look it up online) and it is where moms come to sell their children's clothes (normally there is a sale every Sat, at schools, churches etc.) Those are great for finding inexpensive clothes for your son. For you, maybe just go to Kohl's b/c you can find such ridiculous good sales there. Thrift stores, hmm.. Not sure about those. Maybe you want to check out craigslist for some stuff. We recently sold some nice furniture for not that much on there (since we moved and it didn't fit our new house). Hope that helps a bit.

Also, I noticed your byline that you were looking for a legitimate work from home opportunity. I used to be a psychotherapist b.c. (before kids- my son is 4 yrs old and my daughter is 2 1/2 yrs old today). I have my own business with a company called Arbonne International. Have you heard of it? It's a wonderful 29 yr old Swiss Health and Wellness Company. They have fantastic products, I have been using them on my very sensitive skin for years (just before grad school). They are all natural, vegan, no perfume, mineral oil, no waxes/dyes etc.. If you are interested, you can always email me and I can give you my website to look at. Or, I can put something in the mail for you. It definitely is worth taking a look at. Since we live in Bloomfield HIlls, we are very close. You will enjoy Troy, I grew up there, lots of fun things to do! Have a great weekend. Take care. *C.

once upon a child located on rochester road in troy. kids go round in sterling heights.. both are good kid resale stores.

the salvation army in rochester is good.

It took me a while to figure this out.. a child needs 3 coats in michigan... a lightcoat.. (either a windbreaker or a fleece jacket- doesnt have to have ahood) , a midweight jacket.. fleece inside and a windproof layer with a hood, and a thick winter coat. If you have those 3 coats you will be all set for whatever.. you also need 2 or preferable 3 pair of mittens. lighter ones for just in and out of the car and heavier ones for playing in the snow.

It usually doesnt snow until after christmas... the third week in january is usually the coldest week.. at our house once we are past the third week in january.. we think spring is coming. Ok that is a bit optimisitc..
If your son is not in school.. make sure that you and your son get out of the house almost every day in the winter.. or you will all get a bit crazy.. unless it is a real blizzard.. we go somewhere..

I know all the freee and cheap kids entertainmment places especailly for winter days..
