Hi! I'm new to the Milwaukee area (Whitefish Bay), just found out I am pregnant (yay!), and am looking for a OB GYN as well as a great birthing hospital. I'd like a woman doctor, someone friendly, warm, experienced, professional and accessible. Anyone have any recommendations?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks everyone, for all your great help and recommendations. Several of the docs you mentioned are covered under my health plan, so I'm going to check them out! It was also very helpful to get a sense of which hospitals to consider: I've now visited The Birth Spot at Columbia (very nice!) and have tours set up next week at Aurora Women's Pavilion and St. Joe's Family Birth Center as well. So I feel like I'm well on my way. (Plus in the meantime I've had it confirmed, the birth day is set for May 27! ) Glad to have found this group!

My OB/GYN is fabulous. Her name is Dr. Rebecca Lawrence. She's at Mayfair Mall in the professional building in the offices at the top of the mall. ###-###-####. She takes LOTS of time with you, never rushes in or out. I also love the on-call schedule. Sun-Thur she on for her patients after hours. Fri-Sat they rotate weekends. She delivers at St. Joseph's hospital which is "the" baby hospital in Milwaukee. The neighborhood leaves much to be desired but the security is A+ inside the building and particularily on the baby floors. I know you mentioned you'd like a women but a GREAT man dr. is Dr. Brian Bear ###-###-####. Here is a link to a list of top dr's in 2004. I personally had a WONDERFUL experience with the midwives at Associated OB/GYN inside the Women's Pavillion at West Allis Memorial. Beth, the midwife that delivered both my boys is no longer with them :( but the other midwife, Sherry is great too as well as ALL of the OB's and nurses there. And talk about an awesome place to have a baby!! If you're gonna be in for the "ride" of your life, you might as well be at the "country club" of hospitals. Whirlpools, dimmed lighting, HUGE rooms...and a NICU down the hall. And most of the postpartum rooms can come with a queen bed for you and the hubby to stay in together! We had both BCBS and UHC insurance and they were both accepted and in network for this office and hospital. Good luck and enjoy...it really goes by fast!

PS If I had to choose ONE of the OB's it would be Dr. Schauffelburger (sp???) SHE'S AWESOME! Younger, professional, great communicator AND a mommy to little ones too!

just a quick clarification on a previous post-- you can use the whirlpools at AWP in labor as a comfort measure IF you can find a doctor who supports them. you can NOT have a waterbirth there. the only way to have a waterbirth in the area is to have a homebirth with one of the many homebirth midwives or a birth at the private birth center in menomonee falls with a homebirth midwife.
i teach at AWP, work there frequently as a Doula and also had my last baby there with Cheri Jaeger, CNM. they are set up for wonderful hydrotherapy, but the VAST majority of women are never able to use it because of doctor's preference or interventions that keep them on continuous monitoring (i.e.-pitocin/pain meds/doctor's routine). awp does not have telemetry available.
Associated OB/GYN does support the use of hydrotherapy. Dr. Baer's (mentioned in another post) group does not allow patients in the tub. ~~W.

Dr. Jones-Nosacek at St.Mary's hospital on Lake Dr is great. But I had a great male Doctor deliver my baby in 2000 at Sinai Samaritan on 12th street by Marquette. His name is Dr. Daniel Gilman. I loved him. Sinai hospital wasn't so great though. Anyway, he was my Doctor for 10 years before my job switched my insurance benefits.:(

Hi E.!
Congrats on your pregnancy. When are you due?

I'm J. and also pregnant and living in Whitefish Bay! I am 39 (yes, a bit late in life and I have 2 daughters, 11 and 15!) We are due March 4 and just found out we're having a little girl.

I have a great doctor. Her name is Kirsten O'Quinn. Her office is at the Glendale Clinic for Columbia St. Mary's. The Glendale clinic is at 6900 North Port Washington Road right across from the new Pick N Save. I like her a lot because she is young and up with the times yet very knowledgable. She also just had a baby about a year ago so she can appreciate what we are going through. You can reach the clinic at ###-###-####.

I'm having our baby at St. Mary's hospital on Lake Drive. They have a NICU there just in case we need it (hopefully not).

It seems you and I have a lot in common. I am also a writer. I work full time as a communications/PR specialist where I do a lot of writing, but I also write fiction, poetry and some nonfiction in my spare time. We should talk sometime.

If you want to chat more about our pregnancies, Whitefish Bay or whatever, you can reach me at ____@____.com

Good luck! :)

Hi,
I personally had a wonderful experience at the Women's Pavillion at West Allis Hospital when I had my daughter 9 months ago. There are many different OB GYNs to chose from there and everyone is so helpful and friendly. My doctor was Dr. Dominique Gariti, but I met many of the other doctors in that office too and they were all very nice. Dr. Gariti is younger and very nice and was very helpful with all the questions I had. Also, as someone else responded, the facilities there are amazing; you can give birth in a whirlpool if you want to, and everything is so comfortable and calming; it's like a really nice hotel for labor:) Hope that helps!
