Seeking Good Dermatologist for Teen Daughter

Hi Mamas!
My fourteen year old daughter has been battling with acne for the last two years. It cleared up for a while. Then she broke out again and started using foundation--and it becomes a vicious circle--she breaks out more, she uses more makeup. I've tried reasoning with her--and tried having her clean her face BEFORE she plays sports--but she's so embarrassed that she won't. I've tried Pro-Aciv and the one like it and Aveeno etc. I think it's time for a real dermatologist's help. We are in the south end of Chandler. I'm not opposed to driving however. Please--all referrals for a really good dermatologist are welcome and appreciated.
Thanks!
K.

I know this will sound weird, but someone recommended dabbing Phillip's Milk of Magnesia on my son's acne before bedtime. Amazingly it helped clear up some of my son's most stubborn pimples on his face. Works for him and saved me a lot of money on prescriptions. Phillip's M.O.M costs less than $5.00 at Walgreens. Good luck.

Hi K.,

Acne is frustrating, unfortunately, some acne medications, like Accutane have harmful side effects. If you're interested in a safer, more holistic approach to treating acne, you may want to consider a naturopathic doctor. For a listing of local naturopaths, check out www.aznma.org or go to www.lifesculpting.biz.

Dr. English's office is awesome. Everyone that I saw there was great! Sarah Neumann was great and got rid of all my achne years ago before my wedding. She was younger and your daughter might really relate to her. They are located in Ahwatukee and Gilbert. Good luck! -A.

I've had okay luck with the AZ skin and cancer center on dobson and Frye. AZ is number 1 for skin cancer though so they are really busy with cancer patients. APPTs are usually 3-4 weeks out.
I would highly recommend "all about you" med spa. They have 2 doctors who own and operate it. and they will sit down with you (no copay) and talk about an hour of what causes acne, what you can do (avoid milk maybe) prescribe meds, or ask if you want to use any other alternative therapies. I use their blue light which kills the P acnes bacteria, It is $40 for 20 minutes.
Another spa Solaris charges only $25 for 18 minutes in Chandler so you can use them for a better price.
Good Luck

I just saw a DR. Nowak. She is just off the 202 and Dobson. I thought she was very knowledgeable. I went in for some moles but she was great. Keep in mind that it might not be covered by your insurance. What I want done was not. However I did take my son to his ped. and they were able to give him a prescription for some meds ( nothing strong) both topicals...so long as he uses them they work. I also had acne after age 30...what I changed was to mineral cover up....its amazing. Ulta carries their own brand and its a great price. My 14 year old daughter uses it also.

My son was also a user of the Pro-active product for skin out breaks. The other problem I noticed with this product was that all my dark colored towels were ruined --the product
took the color out of the towels. I became frustrated and
angry. Finally I spoke with the person who had done facials for me for many years and she suggested a facial for my son.
She asked what he was using on his skin and I told her
Pro-active and also about the towels. Her reply was if it is
taking the color out of the towels, what is it doing to his skin? I made an appointment for a facial and she went over
skin care routines to be done @ home and recommended good
quality products. My son implemented a good skin care routine @ home and with in 4-6 weeks his skin was clear. We did not need to use a dermatologist and prescription meds. I feel
this is a good alternative and then you could see a doctor
if necessary.

My dermatologist is wonderful and does excellent work! Dr. Lines is located at Gilbert and Baseline. I know it would be a drive for you, but he's definitely worth it. He also has a fun side to his practice. He writes comics to teach kids about avoiding sun damage and proper skin care, and he really relates well to kids and teens, especially since he has four kids of his own.

My husband has psoriasis and sees a dermatologist who recently relocated to Gilbert and Baseline - it is called Allure. He really likes the doctor.

I have a suggestion though, your family physician can prescribe Acutane (a least they could 15 years ago) - I took it for about 6 months when I was in high school. It can have some side-effects like dry skin and lips, and a rash on your arms, and of course there are the really bad things like all medications like rare cases of liver damage and you absolutely can't have unprotected sex because the baby would be severly deformed. Wow - that made it sound like a really bad option but it is really a miracle worker for acne.

If your daughter is cautious and responsible you could look into it. She would have monthly blood tests and be required to be on birth control though so I don't know how you feel about a 14-year old and birth control...

**just had a rush of relief that my son is only a baby - and not a girl LOL**

There are lots of other options of course!!! The doctor is named Sam Smith.

Good luck!
