My husband and I are expecting our first baby and I was wondering if anyone out there could refer me to a good book that will prepare him for fatherhood. Would like something with humor, wit, and some bluntness.

Hi E.,

My husband loved "Pregnancy Sucks, For Men" by Kimes & Kimes. It was funny and blunt. It deals with pregnancy and the first couple of weeks after the birth of the baby. My husband would read a chapter and look at me, laugh, and tell me that the book got it right. Also look at the "For Dummies" book series. Those have a lot of great tips and can be pretty funny too.

Welcome to Parenthood!!! Congratulations!

P.S. Try Ginger Ale and Preggo Pops for the morning sickness. The Preggo Pops come in little candies you can take anywhere and they really helped me!

My husband loved the book Be Prepared A Practical Handbook for New Dads. It read more like a "how-to" book than a pregnancy prep book. It's very funny!!!

Congratulations on your pregnancy! There is absolutely no book or any other outside influence that can prepare anyone for such a daunting adventure! My advice to you, is to get out of the house regularly so that daddy can have some time alone with baby. Not only will they form a bond (as you and baby will) but daddy will figure out how to soothe and care for baby is ways that you never thought of. He will appreciate the demands of a baby and be more helpful when he is forced to be on his own for a while. So, after baby is born, sign up for a yoga class, take a class at the local college or something equally as scheduled and paid for. If you sign up for something, you will be less likely to blow it off if the baby has a runny nose and "needs you". Enjoy your pregnancy and try those wristbands that are used to calm motion sickness - it may help!

Congratulation Elizabether! There isn't a book that has everything but my husband really loved this book by Armin A. Brott. He has one for the expecting father and one for the toddler years. Great advice, information and humor too. check it out on Amazon.

The New Father: guide for the first year.

Hi E. - congrats! My husband has A Man's Guide to Pregnancy and A Man's Guide to Babies (both by John Zakour). I bought those for him since this is our first baby too. My Mom bought us The Baby Owner's Manual (by Louis and Joe Borgenicht). My husband is about 1/2 way through the Man's Guide to Pregnancy and I'll hear him laugh a little or he'll want to read me a funny little part. I imagine the Man's Guide to Babies will be the same since it's the same author and has the same general feel to the cover. My Mom said she read some of the Baby Owner's Manual at the bookstore before purchasing and thought it was pretty cute/funny. Sorry I don't have more feedback on the books - we're early on in the pregnancy too.

Someone gave us the one called "Be Prepared... A Practical Handbook for New Dads..", the same one that Tamara W. mentioned. It is funny, easy to flip through and actually has some really good tips in it! Lots of pictures too, straight to the point. Perfect for a non-reader (my husband). It's by Gary Greenberg and Jeanine Hayden (I think, it's over on my bookshelf right now, I can't read it from this far away).

We also used to joke about the one by comedian Kevin Nealon, entitled "I know you're pregnant, but what about me?" because that pretty much summed up our relationship during my pregnancy! But I don't think either of us ever read it (as I said, he is a non-reader, and once baby came I had no time to read anything:)

Congratulations on your baby! also Welcome to road of parenthood.
I would suggest, for something pretty close to what it is that your looking for, "So You're Going To Be A Dad" by Peter Downey. I purchased this book for my husband with our first baby and he loved it. Its funny blunt and pretty straightforward. We both love it because it tells you exactly how it is. Also what to expect and what not to expect.
I hope you like it. :)

My husband read this one (link below) and loved it. It sounds like what you're looking for! It's nice and short too, perfect for a man! hehe (well, I know some men read a lot, but my husband is not one of those guys so this was really perfect for him)
Congrats!! :)

Highly recommend this one. My husband wasn't into reading too many books and we both read this one together, fairly religiously and happily because it was light and funny, but also very informative. There is a series, including the first year and the toddler years that are both also good.

A good book for both of you is "Healthy Sleep Habits, Happy Child' it's not really geared to one parent or the other it just helps explain what to expect from the way your child will or will not sleep from the time he or she is born. I LOVE this book!

Hello, I know that the "What to Expect..." books are very good and informative. I also remember "How to Parent" and "How to Father" by F. Dodson. It was so very helpful with our second child. He was (and still is) a very strongwilled person. These books just helped to put everything in perspective.
Good luck with your precious baby.
