Can anyone recommend a general practitioner who is helpful in diagnosing hypothyroid-like symptoms? My current GP is pretty much unwilling to discuss the issue, even though my TSH level has increased and is borderline hypothyroid.

Hi H., You might try Dr. Connie Hernandez N.D. in Mountain View. I was going to her, switched to a Dr. here in Pleasanotn but will probably be going back to her. She did the most extensive tests and followed through on treatment to make sure it was working. There is so much more to Hypothyroid and if it's an autoimmune issue the faster you catch it the better. Let me know if you have any questions.
I have hypothyroid due to autoimmune problems. I was diagnosed with the antibodies for Hashimoto's disease years before I started taking medication. I had to take blood tests every 6 months until it was necessary to start the levothyroxine, which now I have to take forever. I still have blood tests every 6 months to make sure I'm taking the right dosage. Anything that puts you into hyperthyroid is worse than hypothyroid so you need to be monitored carefully. I see Dr. Hopner in Los Gatos and I'm really happy with him and his office.
I would recommend you see an endocrinologist.
I have it, My family doc treats me with Synthoid. 175micro grams. I wonder why your GP wont treat it? I take one pill a day for the rest of my life. It might not of been so bad if i would of cought it sooner. But wants your thyroid dies. thats it! For hypo symptoms are weight gain, for hyper its weight loss. -Good luck .
You need to go to an Endocrinologist who specializes in this type of thing. I had originally gone to one and he got it figured out for me and the dose I should be on. It took getting blood work done on a weekly basis until we got it right, but he got it right. Later once you are on Synthroid (if you get to that point), then your GP can write the prescriptions for it.
Also a tip...if you do have to go on thyroid medicine NEVER let them put you on the generic brand as it doesn't always have the correct dose even if it says for example .125 it could be alittle more or less. This was per my endocrinologist.

You need to be referred to an Endocronologist she isn't willing to speak now because it isn't her speciality,so giving you an accurate diasnoses testing & a prescribed medication she can not do..Call the office & as k for a referral in your insurance provider needs one better check first with them if not then contact a provider in your net work
Have her give you a referral to an endocrinologist.
If she refuses then switch doctors.
I found mine just by Googling general practitioners in my area.
change GP's. Assuming you have insurance, do you have a list of preferred physicians? I've noticed on this site that you usually cant get answers like this since it would take someone from San Jose to read this. If you can pick any doc you want, I would just pick one, get your file from your current doc so you can take it to the new doc, and see if the new one will set you up with the test. Lots of times, in order to save money, the docs wont give us tests that they dont think we need.... maybe just be more assertive to your current doc, and say "Hey, I'm the patient and I feel like I need this test and until you authorize it I am going to be stressed out and you are messing up my quality of life by denying it to me, so unless you can convince me that I do not need this test, lets just do it for MY piece of mind since I am the patient".
