Seeking General Contractor Referrals in the Plano Area

Following a plumbing accident, we need some general home repairs. They include new flooring in the master bath, new carpeting in the master bedroom, drywall and ceiling work in the garage and family room, new laminate flooring, and painting throughout these areas. There are also some other minor things that go along with this - new baseboards, a new window sill, etc.(It was a big leak!) We already have the claim adjusted, but the adjustor left off a few items (the window sill and insulation, to name a couple).

We were initially dealing with the contractor that was recommended by the insurance company on the assumption that would be the most expedient way to get the repairs done and paid for, but he has proven to be very unreliable (not returning calls, not meeting commitments, etc.). We then called a contractor that we received a personal recommendation for from someone who was very pleased with his work and pricing. He visited and was supposed to submit the estimate to us a week ago and has not. He has also not returned our emails. Both contractors have said that this job should only take 10 days to 2 weeks maximum to complete, but it has been almost 2 months since the damages and nothing has been done and it's driving me crazy. With the holidays looming, am afraid it will get even harder to find a crew ready to work, and I really want to have my house back in shape by December if possible. The chaos is beginning to get to the whole family.

What I'm looking for is someone:

- not too far from the Plano area (one contractor came from a distance, could never meet earlier than 9 or 10am and was frequently late)
- experienced at dealing with insurance companies and will know how to submit change orders to the insurance company to add to the original adjustment
- budget-conscious that will not attempt to upsell us on the repairs (although we do plan to include some minor improvements)
- punctual
- who takes commitments seriously
- is licensed and insured
- who does background checks on the crew
- will be able to meet, provide an estimate, and start work fairly soon
- completes project within estimated costs

Is this all too much to ask? Is a complete lack of communication skills just part of the contracting industry?

Thanks in advance for your help. We are looking to begin contacting people tomorrow or Friday.

Hi E.,
Whatever you do, DO NOT use Superior Remodeling. The owner's name is Duane Cook and he is aweful! We are going on over 9 months for a 450 ft. addition and it is still not done and that is with us paying extra. If I were you, I would put in the contract a rider that if they are over by more than some specified amount of time they pay a fine back to you.
Good Luck!
A.

Hi E., this happened to our house in Plano right AFTER the holidays last year. We had to replace flooring, walls, carpet, cabinets too. It was truly a nightmare! We decided to not use insurance for personal reasons (we have it, but decided to not use it). Anyway, we discovered lots of other problems with our house along the way that needed attention. We could not find anyone either....literally was about 4 months before we found someone good.

His name is Lou Feher (business name is Renovations Plus) and the phone number is ###-###-####. He is very, very hands on and is very good. He has been in the industry a long time. He was the one who finally put our house back together.

Good luck! I know how you are feeling right now....it was total of 9 months for us.
