Hello everyone, I am dying to find a fruit and veggie market in my local area. I normally buy fruit and veggies at your normal grocer but I find that it is more pricey than necessary. I would like to know if anyone knows of any local fruit markets close to the Claymont Delaware area. I have tried Produce Junction on several occasions but I am not very satisfied with my purchases and even more I dislike that I can not pick my own fruit. Does anyone know any local produce markets in my area?? Thanks
I live in N Wilmington area and I like Highland Orchards on Foulk Rd near the Brandywine Hundred library.

I can recommend a good fruit and produce market, however, it is in the Newtown Square area. I live in Chadds Ford and feel the same way you do about Produce Junction. Good prices and it appears that the produce "looks" good. However, you must deal with the "produce nazis" and accept what they give you. If you are ever in the area of Newtown Square (rt 252 and rt 3 there is an old market that continues to offer great prices, good product and they have new produce constantly coming in. Its called Gentiles Market and everyone there is familiar with it. They also have great prices on seasonal plants for your garden, however very limited varieties. Good Luck! B. d

It's on the smaller side, but the Produce Stand at the Riverfront Market in Wilmington (Riverfront) has great deals on fresh fruits and veggies. It's about 15 minutes from Claymont.
Take Gov. Prince/North East Boulevard into the city of Wilmington. Follow this road around until it comes to a T at the traffic light at 4th Street. Make Right onto 4th. As you go toward the city center, make a Left onto King (I think, it goes down toward the train station) and make a left at Market to go under the train overpass as if you were leaving the city on 13 south. The market is the first right after going under the train tracks. The food stands in there are awesome also. Phenomenal sushi.
Other than that, I'm not too sure where to get good produce. We hit up trader Joes and the new/remodeled Giant on 202 most of the time.

Have you tried Gentile's? It is on 252, right near the intersection of Route 3 and 252 in Newtown Square. It is owned by the same people as Produce Junction (I have heard), but you can pick your own stuff and and it is cheap! May be a little far for you, but it could be worth the drive.

I know that you could try "Booth's Corner" on the weekends, although you can not usually choose your own and this time of year they are not local I have found the produce to be pretty good.
I am in PA about 15 minutes from you. I go to our local produce store, Wolff's Market or Wolff's Apple House on RT 452 in Lima PA. The prices are a little high, but you can choose your own produce and in the summer they buy from local farms. The have the best corn I have every tasted!
Also you could check out the internet for a CSA ( Community Supported Agriculture) farm. There is one in Aston on the Neuman College Campus. You become a member, pay a fee in advance, this time of year, and then during growing season you go to the farm once a week and pick up your allotted produce. Usually enough for a family of four. It is a great way to get local produce, teach you children where food comes from and support our local farms.

And then not quite as close to you, but they are having a grand opening soon will be Francines Organic in Hockessin, showcasing all fruits and veggies from local growers.

I agree with everything. Gentile's in Newtown Square is awesome but a hike and with the price of gas you have to weigh whether it is worth it. I'm looking forward to Francine's opening as the loss of Thom's has been h*** o* the community. I also go to Avon Grove--right on 41. There are signs for Willow Oaks or something like that--I may have the name wrong. You turn right and it's right there. They have the freshest mushrooms and I've had great overall luck there, esp. corn in the summertime. They are not open on Sundays except during the heart of summer. You can't miss it because there are 2 or 3 signs before you turn and if you get to the Wawa/Boomers you went too far. Good luck.
