Seeking Food Allergy Specialist

Does anyone know of an allergist who specializes in food allergies and anaphalaxis? My daughter has a peanut allergy which has crossed over to include other legumes (beans, peas...) Now it appears she is having other reactions. I would like to find a doctor knowledgeable in food allergies in particular for testing and for questions (many!). The last allergy specialists group we went to for testing obviously treated mostly seasonal allergy patients. They were very busy giving allergy shots, but I was unimpressed with their treatment of her food allergy. I had to tell them several times what to test for and when they called me later to confirm her legume allergy, they had her completely mixed up with someone with a shellfish allergy. If anyone knows of a good allergist, please let me know! I'd be willing to drive about anywhere for a good one. Thanks!

Dr. Suzanne Mack or Dr. Linda Yeatts, both in Denton, both excellent medical doctors and Naturapaths that diagnose and treat food allergies. I was near death having had my entire body become toxic with my immune system attacking my own body. I got no relief from conventional doctors, then I found Dr. Mack. She expertly and quickly diagnosed me with 16 different food allergies...common foods that I ate every day, as well as an overgrowth of Candida Albicans in my colon! She guided me through the allergen detox, then assisted me with pharmacuetical grade supplements and organic/natural foods to rebuild my immune system. It took 3 years to complete this process and get back to being semi-normal. I've been able to add most of the foods back into my diet, slowly and one at a time, except cow dairy which still causes a bad reaction so I continue to use only goat dairy which works fine. I am now under maintenance care via Dr. Yeatts and enjoy a normal life with energy and vitality, somethhing I thought I would never have! Good luck!

My acupuncturist, Dr. Steve Homoky, used to be a petroleum engineer, and then his toddler needed an epi-pen for dairy & wheat allergies. They took him through special treatments called NAET, and he was able to eat a cream cheese danish after 3 months of treatments with no reactions. I'm not saying that your daughter would ever be able to have a PB&J, but these may help her at least not react in a deadly way should she come into contact with that. Call him at ###-###-####, and see what he says. It really works wonders. Good luck!

Go to Dr. Purnima Venkatesh. She is at the Mid Cities Allergy and Asthma Center in Bedford. We live in Lantana and its not exactly a short drive for us, but we took our son there when we thought he was having major allergy issues and potential asthma. We have been going to her for 1 year and she is FANTASTIC! You may need a written/faxed referral from your pediatric office, but its worth it. Their office is even open on Saturdays for appointments! Best of luck you to ... I hope they find out what is going on with your daughter.

I didn't have time to read your other responses, but in case no one mentioned it...Call Dr. Dehart's office (a chiropractor) in Denton. She has a partner in her office who I think is Dr. Polin. He/She specializes in allergies. This doctor cured my son's peanut allergy in 1 or 2 visits. I know that sounds incredible, but it did happen. I'm not sure what kind of dr. he/she is...I can't remember, but he/she specializes in this. My friend went home and spoon fed her son peanut butter 24 hours after the procedure and he is cured. He is also not allergic to their dog anymore. Good luck!

Dr. M. Ann Block: www.blockcenter.com She does a different type of testing and while she will give shots (with no preservatives or other garbage) for allergies, you have the option of the avoidance. You might want to do some reading yourself as well as this is a topic where even doctors are confused. The best book I found was by James Braly: Uncovering hidden food allergies - note he has lots of other good books too. He recommends a specific lab for testing for the food allergies - we used that and found it very helpful as there were things I never would have considered (for both myself and my son).

You really don't need a doctor to figure out the food allergies - also most importantly, many allergists don't consider delayed food allergies - I spent over $600 (that was my 30% copay) to get my older son tested for food allergies and they outright told me that if he had problems with wheat/gluten or dairy the reactions would be overt and immediate. It turns out that my son is gluten intolerant and allergic to dairy. Traditional allergists will certainly acknowledge your daughter's anaphylactic reaction, but it could very well be that she has other food allergies that cause her immune system to constantly be challenged, thus these hyper-reactions. The test I mention above is for IgG (delayed allergy reaction) antibodies to the foods. We removed the identified allergens from my sons diet for quite some time and he is now able to have them, but for folks with allergies, it is highly recommended to follow a rotation of the foods for which you are potentially allergic - i.e., only having them every fourth day. I have alot of food allergies, both immediate, as well as delayed and can manage with this sort of approach, however, there are some foods that I need to avoid altogether. Also, you often need to avoid entire food families - e.g., if you're allergic to bananas, then you also should avoid avocados, etc.

So, if you do go to a recommended doctor, then please ask if they do the IgG testing - if not you'll likely waste your time and money.

Accupuncture, NAET and other alternative treatments can be helpful for food allergies, but they did not work for me. We did accupressure for my son and it did seem to help - in addition he no longer has severe anaphylactic reactions to flying insects. So, it is possible to retrain the immune system, but it takes alot of diligence. I also believe that this helped my son because we have kept him gluten and dairy free - those are the most common (and destructive) allergens/food reactions. You can get tested for gluten and dairy reactions at Enterolab: www.enterolab.com

While the gluten reaction is not really an allergy, it is often the root cause for the immune dysfunction (and leaky gut) that provides a "fertile ground" for food allergies.
