I can't say enough good things about Dr. Stanley Friedell. He and his entire practice are incredibly dedicated to their patients.

My OB, Dr. Abbie Roth, works with Dr. Friedell (that Meredith mentioned) at Northwestern Women's Health. She looked at my birth plan and didn't bat an eye. I was able to do it my way, and she was incredibly supportive.

Hi C. - where are you located?

My OB is in the city (and I now live in Forest Park). I adore her. I actually switched to her four years ago when I was seven months pregnant because I hated my OB. I could not possibly say enough wonderful things about Dr. Hidalgo - I can tell you that I would not have a baby without her ... Period!!

I see her at the Sheridan Rd office but she also has one on Peterson.

are you married to the idea of an ob? i LOVE my midwife (and the rest of the midwives in the practice are fantastic, too). if you're high risk, or wanting to do a v-bac, ignore the rest of this...

she's at northwestern memorial physicians group (nmpg.com) and they work with the doctors so if you need one, there's always an md around. because they have fewer patients than the docs they have more time for each patient, they are so great, had all the answers i needed during my pregnancy and didn't bat an eyelash when, at 7cm, i decided i coudn't go another second w/o an epidural! i was with a friend of mine when her baby was born with another midwife in the practice and she was amazing as well. they stay in the room with you the WHOLE time you're delivering (unless they have another paitent there, but it's not like the docs who likely have a bunch of paitents there at any time and are just checking in on you and leaving you with your l&d nurse for the most part), which is incredible.

i actually don't see my ob (ann starr, also at nmpg, who i liked a lot) for anything anymore, just amy. she does my paps, perscribes my meds, etc.

my midwife (or, the one who delivered my daughter) is amy willets, and sarah (not sure what her last name is, but she's the only sarah) delivered my friend's baby.

good luck!

Where do you live? I live in the city and drive to Oak Park to for my OB. It's only a 15 min. drive for me.
I had several physicians and friends recommend him to me and he is everything they said he would be....kind, gentle, knowledgeable, and dedicated to his patients. He always makes me feel like I am the most important patient he is seeing that day.
Dr. Vasant Archarya, affiliated at Rush Hospital

Have you thought of a midwife? I currently see the midwives at Northwestern Hospital's NMPG Group. They are great! They are compassionate and answer all questions patiently. I used them for my first baby as well and was pleased!

We love the Women's Group of Northwestern (downtown & one location North). All women doctors and nurses! They are great.

Yes but location is an issue. Are you in the city or in a burb? My doc used to be downtown--birthed both of my girls--but now she's out in Downer's Grove at Good Samaritan Hospital. I'm in the city but I still go out there for my annuals because she's the best! Always listens, never rushes you, extremely knowledgeable and has the most soothing voice ever. Sometimes if I'm stressed out and I'm trying to calm myself, it's her voice I hear in my head! Here's her info. Hope this helps: Dr. Virginia Kelly, ###-###-####.

Hi C.! I can't say enough about my OB, Dr. Gregory Chen. He is one of the 4 docs at Progressive Care for Women at 676 N. St. Claire.

When I was pg with my daughter, I had some issues with progesterone. I did some research of my own and he was very open to discussing my findings. Most doctors have that attitude of "I have the MD, not you, so just listen to what I say." Dr. Chen not only listened to our opinions, but allowed us to suggest a course of treatment. Although it was not a course that he necessarily recommended, he said what we proposed could not hurt anything and would definitely make us feel like we'd done all that we could, so he agreed to it. And the treatment worked! If he hadn't have been so supportive of it, I'm honestly not sure if my pregnancy would have survived.

Also, recently we've been having issues with conceiving baby #2. We've met with Chen on a few occasions to discuss this and he has again been nothing but supportive. Although he has no doubts that we will have our 2nd baby within a year, he understands the mental and emotional issues you face when you fail to conceive month after month. So he factors this into his recommendations. He does not simply focus on the biology of it all.

With Dr. Chen, you feel like you have a partner in your pregnancy, and also in your own female reproductive health. I would highly recommend him to anyone in search of a new OB. As a final note, he was fantastic in the delivery room. I can honestly say that he made giving birth a fun experience, if you can believe it! : )

I would also suggest a midwife. I never found an OB/GYN to be as wonderful at listening as it's a different approach to care.

I am very happy with Debi Lesnick and Gaye Kocconis in Evanston, and I was treated great by Evanston Northwestern Hospital when I delivered.

I guess it depends on where you are looking to go. I was at the Women's Practice on Michigan Ave and Chicago just by Prentice Women's Hospital. My OB was Dr. Mia Norlin, but I could heartily recommend all of the Doctor's there (all women), and I had nothing but good experiences with their nurse practitioner's as well. The whole office is wonderful and cheery and I never felt rushed or overlooked. I miss them since my son was born four months ago.

Good Luck

Dr. Jean Walker -- Comprehensive Center for Women's Medicine, downtown -- is FABULOUS. I have recommended everyone I know to her and no one has been disappointed. The only catch is that I think she now only takes PPO coverage. Here's her bio and contact info: http://www.ccwm.com/WalkerBio.htm

Ditto on the Women's Group of Northwestern - they are in the Neiman Marcus building downtown. Except for one of the 8 or 9 doctors, they are all wonderful. VERY competent and excellent bedside manner - great listeners. Kamel, Levin and Levitt are three of the OB's that I would highly recommend in that group. (Their nurse practitioners are great too!) Good luck!

I am not sure where you live, but I was very happy with the practice of Dr. Dillon, Dr. Shaw, and Dr. Ashby in Skokie (with Rush North Shore). I had gestational diabetes and an emergency C-section, so I can absolutely say, I had an experienced and wonderful OB. I felt comfortable with all three doctors, so I would have been happy to have any of them deliver my daughter. Throughout my pregnancy they listened to all of my questions and needs, and at every point had my health and the health of my baby as the top priority. Good luck with your decision!

I loved Dr. Bicalho at Advocate Illinois Masonic. I am quite hgih maintenance and had a lot of fears with my first (and only) pregnancy. She was supportive, encouraging and very thorough. She was the doctor who delivered my ds and was in the room the whole time I was pushing; she also did perineal massage and I had almost no tearing. Phone: ###-###-####.
